Chapter 2

The development of technology has made anything possible in this world. Nothing such as racism existed anymore. When a new life was brought to the world, the first mandatory task was getting needle shots that made them into look like asians. There wasn’t any fight, discrimination or war. Everyone was same and everything seemed equal and fair except the fact that humans were the slave of the technology they developed themselves. People lived until 400 years and if they wanted to live more, all they had to do was to freeze their body when their heart had stopped before while their brain was still functioning. This was something called cryonics which could happen as much as people wanted. When they were conscious, they would choose which year they would want to wake up and the government would unfreeze their body and bring them out of the pot on that exact year. Cryonics was something very common especially among the members of the government that had the absolute power. The biggest reason people would use cryonics was to live longer and for the labor. When they were over 100, the body became slow and the organs couldn’t function properly. The government then allowed people to get a long sleep in a cold pot, and while they were sleeping the scientists changed the old parts of the organs which turned them energetic again even they were hundreds of years old. This was possible because there wasn’t a concept of a country like the past. Before world war 7, when the government announced they would make cryonics legal, there were protests everywhere. People were arguing we were not the ones who could change the nature cycle that made all of the ecosystem and social issues such as overpopulation and the gap of poverty would become worse. Citizens started using weapons to fight and they set a bomb at the where the cold bodies were so the government had to stop making it formal. However, it was still happening legally especially the rich and strong ones and China had been supporting the cryonics company in secret from the citizens. After the world war 7 all the 196 countries finally were combined into one. This was when cryonics was made formal and because the government had too much power from the victory of war, no one could disobey the laws they made for them. If one was clever enough to catch the president’s attention, they were forced to get into the ice pots according to the decisions the government made. Inside the one big world, there were 6 big regions; region of environment, region of broadcast, region of education, region of development, region of finance and the main region where the president was in which was in charge of the whole system. The region of environment was in charge of announcing which day it was, D.D or C.D day and were in charge of keeping the data of how much the miners dug the ground each day. The region of broadcast was in charge of the A.I. robots everyone had. These robots were on of the most important thing people needed to live. They were like helpers; they made food for them, spread out everyday news in forms of radio and articles 3 times a day; 6am, 2pm and 11pm and they didn’t have any other ways to gain knowledge of what was happening around the world. The robots also kept track of their job and made all the announcements from the government so it was like a window which they saw their life. This made it easier for people to focus on their own job than any other time in history but also had the effect of making them become lazy. The region of broadcast was an individual American broadcast company until the world war 6 which was most influential in normal citizen’s life. After world war 7, this company was later bought by the government and was changed into the region of broadcast since then. The region of education chose who would go to WSA and specialize in science or become miners. The students that performed best or had an IQ above 150 got a chance to study at Einstein Technical University where they would sacrifice themselves as scientists under the government. However, there weren’t a lot of students in this university, most of them became miners. The government monitored each student when trey were getting middle school education; 24 hour through their own robots, supervised the students’ grades, looked at all the results of the PET scan of the students’ brains to see which part was most developed to see which job would best fit them. The miners were free from the region of education when they started working but those who went to WSA weren’t. They were rather more in touch when they did further studies. The representative of the educational region had lots of conferences with the students themselves and their teachers to see how they were doing. If they believed the student wasn’t progressing, they were also in charge of kicking them out of the school and sending them to somewhere or making them into miners. Region of development and region of finance weren’t well known. These 2 regions worked together and since the main buildings were very close to each other. This place collected the taxes and resources and decided where to spend money which wasn’t known to the citizens. Only 1% of the government had the access to the information and the building itself as well. The main region was where the president was and anything that was decided from the 5 regions had to pass this region to get approved. These systems have been working quite well and made the world more busier than before. People however, were not interested in what was happening around them. They only knew what region they belonged to and this was actually all they needed to know. The government assigned all of the people’s jobs and people had to follow it. 80% of it were miners that had to dig the crust of the earth to avoid the yellow dust and the abnormal weather that happened more recently these days. The role of the miners were crucial since the weather change was even worse these days. If it wasn’t underground, the air was polluted so bad that they couldn’t even recognize what was out there. From of 365 days, 360 were known as the ‘D.D’ which stood for dangerous days. On the D.D, no one was allowed to come out to the ground because of the toxic chemicals and the danger of accidents not being able to see anything according to the government. The rest of the 5 days were called ‘C.D.’ which stood for crystal day, a day that was very clear as crystal. When it was announced it was a C.D, everyone would come out to the ground for the whole day in their underwear until it changed to D.D. again. People would breathe in the fresh air and tan their skin from the skin in order to get vitamin D which they were lacking from poor food. However, there were rumors that a group of people from the government were taking the elevator and going to the ground every midnight even it was not C.D to do something from what the miners said. There were actually some loud noises that people could hear before they went to bed but none of them dared to tell this to anyone. What they cared was living their own life individually without caring for anyone else. Everyone seemed to live every day so busy but this never made their lives comfortable. They had to dig 100m of the ground everyday and their own robots would measure how much they dug accurately. If they didn’t make it that day, it would be reported to the representative of their region and food was controlled by this result. If they have finished digging the minimum amount, their robots made cold corn soup with a small loaf of bread twice a day. However, if they didn’t manage to dig, they were only given a small loaf of hard bread that was even hard to chew until they finished the overdue part was done. People worked every day so hard without even knowing the reason why. Their lives never changed or got better. The president was the only hope they had. Once a week, the government would gather all the miners from one region and give them and the representatives of their regions would give speeches saying they were doing a great job and this was the only way to save their own children who would be born in the future. However, people felt that the minimum digging height got higher every time they had speeches but the party denied this fact and punished those who brought up this topic. They said that they had gone mad while digging and that the government had the accurate data they didn’t have. They would bring out a point at a data table full of numbers and symbols miners couldn’t even interpret and explain that the quality of their lives has been improved 25% more. People didn’t have any records than their robots and since it said the same thing, the only thing they could do was just believe and continue digging the ground. The rest of the 15% was related to science and technology, students and scientists, and doctors. They were the ones who specialized in science technology in WSA or Einstein Technical School. The rest of the 5% was the government, the ones who had absolute power. Another Just one thing was impossible to stop the advance of technology, the pollution. People were now developing inside the ground and everyone lived underground since all the buildings were inside. A world where people lived outside and could move freely drinking fresh air. The children in this world couldn’t imagine such things. The children grew up with robots which they were gifted from the community when they went to elementary school at the age of 7. Robots were something like parents and helpers for them, perhaps their only friend for some children. After being educated the most basic steps of living they were each given a robot and lived with it forever even after the community chose a person to marry with. Normally, a miner would have to marry a miner and was against the law if they were in a relationship with the upper level people. Even miners however were influenced by the technology. They still knew their parents but didn’t have a strong bond with others since the students were each given a role from the community and had to obey everything they were ordered. If they didn’t, they knew they would get punished in some kind of a way. But they didn’t know how. Everyone who were taken away never returned back. But no one really cared about someone who suddenly disappeared since they didn’t meet others outside than schools. The children learned that communication was not necessary if it wasn’t something for their robots or outside of the school.
