Sweet Subterfuge by Trina Duo

Chapter 98

Chapter 98
Larissa’s eyes were tightly shut, her breaths equal and steady. She was obviously already in a deep sleep.
Kevan smiled.
Barely a few minutes ago, she’d been the one adamantly insisting that she wasn’t tired at all.
What a liar.
She had promised–she’d said that she would never forget him. All those years ago-
He lifted his right hand after much struggle, the urge to caress her head fiercely rising within him, and yet, his arms halted before
they could approach her.
His fingers curled into a fist.
Forget it. He should just let her sleep peacefully.
The ringing of a phone shattered the rare harmony between the two.
Larissa startled, bolting up immediately.
In her daze, she groggily picked up her phone and was about to stop the alarm when she noticed the string of
unknown numbers on her screen.
She answered the call instinctively.
The anxious voice from the other end was that of the nurse who’d been in charge of Travis‘ care. ‘Ms. Seymour, can you come to
the hospital now?”
Recalling her past experiences, she refused resolutely. “I’m sorry, I’m in the middle of something right now.”
The nurse’s next words shocked her to the bone, a sudden chill snaking down her body. “Travis is dead!”
Something shattered within her.
Larissa froze for a few seconds before asking incredulously. “W–What?”

“Travis passed away about half an hour ago,” the nurse repeated.
“But how?”
She remembered the nurse telling her that Travis was simply paralyzed and that his life wasn’t in any
imminent danger.
His sudden death was very unusual.
The nurse lowered the volume of her voice, but Larissa could still hear her voice trembling as she spoke. “He took his own life–
he jumped off from the window in his room–his parents and brother had left that afternoon, and we didn’t have their contact
numbers, so we could only call you-”
Larissa was shocked. “Isn’t he paralyzed? How could he have jumped?”

“He’s just paralyzed from the waist down. The police inferred that he most probably used his arms to support his body weight
and climbed over to the window. There was also a chair next to the window–they think he used that to climb onto the windowsill
and-
Jumped.
Larissa’s breathing quickened, her vision blurring.
Once, she’d wished for his death when she hated him with everything she had.
Yet, this hatred had been gradually dissipating ever since she knew that he’d been in an accident and was now paralyzed.
Since him and Amber had already gotten the punishments they deserved, she no longer felt the need to harbor any negative
feelings within her.
So, now that Travis was dead, she did not feel happy in the slightest. In fact, a small part of her still grieved for his death.
“What’s the reason behind his death?” Larissa could think of many, but she couldn’t be entirely certain.

“The police are still investigating. It seems like he didn’t leave any kind of note behind,” the nurse replied.
Larissa fell silent.
“Are you really unable to come right now?” the nurse asked again.
Larissa’s grip tightened around her phone. “I’m on Starry Mountain.”
The cable car had already stopped operating at this hour of the night. Even if she had wanted to go, she couldn’t possibly have
been able to.
Besides, Larissa didn’t want to be involved in this affair anymore.
She was certain that if she showed up, the Hardy family would never let her go.
“Okay then.” The nurse was evidently disappointed. “Oh, by the way, the police asked me for your number just now. They might
be in touch with you soon.”
This, she could understand.
A life had been lost, and as the wife of the deceased, she naturally had to be interrogated.
“Alright, thank you so much,” she said, ending the call once and for all.
