RAINE

I fled down the dark corridor, not knowing where to go, but with only one goal in mind to get away from the king. What had I done to make him so angry? The fury on his face…

Hey! Watch it!”

I slammed into a soft body and warm hands grabbed onto my shoulders. When I regained my senses, I recognized the form.

“Oh! Sorry, your Highness.” I panted out, desperately holding onto the sheet around my body.

Princess Helen wiped my wild hair off of my face. “Good heavens, girl! Where are you rushing off to?” I met concerned grey eyes staring down into my own.

Before I could answer the prince appeared behind her. “Your Majesty? Raine? Is something wrong?”

I clutched the sheet tighter, feeling how his eyes raked over my body. Suddenly my brain lost the ability to form words.

“… I… My teeth chattered against each other.

“Did my brother hurt you?” The prince stepped out from behind his mate and took my arm. “Helen, we should take Raine to our suite, get her something hot to drink.”

Thundering footfalls down the passage made me turn my head in time to see a blurry shape rushing towards us.

He stopped up short before colliding into the three of us. Amaris, clothed in a black velvet robe, loosely knotted at the waist. Dark eyes glowed fiercely in his scowling face still streaked with blood. A growl burst from his lips as he noticed his brother’s hand on my arm.

“Brother, have you lost something?” He didn’t remove his hand despite the warning, but his thumb stroked my skin as if trying to calm me.

Amaris narrowed his eyes at his brother. I saw his broad chest rising and falling as he took deep breaths. “Raine! Get back here.” He held out his hand to me, but the prince’s hold on my arm tightened. “Mind your business,

Sorin. Come.”

“Let me take care of Raine, Amaris.” Princess Helen offered, “She seems in need of feminine comfort.”

I glanced back at her, grateful to her for trying to help. But he was having none of it.

“I will take

take care of my own.” Amaris grabbed my wrist and pulled me towards him. I didn’t have the strength to resist. He picked me up and slung me over his shoulder like I was a sack of grain and stomped off down the passage.

He didn’t speak until we reached his room, and he closed the door behind us. Only then did he put me down. I stood rooted to the spot while he leaned back against the door glaring down at me, arms folded across his broad chest. I bowed my head, waiting for whatever punishment I was about to receive. When nothing happened, I dared to speak.

I

“Your Majesty? Did I do something to offend you?” Where was Tasha when I needed her? She was awfully quiet.

A deep frown formed between his dark brows. “I refuse to share you with another wolf. You are mine.”

“Share?” I had no idea what he meant.

Pushing himself off the door he reached for me, one hand went around my neck, scaring me witless. He could so easily snap my neck with a flick of his wrist. But his touch was surprisingly gentle.

He pressed his forehead against mine, bending forward. “Who has your heart, Raine? Because it’s certainly not me.” his voice sounded bitter, harsh. “It is that boy, Luke White, is it not?”

I

Luke? Why would he think that? I looked up into his dark eyes and gently I put my hand over the one encircling. my neck.

“I don’t understand.”

“Don’t lie to me, Raine.” His voice sent icy shivers down my spine as his grip tightened slightly. “You moaned out his name while we were making love.”

I gulped. “What?!”

“Don’t act all innocent!” He shoved me away from him. The movement was unexpected, and I lost my balance, landing on my butt at his feet. He left me lying there and poured himself a goblet of wine from a flask on his

I scrambled to my feet, scooping up the sheet in the process. “Why would I moan out his name?”

“I should ask you that question. He rejected you, didn’t he? Did you accept his rejection?” He gulped the wine. down and slammed the goblet on the desk.

I nodded.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes, your Majesty.”

“Amaris. Call me by my name for f uck’s sake. I am your mate!” He turned on me. “Don’t you feel the mate bond, Raine? What is wrong with you?” his fingers dug into the soft skin of my upper arms.

“Please, you’re hurting me…” Tears welled up in my eyes. But he wasn’t stopping.

“Am I not good enough for you? You would rather be the mate of that…young pup than my queen?” He shook me, roaring into my face.

