Chapter 714 Under Great Pressure
Colten and his wife looked happier.
"Our child is recovering very fast. We couldn't thank you enough for taking care of him, Director Nancy." Colten gave her a bright smile.
"Don't mention it. That's what I should do as a doctor. This is my chosen profession, so I have to fulfill my duty just as you do to yours, right?" As Nancy checked Finn's wound, she threw a glance at Colten o "Oh, by the way, Director Nancy, we found a woman called Leda. She seems to have contacted Nana..." Suddenly, Colten became serious.
What he said made Nancy straighten her back. "What? Leda..." No matter how hard she tried to search in her memory, she couldn't remember this name. "Is she a friend of Nana?"
"I don't know. I'm waiting for Nana to speak. But I have no idea when she will recover. The higher-ups are urging to close the case as soon as possible, so I'm under a lot of pressure now."
"The case hasn't been solved yet. It seems to be a little early to close it. I'll go and see Nana later." It wasn't only Colten who was worried. Nancy was also anxiously waiting for Nana to recover so the truth would finally come out.
"Whether the case will be closed or not depends on its status. But since Nana is in coma, we're not making any progress. If she won't wake up soon, the case will end with David's testimony. Since someone pleaded guilty, it's okay to close the case. If there is any doubt, we can also investigate it. But we have to hurry up, we can't delay it too long, because we have limited hands and there are many cases to be handled."
After all, no matter what kind of case it was, there was no way to prove anything if there was no evidence to support it.
"Okay, let's make Nana recover as soon as possible!" said Nancy.
As soon as she left Finn's ward, she went straight to Nana's.
Some time ago, Nana had lost too much blood. Until now she was still as pale as a ghost, and it seemed like she wouldn't recover any time soon.
Her eyes were closed, as if she was in a deep sleep.
Not wanting to disturb her, Nancy walked out of the room.
Just as she was about to walk away, Erin rushed over. "Director Nancy, Director Brandy asked me to tell you that the operation is about to begin."
Hearing this, Nancy glanced at her watch, and saw that she still had five minutes left to spare. "Okay, I'll just go to my office to prepare. Tell her I'll be there soon."
As usual, she turned off her phone before the surgery. Then she put on sterile clothes, washed her hands and wore sterile gloves and so on.
Everything was all set when she entered the operating room, and Brandy was already there too.
Perhaps it was because she knew that she had saved Charles before that Nancy chose to be polite to her.
"Let's begin, Director Nancy." With a smile, Brandy urged her to come closer.
"Please perform the operation, I will assist you," Nancy said modestly.
Shaking her head, Brandy replied, "I think it's better if you perform the surgery on him. Please do so. I'll assist you." "Oh, I see." Although Nancy wasn't the one who received the patient, she could no longer refuse Brandy's request.
The operation went on smoothly as Nancy hadn't had a hard time implanting a titanium plate, which cost around forty to fifty dollars, under the kid's knees.
It was a success, so Nancy was at ease when she went back to her office to have a little rest.
But right after she poured herself a glass of water, she heard a commotion outside.
"What's going on? Is your hospital specially designed to trap us poor? Don't you know that we don't have money? Why did you use titanium plate without telling me first? We said that a steel plate would do. How come you've used a titanium plate instead? The bill is forty-eight thousand dollars, and for God's sake, we don't have that amount. Change it to steel plate for me!"
For a moment, Nancy was stunned. When she came back to her senses, she immediately put down the glass and walked out to see what was happening.
A man came over aggressively with the bill in his hand.
It was Brandy who received the patient, and it was also her who prepared everything for the operation. Logically speaking, it was impossible that she didn't tell family of the patient which kind of material she would use.
But it turned out that this man had no idea about it!
"There must be some misunderstanding here. Please calm down and speak slowly. Don't worry too much." Since Nancy had already encountered enraged relatives countless of times before, she knew that the best thing she could do was to stay calm.
On the contrary, the man was out of control and was not in the mood to listen to Nancy.
The bill he was holding was almost torn apart. "Look, it's forty-eight thousand dollars. My child only had a minor fracture. Why does his operation costs so much money? Isn't this a scam? People always say that Director Nancy is a good doctor. They say you wouldn't deceive your patients, and that you find ways for the patients to save money. That's why I asked you to do the surgery. But now, tell me, why did the operation cost so much money?"
The man looked at Nancy as if he wanted to kill her.
"Please don't be angry. Director Brandy has prepared the titanium plate. I thought you two have discussed about it, so I didn't verify it anymore and proceeded with the operation. Sir, it cannot be removed. I'll think about what we can do." This was the first time that someone complained about the said reason, so Nancy really did not know how to deal with it.
The only thing she was sure of was that the titanium plate couldn't be taken out anymore.
The risks for having another operation were too high.
It would be more harmful, and Nancy couldn't risk the child's life for the sake of money.
"You are all liars. I can't let this go easily. If you don't give me a solution, I'll file a complaint about this!" the man yelled.
"Calm down. Like what I've said, I need to discuss this with Director Brandy first. There must be some misunderstanding." Something must be wrong if Brandy failed to communicate with the patient's family. "Well, I just looked for Director Brandy, but I didn't find her. They said that you performed the operation. Why should I look for her? I think you just don't want to take responsibility. I'll go and file a complaint." The man was still not convinced with what she had said, so he kept shouting and insisted on filing a complaint. He thought Nancy was just lying.
Therefore, Nancy tried calling Brandy, but she didn't get through her phone.
Just as when she was beginning to panic, Hobart appeared.
"I heard that someone was making trouble. What happened?'1
"Hobart, you came just in time!" This man wasn't listening to Nancy. Now that Hobart was here, she would make it clear to him.
"Don't listen to that woman! Listen to me first. My child just have a simple fracture, but it cost more than forty thousand dollars. What do you think? When did such a simple operation cost that much? That's ridiculous! Are you ripping me off?" This time, it was Hobart who was being attacked by the words of this man.
After hearing what the man said, Hobart turned to Nancy. He just heard that someone was making trouble, but he didn't know what exactly happened. "Nancy, what happened?"
"Here's the thing, Hobart. We performed an operation to a boy who has an injured leg. I used titanium plate for his internal fixation, and now his family is complaining that it's too expensive. You know that the material for the operation can't be reimbursed. Brandy prepared the material. So this matter should be figured out and solved after we ask her." Nancy told the truth.
