Tales of Midbar: Secret Priest

Chapter Controversial Mage - part 4

“You must carry a katchey gene and Mum must carry both nibey and katchey genes and even then having two anavim out of three children is pushing the odds. Also Yoldasia is a nibeyah but Miandri is a katcheyah. That’s unlikely if their family wasn’t trying to breed anavim.”

“I think trying to explain all subtle personality differences by two pairs of genes with two alleles each is overly simplistic.”

“Well can we assume it’s true in many cases and you can argue with my biology teacher later.”

“I met Miandri’s father. He was just a regular guy although he was mysteriously unable to get a job. I believe he was very upset about having to be supported by his wife. That suggests he may have upset Benai Nibeyim.”

“The detective who questioned me about what happened the other night said Benai Nibeyim were pressurizing them to solve the case but didn’t want them to investigate me.”

“Yes that is odd?”

“I think that proves Benai Nibeyim have some issue with me.”

“But that makes it sound as if they’re protecting you.”

“Or maybe they’re doing something illegal that has something to do with me. If they’re protecting me, they’re doing a lousy job. I questioned Yoldasia about Benai Nibeyim ...”

“That probably wasn’t a good idea.”

“She clearly hates me and I don’t know why.”

“She blames you for what happened to Miandri.”

“That isn’t fair! Mum took Miandri to a Sorority meeting, Miandri obviously got home before Mum. When I got home, she’d already had sex with Narblo. That’s ...”

“What!”

“They were both up in her room. He was in bed naked and she was just wearing a dressing gown and she told me it was a mistake to give me the impression she was my girlfriend. That’s why I was so urinated!”

“He’s old enough to be her father! Not to mention that he understands your emotional problems!”

“I think they may have done it to upset me but I’m not sure.”

“The trouble with that is somebody used a date rape spell on Miandri, Narblo and myself so you seem to be the only person who remembers. Did you use the date rape spell?”

“No, that happened after I left. Same with the damage to the floor.”

“I’ve no idea why anybody would do that!”

“Anyway, what I was trying to say was that Yoldasia basically said she, or probably more likely, Benai Nibeyim, would never let me get a job.”

“What exactly did you say to her?”

“That if she told me what they wanted, we might be able to come to some arrangement we could both live with. I was trying to be reasonable!”

“That can backfire, depends on the situation.”

“As you said, it’s hard taking legal action against Benai Nibeyim so I thought offering them a peace deal my best hope.”

“You may have a good point but it hasn’t worked. Perhaps you should try another member but ... well, what options do you have?”

“If I do nothing, I’m probably going to have a really miserable life.”

“Or they may get tired of it.”

“Doesn’t sound like a good plan. I have a sort of Benai Nibeyim friend but she’s rather strange and her relationship with the organization is complicated. I might be able to get her to help me. I suppose the best option would be to find a way to get Haprihagfen on my side.”

“Haprihagfen’s a smaller organization, not to mention the fact they’re Winemakers.”

“Who else stands any chance against Benai Nibeyim?”

“Unfortunately, you’ve probably got a point. I’ll do some research and see if I can come up with something better. Maybe Mum can talk some sense into Yoldasia. Don’t do anything drastic in the meantime!”

I considered telling him I was pretty sure Benai Nibeyim had an anavah but I decided that would just worry him and I couldn’t tell him how I could track her down and visit her, wherever she was, and even use time travel to overcome an age difference. It occurred to me I wasn’t entirely sure Benai Nibeyim didn’t have more than one anavot but they didn’t have one Yoldasia was happy about introducing me to.