“Amaris… please, it’s not me. It’s Tasha. She doesn’t accept the bond.” The mark on my shoulder burned like

hellfire.

“Well, we can easily remedy that.” He let go of me and I slumped down onto the loveseat. “A week from now we will have our wedding feast and your coronation.” He looked at me sharply. “And an execution.”

I rubbed my upper arms frowning at him. “Execution?”

“Yes, Luke White’s execution.” His face was now a stoic mask, no emotion, only his eyes glittering, his wolf looking back at me.

“No! No, no, your Majesty – Amaris! You can’t do that!” I jumped up from the loveseat, the sheet pooled at my feet, but I didn’t care. I reached for him.

He tilted his head, one eyebrow lifted as he smirked at me. “So, that’s how it is then. Begging for his life. You are still bonded to him.”

and Tasha was trying to protect us, because we didn’t trust him.

“I understand perfectly, Raine.” He turned away from me, discarding his robe and displaying his perfectly sculpted body. With a sigh he laid down on the bed. “Come lie down with me.”

Hesitantly I went to him. I sat down at his feet. “Please don’t do this, Amaris. Alpha White is a powerful Alpha and one of your most valuable subjects. If you kill his son, he will turn on you. He has many supporters.” I knew this for a fact. Our pack had the richest soil in the kingdom and supplied the kingdom with grain and other food sources. “Please, I will do anything you say. Please don’t kill Luke.”

“You’re bargaining with me?” he snorted out a laugh. “What makes you think you have anything to bargain with, Raine? I own you.”

How co

How could I forget that. I looked down at my hands. “I know. But for the sake of peace.”

Lying back against the pillows, his hands folded under his head, watching me in silence. Then at last he said, “I

want an heir.”

I met his dark, penetrating stare without wavering. “I will give you what you want.” As I said it, my pulse raced like a bird against a window, trying to break free.

“Then come here and spread your legs for me, my queen.” He held out his arms towards me, but there was no

smile on his face.

When I woke with the sunlight streaming onto my face, his place next to me was empty. I sat up groaning, there wasn’t a muscle in my body that didn’t ache. He was not gentle. He took what he wanted countless times but no matter how tired I was, my body responded to his kisses and his touch. I was unsure if I would be able to walk.

There was a soft knock at the door and without waiting for my response it opened and three Omega ser vants

came in.

“The king ordered us to assist you, your Majesty.” One of the girls, a pretty black-haired girl bowed curtly, and the others followed. It didn’t escape me that she called me your Majesty with sarcasm dripping from her tone. I let it go, I didn’t feel like a queen. I felt more like a broken doll.

“There is no need. I can help myself.” I felt self-conscious, gripping the bed covers to cover up. I was too well aware of how stained the sheets were.

Ignoring me she ordered the other two. “Sarah, run a bath and Lily get her clothes ready.” She fixed me with a cold stare. “The king had a whole wardrobe made for you, your Majesty. We need to hurry. He is not a patient man and you have slept rather late.”

It became clear that I needed their help, for as soon as I got up, my knees buckled under me. The girl called Sarah helped me to the bathroom where the remnants of the broken mirror were swept into a corner.

“We’ll clean up the mess after.” She said, helping me into the steaming bath. She smiled apologetically. “You’ll soon feel better. Just relax.”

“Thank you.” I was relieved that she seemed friendlier than the bossy one. The bath was fragrant, filling the room with the sweet, calming scent of lavender and I sunk down into the water.

After bathing I let them help me get dressed in an elegant three-piece cream-colored pantsuit and turquoise. blouse. Low heeled court shoes finished off the outfit and Lily brushed my hair until it shone and left it loose.

“Now just a light makeup and you’re good to go, your Majesty.” She stood back admiring her handiwork. “Doesn’t she look gorgeous, Rona?” she asked the bossy one for approval. The latter just grunted in reply.

“We need to hurry.” Rona looked anxiously at the door. As if she expected it, the door swung breezed in ignoring the girls who bowed their heads so low they all but touched the floor.

“Good. You’re up,” he said. “Let’s go.”
