Chapter 30
Josiah threw several orbs of dark fire at Audrey. Audrey’s eyes widened and she jumped out of the way, just barely making it out of the way as the fire orbs hit different parts of the mini-golf course. She saw Anthony’s car driving away. She realized that Anthony must have found out where Aunica was and Josiah was trying to keep her from following Anthony.
Josiah smiled as he saw Audrey hide from him. His evil heart filled with satisfaction as he saw people fleeing from the destruction. He heard police sirens coming towards him. He turned around and saw the police cars flying around the corner before stopping. The police officers got out and pointed their guns at him. Josiah could tell that they were scared.
“Drop to your knees and put your hands behind your head!” One of the officers shouted.
Audrey looked at the police. She could tell that they were scared. She looked at Josiah. She wondered what the demon would do. She seriously doubted that Josiah would just give up. To her horror, Josiah simply smiled and snapped his fingers. Audrey wanted to cry out a warning to the police officers but several gunshots were heard and the officers fell to the ground dead. Audrey looked around to see who had shot the cops and saw several Black Hands all around, some even were behind her. Their guns were pointed towards the dead cops.
Josiah looked in the direction that Audrey was hiding in. “Give up now Girl.” He told her. It was pointless for Audrey to keep fighting Anthony. “Surrender now and I’ll tell you about her.”
Audrey looked at Josiah from her hiding spot. Who was the her that Josiah was talking about? She wanted to know but she couldn’t help but feel like this was a trap. Before she could do anything, she vanished in a puff of smoke.
Josiah frowned and looked around. Where did the girl disappear to? He turned to his Black Hands. “We don’t have much time left.” He told them. “We have to find the Chosen One before she can stop Anthony from getting Aunica.” His Black Hands ran to their vehicles quickly before driving away. Josiah looked at the mini-golf course. It was time to destroy all traces that the Black Hand had been there.
Audrey looked around as she reappeared. She had no idea where she had appeared. It looked like an old looking chapel. She didn’t recognize the place. There were small wooden pews. She heard someone crying. It sounded like a young girl. She looked in the direction of the crying. There was a girl by the altar. Audrey couldn’t see the girl’s face but she somehow knew that it was Aunica.
Audrey went up to Aunica. “Are you okay?” Audrey asked as she went towards the girl. Aunica turned around quickly and wiped the tears away from her eyes. Audrey could tell that the little girl was scared.
“Who are you?” Aunica asked. She had never seen Audrey before at the camp. She backed away from the other girl. The older girl looked over her shoulder at the entrance before she looked at Aunica.
“I’m a friend.” Audrey told Aunica. She knew that they didn’t have much time left before Anthony showed up. She wasn’t sure where James was but she couldn’t worry about that. She had found Aunica and that’s what was important. She was nearly done with completing her next Trial.
Audrey sat down by the altar. “My name is Audrey. I’ve been looking for you for a couple of days now.” She continued. “It’s important that I take you somewhere that is very safe.” She knew that she probably didn’t make a lot of sense to Aunica but she wasn’t sure how much she should try explaining without Gabriel there. She didn’t entirely trust Gabriel to give Aunica the whole truth but she didn’t know all that much either.
Aunica sat down across from Audrey. She was curious about what Audrey had to say. “Why isn’t this place safe for me?” She asked. “No one’s been hurting me here.”
Audrey frowned. “But when I appeared here, you were crying.” She said to Aunica. “Why was that?”
Aunica wiped her eyes again. “I was supposed to be adopted when I got done with this week of camp but once again the adoption fell through and the couple couldn’t adopt me.” She explained. She was used to it though. It had always been that way for as long as she could remember. Each time she was supposed to be adopted, something happened that ended up with her not getting adopted.
Audrey felt a connection to Aunica. She had also been adopted. “Do you know who your birth parents are?” She asked. She had just found out who her birth parents had been before they had died. Maybe Aunica knew.
Aunica shook her head. “I was found at the door to the orphanage when I was a baby.” She explained to Audrey. “No explanation as to who my parents were or why I was abandoned.” She had looked for her own birth parents for a few years before she had given up.
Audrey looked at her watch. She wasn’t sure how much time was left before Anthony showed up at the camp to take Aunica away and she still had no idea where James was or if he had for sure escaped. “We don’t have much time left.” She told Aunica. “There are dangerous men coming here to take you away for something evil.” She couldn’t explain it all but she knew that she had to give some explanation to Aunica.
That was when they both heard someone approaching them. Audrey quickly stood up and turned to face whoever it was, having Aunica behind her. She wasn’t about to lose Aunica to some sort of accident again. The memory of Aunica disappearing in the time vortex was still fresh in her mind. To her relief, it was James.
