As she spoke, David finished untying the ropes around her legs. Caroline immediately pulled her legs together, pressing her hands against the bed as she struggled to sit up.

Her face was deathly pale, her eyes hollow and lifeless, but her lips dazzling red. Because she had bitten them so hard, she had drawn blood. She had no strength left to stand. She could only sit there, her gaze sweeping over every person in the room.

Then, she lowered her eyes. And when she lifted them again, she looked straight at David. ".... I hate you."
