Substitute Bride and Her Husband Who Disappeared

Chapter 123 It Was Just... Just a Joke

This time, Nancy's teary red eyes didn't soften Charlie's heart. Instead, it made him feel colder than ever.

He looked at her, each word falling like a hammer, "Nancy, I'm not a man who gives his heart easily. But once I do, and I am repaid with betrayal, I'd rather destroy it with my own hands!" Nancy's back stiffened sharply, even her tears seemed to freeze mid-fall.

The way Charlie looked at her was terrifying, as if he was talking about destroying her...

Her hand trembled, "Don't... Don't look at me like that. I... It was just... just a joke..."

"That joke isn't funny at all!"

Charlie threw down those icy words, his appetite lost. He put down his fork, walked into the living room and cast a glance back at Nancy.

Nancy sat there, tears streaming down her face. Her vulnerability made his heart ache. He wanted to go back and take her into his arms, but her words had stirred his anger!

He walked to the window, took out a packet of cigarettes from his pocket, lit one up and exhaled a whiff of smoke.

Looking out at the night sky, the bright moon and twinkling stars seemed to soothe his mood.

Wait a minute...

He had been with Nancy all this time, save for the two days she came to City Hando early with Vivian. Knowing Nancy's character, it was impossible for her to get involved with another man in such a short time. Love at first sight was a phrase that would never apply to Nancy!

After a moment of thought, he pulled out his phone and sent a message.

"Tom, look into Vivian!"

As he finished his cigarette, he stood by the window, hands in his pockets, waiting patiently.

Ten minutes later, his phone chirped.

He saw Tom Adams' number and promptly answered, "Young Master Firth, I've found that... Vivian has been involved with Alexander. She stayed in her room all day today because she and Alexander had been in the restroom at the venue the night before..."

"Alright, I got it."

Charlie was not angry, in fact, a smile played on his lips. "Good job. Starting from tomorrow, keep a close eye on Vivian!"

After hanging up, Charlie turned

around and saw Nancy still sitting at the dining table, tears delicately falling from her eyes. He marched over, face stern.

"Why are you crying?"

Nancy shook her head vigorously, "I...I'm not crying."

"Fine."

Charlie pulled out a tissue. As Nancy reached for it, he gently took it and dabbed at her face.

"Nan, I seriously considered your question. If my wife in name were to betray me, if there were a girl who could soothe my wounded soul in time, might not do such extreme things."

"Huh?"

Nancy looked up, staring blankly at Charlie. She was utterly surprised that he had come to such a conclusion so quickly.

Seeing her wide amber eyes, Charlie chuckled softly, "Alright, stop crying and eat your meal."

Nancy still stared at him, unable to comprehend what just happened.

"Heh..."

Charlie's finger gently tapped her forehead, "Am I that good-looking?"
