Swear Not By The Wings

Chapter 20 Later

Hi, my name is Arrietty Spring and I still love chocolate!

The movie lights up the theater as I watch in anticipation. The part finally comes when the boy expresses his love for the girl. How romantic! I watch in awe and avert my gaze to the boy sitting next to me. As if he feels my eyes on him, Landon turns and looks at me. I blush when I realize that I've been caught.

"Why are you looking at me?" he whispers in a soothing voice. I shrug my shoulders and sink further into my seat. The boy chuckles and shakes his head at my goofy antics. When the movie ends, Landon drives me back home.

"Well, this is me," I smile at the boy when we arrive.

"I'll walk you to the front," he says. I internally squeal and allow him to open the door for me. Landon awkwardly guides me out of the car. We walk hand in hand all the way to the entrance of my house. I turn to Landon and grin widely.

"Thank you, it was really nice," I chirp, still nervous around the football player.

"Yeah, we should do it again sometime?" He suggests. I nod my head right away.

"I should get going now, goodnight Arrietty, " he farewells.

"Goodnight," I say already missing him as he walks away. Suddenly, the boy turns around and strolls back to me.

"Oh, and happy birthday," he speaks while grasping my hands in his much larger ones. His eyes shine under the stars. I stare into the orbs for what seems like an eternity. My eyes flutter close when the boy's face moves closer to mine. I flinch when the door kicks open.

"Hey! That's enough!" Jane declares.

"Yea!" Poppy agrees.

"You've had your fun with our friend for long enough, Landon!" Linden sassily states while walking up to me and dragging me into the house. She firmly seals the entrance and we all stare at each other. A couple of seconds later, the room is filled with laughter.

"Did he leave yet?" I ask in between giggles.

"Nope, he's still standing out there like a kicked puppy!" Jane confirms. I feel terrible and instantly rip the door back open.

"I'm sorry, Landon!" I apologize, shyly.

"No worries," he says still looking shaken. I bite my lip and quickly kiss the boy on his cheek. He laughs when I bolt away from him. I slam the door shut and press my back against it. I look to my right and see that my friends were watching the whole ordeal from the window. They squeal in excitement and make kissing sounds at me. I flush in embarrassment.

"How was the date, honey?" My mom wiggles her eyebrows at me.

"Oh my gosh, mom, stop!" I whine. The woman laughs at me and pats my head.

"Happy birthday," she says. I notice how the girls have disappeared and wonder where they went off to.

"Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday dear Arrietty! Happy birthday to you!" My friends sing while rubbing the cake on my nose.

"You're nineteen years old now! How does it feel to be an old lady?" Jane fakes being a news reporter and holds a hairbrush to my face. I smack the object out of her hands.

"You're crazy!" I shout playfully. My mom brings out the drinks and places it on the table. When she goes to turn around, she knocks into the pitcher. The iced tea spills all over her! The girls and I choke back a laugh.

"Oh no, my skirt! Arrietty, can you grab me a towel from upstairs?" My mother pleas. I nod and hike up the stairs. I open the door to my mom's room and fetch a rag. I stride towards the staircase but freeze in my tracks when I fee a breeze.

The wind is coming from my room. I step into my bedroom and notice that the window is open. I thought I closed it before I left! I huff and walk towards the opening. I shiver at the cold. My eyes widen when I see that the glass of the window has frost all over it. Surely this isn't possible, it's well into the spring season. I look up into the dark sky and gasp at what I see.

"You haven't forgotten me so soon, right little human?"

The end.
