Chapter 40
Maverick's P.O.V.
********
I made the right decision, right? Going with Sally. Kapri doesn't care at all, right? No way, she does. This isn't a big deal. It's just Sally. An old friend. An old friend that I slept with once a couple years ago.
Sally was visiting some family in the area. We ran into each other in town. The two of us ended up spending the whole day together, and a very wonderful night.
Honestly, if I wasn't so hung up on Kapri, I might have been able to have an actual relationship with Sally. She always followed me around when we were kids. It was obvious that she had a crush on me.
I tried to tell her once that I didn't like her. That following me around wasn't going to do anything. All she said at the time was 'I know you like Kapri'. Sally was probably the only person that could see my true feelings. At least at that time.
When she came back, I was still hung up on Kapri, but things were different. We were 15, I had other urges. Urges that I tried to use to bury my feelings in. Sally had her own urges, and she knew that my heart still belonged to Kapri.
Sally and I ended up staying up the entire night that night just talking. I've never had a conversation go so easily with anyone. I spent most of that time wishing that she was Kapri, that I could talk to Kapri that easily. I actually felt a little bit bad for doing that, but Sally never made me feel like a bad person.
If things were different, even now, I would have asked Sally out. She's the only other girl I think I would ever take seriously. Right now I can't though. My heart belongs to Kapri. Even if it's one-sided.
I can't give Sally what she wants, or what she deserves.
"Tonight has been a lot of fun, thanks Mav." Sally said, beaming at me.
I gave her a tight smile.
"So, you're back for good?" I asked.
Sally shrugged.
"That's what Daddy says, but you know how he is. The moment someone in town disagrees with him, we'll move again." She said.
Sally's father is a rich man. He has old money, and several different companies throughout the states. The man is very opinionated, and anyone who disagrees with him ends up in a fight.
"Ya know, when I first saw you and Kapri together.. I thought for sure you had finally told her how you felt," Sally said.
"That never happened." I replied.
Sally snorted.
"I was going to say that it sucks that she became your stepsister, but that would be a lie. She's no longer competition for me." She said.
We just pulled into my driveway. It was a really fun night, but.. I haven't stopped thinking about Kapri, and I don't feel any different than I did three years ago.
"Sally," I sighed. "I can't be with you. At all. Not like last time either." I told her.
"Don't tell me you're still in love with your stepsister," Sally teased.
I turned my head to look at her.
"I'm sorry Sally, but I can't be who you want. Or who you deserve, for that matter," I said.
"It's okay Mav. We can just be friends for now," she said.
I smiled at Sally, and got out of her car. She got out too, and threw herself into me. I hugged her back. When Sally pulled away, she planted a small kiss on my lips. "Now that I'm back for good, I hope I can help," she said.
Then Sally got into the driver's seat of her car. I watched slightly stunned as she drove away. I don't even deserve a friend as good as her.
My eyes flickered up to Kapri's window. I didn't expect her to be awake still, or to be watching me. Did she see everything that happened?
I could see the sad look on Kapri's face. Then she disappeared.
Sh.it.
I practically ran up to her bedroom. I twisted the handle, but it was locked. She fu.cking locked me out.
Is Kapri.. hurt by what happened?
"Kapri.." I called out softly.
No answer.
"Kapri let me in," I ordered.
"Go away." She said.
I can hear the crack in her voice. Damnit, I did hurt her. Does that mean she's catching feelings for me?
It wouldn't matter anyway. Kapri is leaving me at the end of the year. I shouldn't let the possibility excite me.
"I'm sorry about what you saw, Kapri.. You were the one that said we could kiss other people," I said.
I heard Kapri scoff on the other side of the door. I smirked. I know what's coming next.
Kapri ripped her door open. Tears are running down her cheeks, but the look she's giving me.. Damn, if looks could kill. I've never seen Kapri that pis.sed off before. "First of all-" She started shouting, but I wasn't giving her the chance.
