“You are so tense, my love.” Helen kneading the knotted muscles on my neck and shoulders with her skilled hands.

I laid my head back against her chest, closing my eyes. “That feels so good, my princess.” Tense didn’t even come close to describing how I felt.

Amaris was on a mission to bring down his rivals. That was a bold move to bring Alpha Axel into the castle, one I didn’t expect from him. I thought he would just go on a rampage and annihilate the whole of the Blood Fang pack. He was known to act first and ask questions later. What changed? Or should I say, who changed him? I smirked bitterly. The pretty little Omega had more influence than she realized.

Now he wants to investigate and hold a fair trial. That didn’t fit well into my plan. But one has to adapt…

“Well, at least we achieved one goal, my lord.” Helen ran her fingers through my hair, massaging my scalp. “Although it is just a temporary solution.” She sighed, “We have to take more drastic measures.”

“Helen, we have to wait. Amaris is now on full alert and keeping Raine basically locked up to ensure her safety.”

find a way to get to her.” Helen smiled coldly. “I’m sure she is dying for some company.”

I grabbed her wrists and pulled her onto my lap. “You have to be careful, love. Our pup’s safety is our first concern. We cannot risk losing this one.” I caressed her growing belly, feeling the small flutter of movement in her womb.

“He’s strong, this one. You worry too much, Sorin. I won’t let anything happen I promise.” She kissed me lightly, cupping my face.

As much as I wanted to take her to our bed and make love to her, I couldn’t risk it. The strange thing lately, I have been having erotic dreams about my brother’s little Omega. F uck, what was it about her? She could make a man lose his mind with that tight body of hers.

That day when I took her to the rampart, I wanted to taste her but that would have been foolish. I wouldn’t hurt Helen like that and besides, Amaris would surely kill me. But that made me wonder… Did she have that effect on every man that she came into contact with?

“Why are you smiling like that, Sorin?” Helen pulled me back from my thoughts. “What are you hatching in that devious mind of yours, my love?”

“Oh, Helen, my princess…So many, many things.” I pecked kisses on her face and neck. “Just wait and see.”

AMARIS

I wanted to stay angry at her, wanted to punish her, but one look into those eyes of hers and it all fell away. She had me under the spell of her mouth, I was a sl ave to her touch, an addict to her body. And it tore me to pieces thinking of anything or anyone taking her from me.

I decided the only way to keep her safe was to keep her with me and when I couldn’t, Ross would be her shadow together with a few guards I trust.

“I don’t mind being with you, Amaris. But do you truly think I would need three bodyguards to follow me around wherever I went?” She sat at her dressing table, combing out her waist length hair until it shone like gold.

“Either that or I keep you locked up in our bedroom. Your choice.” I had no time for arguments. “I can’t risk anything happening to you, Raine. You’re much to valuable to me.” Bad choice of words, I only realized it too late when I saw the color go to her cheeks and her eyes flash yellow.

“I’m a person, not an object.” She didn’t need to raise her voice to show her irritation. Her back went rigid, the slight raise of her chin, she used her body to show me how she felt. How different she was from the first time I saw her.

I sighed and closed my eyes for a second. I wasn’t like Sorin, mincing words, throwing around compliments like they were flowers. I said what I felt and if they didn’t like it, well, not my problem.

But with Raine it was different.

“Of course you are.” I put my hands on her tense shoulders, watching her reflection in the mirror. “You are my heart, the other part of my soul. Don’t you know that?” I felt her relaxing under my hands.

“And

soon you will be carrying our future in your womb. How can I not want to protect you, Raine?”

She got up from the stool. “I’m sorry. You’re right.” She looked down at her feet. “I want to be at your

side too. Will Beta Ross still instruct me in my duties? I want to be useful too, Amaris.”

I took her chin between my fingers to tilt her head back. “Yes, he will help you with your duties, but do not forget your most important duty.” I smiled at her, kissing her lips lightly. “And I hope the most enjoyable one.”

She smiled back. “Of course, how can I forget that.”

I took Raine with me to the throne room where the Elders and advisors waited for me. My spies were sent out to gather information about what really happened with the packs that Axel took in, out of the kindness of his bleeding heart.

If they were surprised to see my queen at my side, they hid it well. Sorin and Helen were there as well.

I led Raine to her throne next to mine and when we were both seated, I nodded and the rest of them took their places.

Elder Mattias came forward to inform me of current issues, none of which interested me much. I stopped him mid-sentence, prattling about the price of grain, the bad rainfall etcetera, etcetera.

“Tell me about the situation in our mines, Elder Mattias.” The mines on the south face of Black Mountain were rich in copper deposits which we used for trade with the other realms, including the humans.

“The mines, your Majesty?” He looked at a loss for words.

“Yes, the mines where I supposedly have captured werewolves to use as sl av es in the mines.” I scrutinized every face before me to gauge their reaction. They were all silent. “None of you? Does no one here know about this?”

I rose from my throne. “Lord Greyson, fetch me the Alpha from the Blood Fang pack.”

“As your Majesty wishes.” He left immediately to do my bidding.

After their pup was safely delivered, I sent him back to the keep. He wasn’t a guest. But his Luna and

pup was well cared for. They were leveraged to keep him under control.

Raine sat silently on her throne, watching everyone. I wondered what her thoughts were.

‘Don’t look so worried. I never ordered such a thing. I spoke to her over our link.

‘I never thought you did.’ she replied, smiling.

Sorin stood and addressed me. “Amaris, these are shocking allegations. But what does Alpha Axel have to do with it? Shouldn’t we go to the mines to investigate for ourselves?”

I smirked at him. “I’ve sent out my spies, Sorin. I cannot be everywhere.” Turning the ring that belonged to my father around my finger I saw his eyes flit to it, a small reminder of who was in charge.

“I could go in your stead.” He so generously offered, and I wondered why he was so eager to get away when his mate needed him here.

“There is no need.”

I was about to tell him he should focus on his pregnant mate when Lord Greyson burst into the throne room, looking distraught and breathing heavily.

“Your majesty! I’m afraid we have a serious problem.” He stopped to catch his breath. All eyes turned to him.

“Well, out with it, old man!” Sorin snapped at him.

Lord Greyson ignored him. “It’s the Alpha. I found him in the holding cell with his throat cut.”
