Chapter 702 Rescue
Nancy walked towards Charles as soon as she finished bidding Rick farewell. "Charles, I came here to congratulate Rick on his hospital's opening. Is there something wrong? Why are you angry? Didn't it occu to you that my phone may have died? Anyway, I'm leaving. II
After those cold words, Nancy went straight to the elevator.
Before the elevator doors shut completely, Charles boarded the elevator as well.
The elevator was quite spacious, yet it felt tiny to Nancy as soon as Charles entered.
Subconsciously, Nancy inched away from the man.
Recently, Nancy had been better to Charles because of his performance during her mother's illness. But seeing him now made her annoyed.
'Why does he always follow me?'
Nancy felt desperate and suffocated, while Charles remained oblivious to what she felt.
Nancy simply lowered her head, avoiding an eye contact with Charles.
"Nancy, why do you always have to be self-righteous?" Charles could not bear the silence in the elevator.
Nancy could remain silent for three days if she wanted to. The only thing Charles wanted was to talk and resolve their issues.
Charles had always been confident, but somehow he acted differently with regards to his relationship with
Nancy. He often found himself feeling insecure.
He did not want to force his hand, yet he was left with no choice.
He was obviously preoccupied during the whole elevator trip. His mind was filled various thoughts. He wondered whether Nancy would leave him.
Charles knew that his brain made up everything he had thought of, yet he could not control himself.
He agonized as an image of Rick's smug face flashed in his head. If it weren't for Nancy, Charles would have beaten Rick.
Charles didn't want their stalemate to continue. The coldness they shared was not healthy fortheir marriage or their children.
"What did I do wrong this time, huh?" Nancy asked in confusion.
Charles had always accused her of crimes she did not commit. Nancy was growing tired of Charles' mistrust.
'Why is he mad at me? Because I insist on investigating the club? Because of the hug with Rick? Or because I came to Rick's hospital?
Are all these things mistakes in Charles' eyes?
He just wants me to stay at home and be a housewife,' Nancy thought.
She was not the kind of woman that would be a full-time wife. To her, there was more to life than just waiting for her husband and kids to get home. She wanted a career and a life she could call her own; being a full-time wife would defeat those goals.
"So, instead of taking care of your hospitalized mother, you decided to meet Rick," Charles said in a low voice. "Are you proud of your decisions?" "That's it? That's what you've been blabbering about?" Nancy smiled. She had no idea that Charles was gravely concerned for the mother.
Nancy's voice was evidently softer when she said, "Rick has helped me quite a lot. It's only proper that I pay him back. I promise that I feel no romantic feelings for him. And I won't meet him if not necessary." Nancy was also tired of being at odds with Charles after all.
"Really? Do you really mean that?" Charles asked in disbelief.
"Yes. You have to trust me, Charles!" Nancy shrugged as she spoke coyly.
"I trust you, Nancy." Charles really hoped that the tension between him and Nancy had been fully lifted.
"That's good to hear."
Right as Nancy finished talking, the couple reached their floor. The elevator doors swung open and the two made their way out.
Suddenly, Charles' phone rang.
Brandy was on the other end of the line.
Weirdly enough, that woman had been constantly calling Charles lately.
"Brandy, what's up?" Charles spoke much gently towards Brandy than he did with Nancy.
Nancy felt uncomfortable, but she decided to keep her feelings to herself.
"Charles, I called Nancy but couldn't get through. Something happened to her patient. It's Nana. The police are here. I don't know what happened. Come over, please!" Brandy said, sounding completely flustered.
"Nana?" As soon as she heard Brandy's words, Nancy heart became erratic.
"We'll be there right away!" Charles answered and then looked at Nancy. "Do you want me to drive you or you drive by yourself?"
"I'll drive myself. Hurry up! I'll see you there." Nancy was a very capable driver after all. Moreover, if she rode with Charles, she would have to leave her car behind.
"Be careful, okay? Do not panic. Nana should be just fine," Charles said in an effort to comfort Nancy.
Nancy was stunned for a moment and then agreed.
Their relationship was not at its best lately. Charles was more sarcastic than helpful those days.
But some days, Charles could be truly caring, not only to Nancy, but to her ill mother as well.
If only he didn't interfere in her investigation of the club, then maybe there wouldn't be any pent-up resentments. Charles got into his car.
He kept behind Nancy just so he could reassure her safety. Before long, they found themselves at the hospital.
As soon as she parked, Nancy went straight to Nana, not waiting a single second for Charles.
"Director Nancy, Nana is currently in a coma. No one knows what happened," Brandy anxiously reported as she saw Nancy walk out of the elevator.
"Okay, I understand. Where is Nana?" Nancy asked with great concern.
"She is being tended to right now. I don't know if she will survive," Brandy replied helplessly.
"Is it that bad?" Nancy was surprised. Rick's medicine
should have worked just fine. Could there be something wrong with that medicine?
Nancy then looked for the nurse who tended to Nana daily. The nurse said, "I followed every single instruction given to me by Rick, Director Nancy. I did not deviate in the slightest."
"Okay, it's all right." Nancy nodded to the nurse who seemed sincere.
"Director Nancy, about Nana..." Colten had heard Nancy's conversation with the nurse. He had been standing in the vicinity for quite a while.
"Do you think there was foul play involved, Captain Colten?" Nancy asked hesitantly.
"We have nothing but speculations for the time being. But if ever there was foul play involved, it had to be an inside job. After all, the police had been guarding this place 24/7. It would seem that the crooks really want to take Nana's life." Colten shook his head with guilt. 'Tm really sorry."
"What should we do now?" Nancy asked again.
"Don't worry, Director Nancy. We won't stop until we have answers. Did you notice anything suspicious in the club? Someone you know, or..." Colten stopped talking when he saw Charles coming over. "I don't know anyone. I was taken out by Edward. Oh, the other one I know was Nana. I don't know the rest," Nancy said after thinking for a while.
