Chapter 9 I Married You Hoping for Widowhood
Caroline turned to look at David, her eyes filled with surprise.
Was he actually standing up for me?
Ever since David had regained consciousness, he'd only shown her indifference. But now, out of nowhere, he was coming to her defense. It was almost unbelievable.
With David supporting Caroline, Elizabeth had to suppress her anger. She glared at Caroline fiercely before pulling her hand back.
"Mr. David," Elizabeth said sweetly, putting on her best innocent act, "I was just teasing Caroline. I didn't expect her to take it seriously and hurt my wrist. It's so painful."
"If it hurts, go see a doctor," David replied icily, showing no concern.
He then turned and walked away. "Caroline, come with me."
Was his discussion with Matthew already over? What had they talked about?
Caroline had no time to think. She quickly moved to follow him.
However, Elizabeth wasn't ready to give up. As Caroline walked past, she extended her foot slyly, aiming to trip Caroline and make her fall.
Caroline didn't notice and stumbled forward when her foot caught on something.
Elizabeth smiled smugly.
As Caroline hurtled forward, she closed her eyes, bracing herself for the inevitable fall. But instead, she felt strong arms wrap around her and lift her off the ground.
When she opened her eyes, she found herself staring at David's composed face.
He had caught her just in time.
"Thank you," Caroline murmured.
David didn't respond. He simply let her go, his expression as cold as ever.
"Caroline, how could you be so careless?" Elizabeth mocked, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "So clumsy
and ungraceful! Luckily, Mr. David was here to save you, or you would've embarrassed yourself."
Caroline glared at her. "You're the one who tripped me Stop pretending."
Elizabeth gasped, feigning innocence. "Caroline, don't make baseless accusations. Mr. David, look at her! She's blaming me for no reason!"
Elizabeth's fake performance infuriated Caroline,
I wanted to teach her a lesson once and for all!
When Caroline moved to step forward, David grabbed her and pulled her back into his arms.

"Enough," he warned her in a low voice. "You're not allowed to do anything to Elizabeth."
He held her firmly around the waist and didn't release her until they were inside the car.
Caroline frowned, utterly confused. "One second, you're defending me, and the next, you're stopping me from standing up to Elizabeth. What do you want from me?"
"Do I need to explain myself to you?" David retorted with an icy edge.
"I... I..." Caroline sputtered, feeling completely stifled by his response. "Fine, forget it; let's change the subject. What were you and my father discussing carlier?"
"That's none of your business," he said bluntly.
Caroline was left at a loss for words.
"And for the record," David added coldly, "I'll be divorcing you soon."
Her reaction was instant. She nodded eagerly. "Great!"
Finally, freedom was within reach!
David's face instantly hardened. "You're that desperate to get away from me?"
"I married you thinking I'd be a widow. Then you woke up, and honestly, I can't handle that."
David, the most eligible bachelor in the city, was now hearing that his wife preferred to be a widow rather than stay married to him.
Was she cursing me to die?
Without hesitation, he grabbed her by the neck and pulled her close. "I dare you to say that again," he demanded.
Caroline winced in pain, inhaling sharply but unable to respond.
David's voice turned icy. "Pull over."
The driver obeyed instantly.
"Get out," David said coldly. "Will you leave on your own, or do I have to throw you out?"
