Chapter 3 A best friend is forever
I actually left the house with a smile on my face even though she had taken my book. She did get burned on the hand pretty good and that squeal ill remember forever! Also, he won’t be getting that milk he’s expecting. Id call that a win-win for me and with the library my destination I didn’t need the book at the moment. WIN WIN WIN? I guess you could say it felt pretty great to finally win a battle in the war.
The powers I had were starting to come to my advantage without me doing anything. It seemed like they were triggered by my emotions. What made it interesting is that Loraine Silver had some of the same powers. That’s why I had to know more about her ASAP.
Part of me thought I was crazy. Searching for a woman who supposedly slept with an evil God to see if she’s my mother because we have the same last name and look alike. But at this point, the fire was so intense I’d do anything to find someone like me and get some answers. Reading about her made me feel like she would understand even if she wasn’t my mother.
I was nearing the halfway point between my house and library when I saw Assail pop out from a couple of streets ahead. He had his back to me going in the direction of the library.
Now I know I told Kitai I would stay away from him but he did take down those guys for me. As well as being nice to me all day while I was mean to him. “Whats the worst that could happen?” I thought to myself.
“Hey Assail!” I called out ahead.
He stopped and turned to face me then cracked a smile and waved back.
“Oh, hey!” He replied.
“Wait up,” I said as I began a slight jog in his direction.
He waited for me to catch up to him.
“Where ya headed?” I asked.
“I’m actually on my way to the library.” He replied.
“Oh wow!” I said. “So am I.”
“Great, would you like to walk with me?” He inquired.
“Sure,” I agreed.
We continued walking to the library together. As we walked I thought maybe I was wrong about Assail. He’s going to the library which means he may have had a reason to be there earlier when I saw him. And he was now enrolled in school so he had a reason to be in the hallway as well. Not to mention he knew me for all of an hour and still defended me against Chris’s goons. I was so caught up in being an outcast and keeping my wall up I hadn’t realized that he never once did anything wrong. I had pre-judged him all day when he had done nothing to me. I was determined to let my wall down and give him a chance.
“How do you like it here so far Assail?”
“Oh, it’s alright, Its very different for me because I’ve never left Brazil.”
“Ive never even left Nevada” I responded.
“Really?” He looked surprised.
“Nope, sad right?” I was slightly embarrassed that I had never been outside of the state with the California State Line being less than an hour away.
“Oh well, you’re not dead so you still have time.” He smirked.
I thought to myself “that’s a harsh choice of words,” but I convinced myself that maybe that’s just how they talk to each other in Brazil.
“Yea, I guess that’s true,” I responded.
“Where would you like to go?” He asked
“Anywhere at this point!” I responded.
“Anywhere like state or anywhere like out of the country?”
“Assail if I could go to an island and be away from humans I would be happy with that.”
“Wow,” he said. “I’ve never met anyone so eager to leave their home, especially in America.”
“Yea, Well it may not be all its cracked up to be for some people.”
“I see” He responded.
As we continued walking I couldn’t help but notice his burn over and over. It was precise Like he had been branded on his face and didn’t move a muscle when it happened. I wanted to ask him about it but I felt it may have been too personal of a story to tell on the first-day meeting. Besides he never once asked about my gloves. Being in Las Vegas mid-summer with gloves on was the equivalent of going outside in the winter and shoving snow in your gloves. It was just unheard of which made pretty much everyone ask why I wore them. I respected his decision to not ask about my gloves and decided not to ask him anything personal.
“Would you recommend anywhere?” I asked.
“Well I’ve always heard America was the best but if you don’t like it here and you say you’d prefer more of an Island with fewer humans. Id have to say Astral.”
“Astral?” I thought to myself.
I had never heard of it but for some reason, it sounded familiar to my ears.
“Whats that?” I asked him to gather more knowledge.
“Its a Country in the heart of the North Atlantic Ocean,” he replied. “Its supposed to be a Country of superior beings.
“Oh, I’ve never heard of that one before, but I’m sure there’s a few out there I have no knowledge of.” I joked.
I had never heard of a Country in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean and I’ve never seen any land there on our maps or globes. But he didn’t seem like he was cracking a joke. I didn’t detect any sarcasm when he said it and he didn’t smile. Not to mention it seemed like he listened to exactly what I said I would like to form his answer. No one listened to me like that except for Kitai. I was intrigued.
“Why would Kitai ever want me to stay away from this guy. is he jealous?” I thought to myself. “Kitai was always my only friend so there was never any competition but because I was required to spend time with him maybe Kitai thinks we are friends now and he’s been replaced. Id never replace Kitai though, he knows that. Right?”
“Well, it’s not nearly as popular as Countries like America.” He replied.
“Why would you recommend there? is their population lower or something?”
“From what I’ve heard a lower population with higher quality people.”
That was music to my ears. He couldn’t have said any better words.
“Then that’s the place I want to be.” I smiled. “ill have to look into it.”
“Maybe you can be a Foreign exchange student to their country like I am to yours” He giggled.
“Yea maybe,” I replied.