James looked over his shoulder. “We don’t have much time.” He told Audrey. “Anthony just showed up. I saw him entering the office building here. He has a lot of Black Hands with him.” He wasn’t sure how Audrey had ended up there but now wasn’t the time to dwell on that. They had to escape before Anthony could get Aunica.
“Who are you and who is Anthony?” Aunica asked. James looked past Audrey and he suddenly found himself at a loss for words as his time with Aunica’s past self came up in his memories. He wasn’t sure what to say.
Audrey cleared her throat. “This is James. He’s a friend of mine who came to help find you.” She explained. She wasn’t sure how to explain who Anthony was without scaring Aunica. She really didn’t want to explain who Josiah was. Luckily it seemed like she wouldn’t have to. “As for Anthony, let’s just say he’s someone you don’t want to meet.” She added.
Outside the chapel, Josiah and his demonic Black Hands had appeared and had the building surrounded. Josiah’s eyes were glowing blood red. He knew that Aunica was inside and it angered him. The chapel was after all considered holy so it would make sense that the ground that it stood on would become holy ground, unlike the rest of the camp. He looked at his demonic Black Hands. “Contact Anthony.” He ordered. “Tell him we’ve found Aunica.”
One of the demonic Black Hands took a step towards the chapel. Once his foot touched the ground, it started sizzling. He yelled in pain and backed up. “It’s holy ground alright.” He said, gritting his teeth and rubbing his sizzling foot. He looked at Josiah. “Are we just going to wait here for Anthony to get the girl?” He asked.
Josiah nodded and glared at the chapel. As long as the child was in the chapel, there was nothing they could do. They were demons after all. They couldn’t touch anything holy. But they could keep Aunica from escaping. “Cast the barrier spell.” Josiah ordered. All of their eyes glowed red and a crimson barrier appeared around the chapel.
Inside the chapel, James and Audrey looked around as the building took a red shade. “What’s going on?” Audrey asked. She had a feeling that it wasn’t good.
“They’ve found us.” James answered. “They know we’re here and they’re making sure we don’t escape.” He went to a window and peeked out. Sure enough, there were several Black Hands all around. Their eyes were all glowing red. “It’s a unholy barrier to keep us trap.” James told Audrey. He looked at Audrey. “I doubt there’s anything we can do at this time.”
Audrey shook her head. She refused to believe that it was hopeless. She was a Witness after all. They were supposed to win this fight to help Emily fulfill her destiny. She looked at James and Aunica. “We’re getting away from here.” She told them. She took their hands. “Anthony isn’t getting us. Not now. Not ever.” She could tell that Aunica was scared but the sooner they got away, the better.
Audrey’s eyes began to glow silver. She focused on being back in Gabriel’s cabin where it was safe for them for the time being. They had to get there. She could sense the barrier around them but she refused to let that stop her from getting them away. Her eyes glowed brighter and she felt the light swallow them all.
Josiah frowned as he saw the flash of light in the chapel. He wasn’t sure what was happening but he was sure that it was bad for them. He sensed Anthony joining them. “The child?” Anthony asked.
Josiah pointed at the chapel. “Last I sensed, she was in there but I can’t sense her anymore.” He answered. He looked at Anthony. “I’m not sure what happened but I think she escaped the barrier spell.”
Anthony, not wanting to lose the one that could secure the visions he had seen, ran to the chapel and opened the door. He went inside and looked around. To his great disappointment and annoyance, there was no sign of Aunica. He growled in frustration before going to the altar. He could sense that Aunica had been there.
“Sir, what are we going to do?” Josiah asked Anthony from outside the chapel.
Anthony knew that they had been seen and that it would be impossible to cover up everything that had been happening. He went outside and looked at Josiah. “Have the Black Hands burn everything to the ground.” He ordered. “I want the entire town destroyed to hide our presence.” It was too late now to pretend that nothing had happened but they could at least slow down the rest of the world from learning the truth.
Josiah was startled to hear that. He had had no problem destroying the golf course to hide the fight that had been there but he hadn’t been prepared to destroy the entire town. That was a lot of ground to cover and destroy. “Are you sure that’s wise Anthony?” He asked. “If there are any survivors, they’ll tell the rest of the world what happened here and everything we wanted to keep secret for now will be exposed.”
Anthony shook his head. “Everything that we want to keep a secret will still be exposed if we don’t burn down everything to hide who and what we are.” He told Josiah. He didn’t want to give up the future he had seen. Anthony looked around. “Destroy the town.” He ordered the demonic Black Hands. “I’ll be returning to Ohio. Once the town is destroyed, report back to me.”
Anthony went to his car and got into the back seat. He could hear his Black Hands getting their guns ready. Soon the entire town would be burning to the ground and everyone there who wasn’t a Black Hand would be dead.
