Chapter 27. Delving Into the Past
Noah POV
“So, what happened was just an unfortunate accident.” I mused to myself while at the same time, I felt regret filled me with shame.
I let hate consume me for something that was not even there.
And what’s worse?
I shook my head for the years lost.
“Not really,” Brent murmured on the other end.
There was something in his voice that I picked up.
“What do you mean?” I said dully.
I couldn’t undo the years passed, but I could not stop myself from feeling an immense sense of loss.
I did not only lose my parents. I also lost my wife.
Brent cleared his throat. I could feel the hesitation in the prolonged
silence.
“Out with it, Brent. You know I can take it.” I hissed in impatience.
“Someone tampered with your car. The police could not find any suspect except your wife because she purportedly has the motive.”
“You said she was having an affair, and the police picked that up.”
I sighed. “Before the accident, Uncle Matt showed me pictures of Briana in suggestive shots with the same man. It was taken on
various occasions and in different locations.”
Brent was not in my employ back then. We met by accident after I came back from my long stay abroad.
I wanted him to investigate my relationship with Britney White in the past because back then, my memories were blurry. I only remembered parts but not everything in my past.
I remembered I was so in love with Britney, except for the circumstances surrounding our botched engagement. I never told anyone that I lost parts of my memory back then. Only Uncle Matt knew since he was my next of kin after I divorced Briana.
“Can you investigate for me? But do it secretly because I do not want to cause a stir. If the accident was premeditated. I do not want to alert the perpetrator.”
“Do you have any idea?”
I shook my head.
“I don’t. Our family has always been a target of unscrupulous individuals and organizations. I am sure that my parents had earned enemies here and there over the years. Silent enemies are deadly because we don’t know when and where they will strike.”
After my talk with Brent, I went to look for Uncle Matt. I wished him a happy birthday and was about to leave when he called out my
name.
“Yes, uncle.”
Uncle Matt smiled. “I wanted to thank you for your gift.”
I smiled. My gift was a vintage Patek Philippe Stainless Steel worth 12 million dollars I got in an auction in France.
I would have gotten it for my dad, but he was gone. So, I am giving it to my uncle
I turned around, intending to leave when Uncle Matt interrupted me
again
“Have you seen Briana? She got herself a new husband. Would you believe that she is now the wife of Marcus Ford?” Uncle Matt hissed contemptuously.
I nodded. The reminder that my ex wife now belongs to someone else leaves an unbearable ache in my heart.
“You should get married, too.” He suggested.
“Don’t give Briana the idea that you are still moping for her. Britney’s a great girl. She had been waiting for you for years to be ready. Isn’t it time to put her out of her misery?”
Something inside me ticked.
I don’t know. It must be because I hated it when people tried to sway me to their way of thinking.
I am not a child. I know what I want. One of the things I hate most. is when people try to fob off their opinions on me.
Even my father never dares cross my boundaries. Still, Uncle Matt. had always been a good relative to me, especially when I was. recovering from the accident.
When I had to leave the country for rehabilitation, he gladly took the reins of Hunter Enterprises for me.
I understand business was not for him. But Uncle Matt tried his best to fill in my shoes. That was good enough for me.

With him at the helm of Hunter Enterprises, I was allowed to seek further medical help without worrying about the company.
But this is something else. This is my life.
“Uncle Matt, you are the closest thing to a father to me now. So,
it’s just right to let you know that Britney and I broke up.”
Uncle Matt looked surprised. “Why? Ylove her.”
I shook my head. “But not enough to marry her.”
Uncle Matt looked pale. It looked like he was trying to control himself. I could not blame him. He always points out how right Britney is for me.
Britney’s background makes a perfect match for a man of my stature. He believes that we are suited to each other.
After a prolonged silence. I decided to leave.
“Goodnight, uncle,” I said and left the hotel for the night.