I snatched her up in my arms, and smashed my lips to hers. Kapri struggled against me for a moment. As soon as my tongue came out to lick her lips, she started kissing me back.
I kicked her door shut, and walked us backwards to her bed. Before I could push her back, Kapri pulled away. She pushed on me, and moved out of my arms.
"You don't get to kiss me after you kissed another girl! You haven't even brushed your teeth! Do you have no decency?!" She shouted.
"Keep your voice down, there are people sleeping." I ordered her.
Kapri clamped her mouth shut, but kept glaring at me. I reached up to cup her cheeks. I swiped her tears away.
"I didn't kiss her-"
"I saw you." She interrupted me.
"She kissed me, and it was just a little peck," I said.
Kapri scoffed.
"And? I'm just supposed to believe that you two didn't do anything this whole time? It's 2 in the morning, Maverick. You two have been gone all night." She said.
"We were walking around town," I told her.
"Right. Maverick Penton hangs out with a pretty girl, and doesn't do anything." She said sarcastically.
"We didn't-"
"Have you slept with her?" Kapri blurted out.
"Not tonight, no. I swear." I told her.
More tears filled Kapri's green eyes.
"You did back then though, right?" She asked.
Back then?
"I knew it when I saw her wearing your hoodie that day. At the time, I just thought 'who hasn't slept with Maverick Penton'. Now.. I'm just another one of those girls. But I've never seen you watch someone as they drive away, or look at them like you wish they would come back. You.. have feelings for Sally, don't you?" She asked.
"You.. knew that Sally was in town back then?" I asked.
Kapri's bottom lip started to tremble.
"She came into the coffee shop I worked at. She mentioned something about looking awful for her 'walk of shame'. I knew what she meant." She said.
Did Sally do that on purpose?
"Kapri-"
"You have feelings for her, don't you?" She asked again.
A few tears fell from Kapri's eyes. I just stared at her with my mouth open. Should I tell her yes, and give her another reason to hate me? Should I tell her no, and risk her feelings for me getting stronger? "I.." I trailed off.
Kapri grabbed my hands, and pulled them from her face. She looked down as more tears fell from her eyes. Then she took a step back, and wiped her eyes. Kapri laughed hollowly as she looked at me again.
"God, I'm a fu.cking mess. I probably look so stupid." She said. "Kapri-"
"I get it now." She interrupted me.
"Get what?" I asked.
"Why you are the way you are. You've been in love with someone for so long. Someone who moved away. You tried to drown out those feelings in other girls. It makes sense now." She said sadly. "We should probably stop this then. The girl you love is back. You can be with her now-"
I grabbed Kapri by her throat, and pulled her to me. Kapri's eyes went wide as she stared up at me. I brought my face close to hers.
"I am not in love with Sally. You are right though. There is only one girl who will ever have my heart. Only one girl I will ever want, but she will never want me back." I seethed. "If things were different, I probably would be with Sally. I can't lie about that. But they aren't. I can't give her what she wants, and she knows that."
I brushed my lips over Kapri's.
"You, however, apparently need to learn your place all over again, nerd," I said lowly.
I pressed my lips to Kapri's softly. Then Kapri pushed herself into me. I was a bit surprised, and stumbled back. When Kapri kept kissing me, I wrapped my arms back around her.
"Kapri," I said as I pulled away.
"I don't want to talk." She said as she kissed me again.
"It's late.. You should go to bed." I told her.
Kapri finally stopped kissing me. She pulled back, but wouldn't look at me. Then she turned her back to me, and walked to her bed.
"Kapri-"
"You should leave then." She interrupted me.
"What?" I asked.
Kapri and I have slept together every night that Brooke isn't here though.
"I said leave." Kapri bit out.
I watched as Kapri crawled under her covers.
"If that's what you want.." I said.
Kapri didn't say anything, so I walked to her door.
"Goodnight Kapri," I said.
Then I trudged to my room, wondering what the hell just happened.
