Chapter 23: Working Overtime on the First Day
Macy straightens the tie, and then appreciates her masterpiece with deep pleasure. A smile touches the corners of her mouth, "Perfect."
Yusef glances at her, while the coldness in his eyes still does not dissipate. Casually replying a word "Hum", he walks to the hanger near the door, takes his coat and walks out of the room. Stunned, Macy looks at the receding figure of the man leaving directly. Why does he seem a little angry?
Macy hasn't figured it out yet, while the phone in her pocket starts vibrating again. Suddenly it comes to Macy that her mother is still waiting for her in the downstairs hall!
Returning to her office quickly, Macy at once closes the door and then answers the call.
"Mom? Sorry, I couldn't get away from my work just now. Wait a minute please! I will give you the money as long as my boss leaves."
"Macy, I've been waiting for you here for twenty minutes!" Her mother grows restive.
"Ok... Don't move, I will give it to you now."
Macy hangs up the phone, immediately leaves the room, and presses the elevator button.
After getting out of the elevator, Macy hurries to walk towards the rest area of the hall, looking around to make sure that Yusef is not here.
The minute they see each other, her mother gets up to greet her straight away, "Macy, you finally get here!"
With a sign, Macy takes a look at her mother's outstretched hand, "Mom, could you stop playing mahjong in the future? You know the situation of our family now..."
"Of course! If I lose again, I won't play it anymore!" The mother gives her an absolute assurance.
Macy has no choice, so she finally takes the money from her pocket and hands it to her mother, "It's the last time."
Her mother just repeatedly nods in agreement, "Don't worry, Macy! You ought to get back to work now. I'll be on my way."
Gazing after her mother's receding figure, Macy then goes upstairs with grief.
At this moment, nobody notices that there is a black Maybach parking in the open space of the Penn's gate. Yusef stares out the window, finding Macy' mother counting the money in her hand and leaving quickly with the bag full of money.
The driver asks the silent man, "Sir, this woman seems to be Miss Downey 's mother. She was in the lobby before I came."
Yusef looks away and instructs, "Arrange for some people to follow her and report to me at any time."
"Yes, sir."
...
All afternoon long, Yusef does not appear in the company.
Macy even takes the time to ask Yolanda for Yusef's timetable. Considering that it is Yusef who ordered, Yolanda dutifully gives it to Macy despite her discomfort.
After returning to her office and finishing the work that needs to be done as soon as possible, Macy sorts out the summary of the meeting just now, sends it to Yusef's computer, and also completes a backup in time. Until everything has been done, she begins to look over the documents of the South Sea project, which are brought back after the morning meeting.
Admittedly, Macy has a bit of headache since these documents, including various boring arrangements and clauses, there are really too much to finish in a short time. However, as soon as she thinks of Eliot's humiliation in public during the meeting, her whole body seems to be filled with energy again.
By leafing through these documents, Macy realizes the Penn's Group has been planning the project of the development of the land by the South Sea for more than one year, and all the follow-up work has beer arranged as well. This land, however, is still out of control.
For the first negotiation eight months ago, the second invitation half a year ago, and the most recent personal visit by a vice president of the Penn's three months ago, there is hardly any progress. It's no wonder that this project is so-called hot potato, and even Eliot strives to avoid taking over this job.
Rather than troubling themselves for such a tough project, to be honest, they'd better complete a few simple small projects, considering no one is willing to do anything thankless. In this case, why does Mr. Penn's father still insist on this project?
Is the benefit that this project can yield far more than expected?
Anyway, it is too hard for her to understand. Macy keeps focusing on checking the personal information of the head of SkyTrium and these boring documents.
Yusef returns to the company two hours later, which is even more than an hour after the time for employees to get off duty. The reason that he comes back is just because of a document. Barely has Yusef set foot when he sees the faint light shining through the small window of the room next to his office.
Walking up to the window, Yusef sees the girl reading documents carefully on the table...
Really? Working overtime on the first day?
Yusef frowns. After getting the documents and being ready to leave, he finds the girl has already stood in the doorway.
Catching Yusef's eyes, Macy freezes for a while, "Mr. Penn, I heard something just now, so I come to check."
Yusef closes the door behind him, "Have you eaten yet?"
"Yes."
Glancing at her, he says, "Get your stuffs and follow me now."
Macy thought that Yusef was going to take her home. The car, to her surprise, actually stops outside the door of Goblue Restaurant.
Goblue is a famous one-stop place of entertainment in City Marea. The first and second floors are restaurants, the third and fourth floors are bars, and the fifth to ninth floors are hotels. To be frank, Macy knows the owner of Goblue, Monte Gilbert, who is the third young master of Gilbert clan, since she met Monte once at a party before.
The moment they enter Goblue, a waiter leads them to the fourth floor directly. Just then a handsome man with thick eyebrows standing at the elevator door to greet them, "Yusef, you finally come to visit my restaurant. Didn't you mention that you were very interested in the new project of the Mencken's Group? For you, I especially invite Mr. Mencken's son, Ellison, today!"
The Penn's and the Gilbert's are close friends of many years' standing. Without doubt, Monte and Yusef have been good friends from childhood as well. Their personalities are very different, but they've never had flaming row with each other in these twenty years.
Macy, however, is unclear about the relationship between them, so she feels very surprised that Monte can speak to Yusef in this way.
"What's the point of inviting that guy? He is only a man of straw. Monte, when you want to cooperate with someone, at least you need to know some basic facts about their company in advance." "Well, I am just trying to fish for some information. Gee! This girl..."
Monte suddenly finds the girl behind Yusef. He steps forward and attempts to look at her face.
Before he takes a closer observation, Yusef has already thrown his arms around Macy's shoulders.
Monte is dumbfounded for a while after seeing Macy's face. He can't help sneering at her, "Isn't this Miss Downey? Yusef, you..."
With a meaningful smile, Monte looks at Yusef's hand, then at his face.
Yusef glances at him, "Don't poke your nose into what doesn't concern you."
"Well, I don't care at all. I'm just curious as you never let any women get close to you, but today you even offer to bring a..."
Before Monte finishes talking, all at once he notices Yusef's sharp gaze and then he catches on immediately.
"All right, forget about it!"
Monte gives a little shrug with his hands outstretched, leading them to a sofa.
There are six or seven men and women sitting on this large wrap-around sofa. Among all of them, the person sitting in the middle is a fair-skinned gorgeous girl with the red dress. Obviously, the smile freezes on her faces when she sees Yusef appearing with Macy.
Macy is not used to being cuddled by Yusef in public. What's more, she even knows some of them. In order to distance him, Macy gently slips out Yusef's arm.
In the dim light, she doesn't notice that, the man's face suddenly darkens as he is pushed away.00000
