Chapter 50
Maverick's P.O.V.
These past few weeks have been great. I've spent every possible second I could with Kapri. I even made it so that I'm the only one willing to take her home.
I thought that it would take more work to get Brooke to agree with me, but it didn't. She agreed right away. Ever since Kapri told Brooke about us, she's been different. More willing to let me do what I want. Kapri did try to walk home instead of letting me take her a few times. That was fine. I always found her. Sally, already knowing what was going on, also helped. She was like my sidekick with everything.
Although, Sally was all over me more than usual in front of Kapri. I thought she was trying to make Kapri jealous, but it was still very awkward. Kapri's little snarky comments would be a lot cuter if they were directed at me, and not at Sally. It's been stressful, but worth it. Now Kapri knows what goes on when Sally and I are 'alone'. Hopefully, that put her mind at ease a bit.
Over the last couple of weeks, I have been trying to gather the balls to ask Kapri something though.
I never planned to go to homecoming. With or without Sally. The only school dance that I have ever been to was our 8th grade dance. I don't have good memories of that night after what Savannah did to Kapri. Besides, the only girl I ever wanted to see all dressed up was Kapri. She never went to the dances either, so I had no reason. This time it's different.
I don't want to go to homecoming, and I don't plan to ask Kapri to go with me. However, I was planning to take a trip to our cabin upstate. There's a ski lodge near there, not that I plan to use it. I just wanted to get away. From everything.
But I want Kapri to go with me. I had been wanting it since before our conversation. I wasn't going to ask her to come before though. I thought maybe she would want a little space from me. That maybe even Megan and Molly would convince her to go to homecoming. Apparently, Megan and Brooke are not going. They are throwing an after party at Brookes though. Which I want Kapri to be absolutely no part of. So, it's perfect that I asked her to come with me.
Kapri and I all alone, in a scheduled cabin, for an entire weekend. That sounds like heaven to me. We can even get away with it since our parents are married. It's literally perfect.
All I have to do, is convince her to come.
I'm going to take Kapri out to eat somewhere tonight. Somewhere nice, but not too nice so she doesn't feel uncomfortable. I'm going to ask her while we're there. Then tomorrow, I'm going to get us out of school early to head up to the cabin.
I'm going to get a fire going in the fireplace, and make sure that Kapri has all the food she wants. I'll take all of her favorite movies too. We'll spend the whole weekend alone in the cabin doing whatever we want.
I get to pretend we're a real couple.
"What the hell are you so happy about?" Josh asked as he sat down next to me. "You happy that your leech is gone for the day?"
I rolled my eyes at him as I picked at my food. Sally left right before lunch. Something about her dad wanting her somewhere. I didn't pay much attention honestly. "Sally isn't a leech," I muttered.
Josh laughed.
"What else would you call her? Desperate?" He asked.
I glared at him.
"Shut the fu.ck up." I gritted out.
Josh put his hands up defensively, but he had an amused smile on his face.
"Hey, whatever man. I should be thanking the girl. Now that Kapri gets to watch another girl cling to you daily, it's been making talking to her a lot easier." He said.
"What?" I asked dangerously.
Since when have they even been talking?
"Oh you know, at the very end of the day when Kapri goes to the library doing more school work. She seemed really irritated at first that I was always showing up. The more Sally irritates her though, the more willing she is to be nice to me." He said. "Stop seeking her out." I ordered.
"No way in hell. Kapri's amazing." Josh said. "She's funny and sassy. Not to mention how smart she is. Never thought a smart girl would be so interesting. Plus.. she's a great kisser."
I balled my hands into fists.
"She's too good for you. Leave her alone." I seethed.
Josh turned his head to me, and scoffed.
"Face it, Mav. Neither of us is good enough for a girl like Kapri. The only differences between you and I.. For one, I'm not parading around other girls, and two.. I'm going to change into someone good enough for her." He stated. Josh's words shocked me.
"You're going to change for Kapri?" I scoffed. "You? The biggest player in this school? The guy that always tells girls what they want to hear, and leaves them high and dry the next day? Really?" I asked unbelievably.
Josh shrugged. He turned his head, his eyes finding Kapri. I looked at her too. She's laughing about something Megan said.
"I've never seen someone so pretty. Especially when she looks like that," Josh said. "I'm going to ask her to homecoming."
I turned my head back to him. To see him completely serious. Then Josh turned his serious expression to me.
"What?" I asked angrily.
"You heard me. I'm asking her. I'm sure that she'll say yes. With the way that things have been going with you and Sally... Kapri has no reason not to say yes," he said. Other than that you're a terrible kisser.
Josh turned his head back to Kapri. I saw his eyes soften slightly as he watched her. I'm going to fu.cking kill him.
"It's no wonder you wanted to keep everyone away from her. Now you're fu.cking up though Mav. And I'm going to be right here for her when you break her heart," he stated.
I clamped my mouth shut. There's not much I can say back to that. Other than that, I will never let that happen.
The truth is, with how things are right now.. I might really have to hurt Kapri. I might have to break her heart. Because I'll be damned if I put her in a position that jeopardizes her future.
I can't let Josh do that either though. I can't let him have her at all. I won't.
I just have to keep Kapri hooked on me until she leaves for college.
I rushed to the library as soon as the bell rang. Kapri and I had the last class together, but I was sent with another student to help with a few other things across the school. I'm pretty sure that was punishment for not paying attention during class ever. Now I'm running through the school, trying to beat Josh to Kapri.
I can't believe I let this happen. I kept Kapri away from everyone for so long. I guess it was only a matter of time.
The way that Josh spoke about Kapri though.. He barely knows her. Yet, he is already trying to change for her. I saw it in his face. It made me realize that I hadn't seen Josh around with any other girls lately either.
Part of me feels like I should just let Josh win. At this point, he looks like he could care for her better than I can. Unfortunately, I'm too selfish for that.
By the time I made it to the library, Josh was already there. I marched up to the table just as Josh reached up to touch Kapri's face. I smacked his hand away before he could touch her. "Maverick?" Kapri asked.
"Go away." I told Josh.
Josh chuckled.
"No, I need to ask Kapri something," he said.
"The answer is no, so just leave." I said angrily.
"You're not Kapri." Josh said, just as angry.
I'm fuming at this point. He can't ask her. Kapri is coming with me.
""Doesn't matter." I gritted out..
"Why don't we just ask Kapri?" Josh suggested.
I glared at Josh as he turned to Kapri. Kapri looked between the two of us with a raised brow. Josh grabbed her hand, and I smacked his hand away again. "Don't touch her." I said as I snatched up her hand.
Josh gave Kapri a wide-eyed look that said 'is this guy for real?'. Kapri giggled at the look, making Josh smile like an idiot. I'm going to commit murder today. "Kapri, come on. We got to go." I said.
"Wait, I have to ask you something." Josh said.
"I already gave you your answer." I gritted out.
"And I told you that I wanted to ask Kapri." Josh gritted back.
"Okay, enough." Kapri said, standing up.
Josh stood up with her. Kapri gave me a strange look, and then turned to Josh. She crossed her arms over her chest.
"Okay, what is it?" Kapri asked.
Josh looked down at her with a smile.
"I wanted to ask if you'd go to homecoming with me?" He asked her.
I want to wipe that smirk from his face. Kapri better not tell him yes. At this point, I might fu.cking kidnap her if she does.
"Sorry Josh," Kapri said, making me smirk. "Hayden already asked me, and I told him yes."
