I didn’t stop running.
“Hurry, Pippa. We don’t know how long he could hold them off. They will come for me.” And for Amaris. I was uncertain whether I would make it to him in time. Running as though hell itself was behind me until my lungs burned and felt as if it would burst.
The castle had never seemed so far away and the road so long. I stumbled over a rock and landed on my hands and knees. I groaned. Exhaustion threatened to overcome me, but I stubbornly refused to give in.
“Raine, we must rest. Just for a while.” Pippa was panting hard. “Catch our breath.”
I forced myself up. “If we stop, the only thing we’ll catch is our death!” Sorin was still out there. There was no time to ponder on what might have happened to Quindin and the dwarves. The Dragon Lords‘ army looked invincible. It was unfathomable that one Magus and a handful of battle. dwarves would conquer them.
But I dared not feel guilty. What mattered now was getting to Amaris. I didn’t know what I would do once I got there. I only knew I had to be by his side. No matter what happened.
Raine, listen. Tasha alerted me to the sound. Letting her advanced hearing through, I stopped to listen.
In the distance, I heard the thundering of many paws hitting the ground.
“What is it?” Pippa asked.
I put my finger to her lips. Yes, it wasn’t my imagination. Wolves. Approaching fast.
“They’re coming for us!‘ Tasha jumped around in my head, elated.
“My pack!” I beamed a smile at her. “Come,” I grabbed her hand and ran eagerly to meet up them.

The warriors who arrived first froze in place, their eyes widening as they took in the scene before them. At first, it seemed like they didn’t recognize me, but then they fell at my feet in submission, whining and showing me their bellies. Behind them, a black SUV came careening down the mountain path. It came to a stop, brakes screeching as it slid over the rocky road, causing a cloud of dust to rise into the air.
The vehicle had scarcely come to a stop when the passenger door crashed open, and Ross bolted from it.
He ran full tilt towards me and, before I could comprehend what was happening: I found myself in

his arms. He spun me around, and I couldn’t help but laugh along with him until he suddenly stopped and planted a fervent kiss on my lips. Shocked at his behavior, he let go of me immediately.
“Raine… Your Majesty, I’m sorry.” He dropped to his knees before me, dropping his head in submission. “I was just so overjoyed to see you.”
I placed a hand on his shoulder. “It’s alright. I was just as happy to see you, Ross.” The kiss was unexpected, but I was without physical contact for so long that I liked it more than I should have.
“Rise.” I demanded. “Take me to my king.” I thought it best to ignore what had happened between us. Ross‘ face was still a deep scarlet when he got to his feet. Hopefully, none of the wolf warriors. would mention his lapse in judgment to anyone. Especially not to Amaris.
“Right away, Your Majesty.” He opened the door, and Pippa and I got inside.
“Welcome home, Your Majesty.” the driver acknowledged my presence with a nod and a smile.
“How fast can you drive this thing?” I asked, leaning a little forward. We couldn’t afford to waste any more time.
The driver chuckled, and I met his twinkling eyes in the rearview mirror. “You’d better grab hold of something, Your Majesty.”
The scent of burned rubber filled the air as the SUV turned sharply, narrowly avoiding the abyss. Pippa’s high–pitched scream rivaled the sound of squealing tires as the vehicle teetered on the brink, righted itself, and sped away over the rocky road.
“Highly strung, isn’t she?” Ross muttered.
“This is Pippa, Ross. She’s my friend.” I patted her hand to calm her down. “How is he?”
Ross looked out of the window without answering. I didn’t press him for anything more. Part of me was afraid to know the extent of his condition.
“Sorin and the Dragon Lord are on their way to end us, Ross.” I told him briefly what happened with Quindin.
“We’ll be ready. He turned around to look at me. “We will fight till our very last breath, Raine. You just focus on Amaris.”
Nothing could prepare me for the sight of my love lying there on the narrow bed in the infirmary. A sob tore from my throat as I pushed everyone out of my way to get to his bedside.
His face had the pallor of death, and the smell of the poison overwhelmed me. I touched his face and his dark eyes fluttered open.
“Raine….” Just one whispered word before he closed his eyes again.

My tears dripped onto his face. I bent down to kiss his pale lips.
“I’m here now, my love.”
The beat of his heart was slow, and every breath labored. I touched the injury and a flicker of pain shot across his face. Black blood seeped out from the bandaged site.
“I don’t know what more to do for him, Raine.” Joanna touched my shoulder briefly.
“I want you to give him my blood.” The words tumbled out of my mouth. Where that thought came from, I don’t know. Perhaps it was desperation that made me say it.
Healer Gwynneth shook her head, shocked that I would even consider the possibility. “You will risk your pregnancy, Your Majesty. I cannot let you do that.” She had a firm grip on my arm. “The king wouldn’t want that.
“I want it! This is what I want! I will not let him die.” Tasha shone through my eyes as I snarled at Gwynneth. “If you don’t do it, I will find someone who will. Joanna? Can you do it?”
Joanna’s and Rhona’s sorrowful expressions made me angry. He wasn’t dead yet. Why would no one help me?!
“The dragons are coming to attack us! Sorin is on his way to take over. Do you want him to rule?” I screamed at them. “We need Amaris!”
Pippa came to embrace my shaking body.
“Raine risked her life to be here.” Pippa said. “Don’t let her sacrifice be for nothing.”
Gwynneth bowed her head. “Alright. I’ll get everything ready.”
She called her assistants to get another bed ready. They pushed the two cots together, and I lay down next to my mate while they got busy attaching IV tubes for the transfer. I held Amaris‘ chilly hand in mine.
“You’ll be fine, you’ll see.” I murmured to him. “Soon I’ll be in your arms again, my love.” I kept on talking to him while the tears streamed down my face.