However, the moment he said that 1000 thoughts of how I could escape my wretched life flooded into my mind and he had given me my first place to look forward to. He was intriguing as much as he was inspiring. “Maybe I should add Brazil to my list.” I thought to myself. “This guy isn’t the worst I’ve met by a long shot. If there is more like him where he came from I would at the least be more social.
“Could being a foreign exchange student work?” I wondered for a moment but almost immediately abolished the idea. My foster parents would never sign off on that. It would probably stop their checks and they’d never send money to me overseas. Id probably die of starvation in a foreign country.
I thought again of running away. That probably would’ve worked but from the news, I didn’t think there were any great states I was missing out on. It would be the same story in a different state. “Scratch that idea,” I thought to myself.
How could I possibly make it to another country and have the funds to survive on my own. Sounds like a shot in the dark but it would be so worth it if I could manage to make it happen.
We continued our journey to the library talking mostly about random subjects and differences in our countries.
He was a Straight A student and had the wishes of exploring the world which is why he knew about Astral. Even though he didn’t know much about it. He became a foreign exchange student to start his travels as soon as possible.
The entire walk to the library he didn’t annoy me once. He was nice, respectful and even made sure he walked closer to the road on the sidewalks. The more we talked the more I was inspired and motivated. It was refreshing to meet someone new I could talk to.
We were finally arriving at the library. Usually, the Nevada sun was shining bright when it was earlier in the day but the closer we got to the library the darker it got. It was like hours were going by in minutes. Only when I looked up it was extremely dark clouds in front of the sun blocking the light.
“It doesn’t rain here often right?” Assail asked.
“No, very rarely actually,” I replied.
The clouds were strange, darker than usual. Also whenever it did rain in Las Vegas, the entire sky was cloudy not just a few clouds. The few clouds that were in the sky were all situated in front of the sun it was like an eclipse but not as dark outside because it was just clouded.
We entered the library once again to the ice cold air conditioner. I spot Mrs. Green Across the lobby and wave to her. I was sure she saw me but she put her head down and picked up the phone like she had just remembered to make an urgent phone call. I shrugged it off and Assail and I entered the lobby.
“What are you looking for here a book?” I asked as I scanned the room for Antonio.
“Oh yeah, I’m a reader.” he responded. “are you?”
“No, not really. I’m here looking for a friend.”
“Oh ok well nice to see you again.” he walked towards the non-fiction book isles.
I continued scanning for Antonio. He was about the same height as me and wore glasses. He couldn’t have been very old because he had a peach fuzz mustache and beard. I had seen him before in the library so I assumed he frequented it a lot or maybe even worked there. “Hopefully he’s somewhere around here,” I thought to myself as I began walking aimlessly through the library scanning the premise for Antonio but there was no sign of him.
I decided to go where the Mythology books were. With my new interest in mind, I planned to read a little for a bit to burn time in hopes that he would arrive. The Mythology section wasn’t very popular in our city. The isle was almost always empty even when the library was full.
Most of the books looked ancient. If they cleared the section and replaced it with something more modern they would probably have more service.
I grabbed a random book without even looking at the title opened it and began reading. Some of the stories I came across were absolutely astonishing and the way it was written they made it seem so realistic and true. While many others were just simply unbelievable. Nonetheless, the book was interesting. I thought to myself. “Why have I never looked into this stuff?” These Gods like in the Maverick Mythology book had reminded me a lot of myself in their own ways.
After reading what felt like 100 chapters because I don’t read much I finally decided to leave but just as I stood to return the book Antonio strolls into the library with takeout in his hand. “oh he was out for lunch” I thought.
“Hey, Antonio!” I called out to him.
“Shhhhhhh!” Mrs. Green loudly whispered from her post. She could be in the back of the library and would still make it to the front to shush someone making too much noise in the library.
“Sorry.” I smiled. I mouthed it silently instead of talking out loud.
“Oh hey Skye, Whats up back for another crash course in mythology?” Antonio said smiling.
As he came in my direction. He looked excited, happy to see me like he didn’t expect to ever see me again even though he gave me the book.
“Yea actually” I responded.
“I was wondering what else you could tell me about Maverick Mythology?”
“Well sure, come with me to my section.”
I followed Antonio to his desk in the library. The desk was piled with books and papers. He either worked here or did a ton of research. Either way, he knew a lot and I was determined to get more answers.
“Have a seat?” he said, “Ill clear off these books, I wasn’t expecting anyone today.”
“Oh its fine, I don’t mind.” I said.
I was saying it to be nice. It was actually pretty nerve wrecking to see how unorganized it was. But he took my words to heart and just slid some of the books aside rather than actually cleaning the desk off.
He opened his bag and began taking out his lunch. “So what did you want to know. Was there something in the Maverick Mythology book that peaked your interest?”
“Well, nothing in particular,” I replied. “Just curious about some things.”
I probably should have asked him about my powers. After all, this was the first time I had ever seen someone that could even possibly be my mother even if it was just a picture and name in a mythology book. What if she is the author of the book and this was her way of expressing what she had done. Or maybe she was the source of a story for another author and they know her personally. Either way, Antonio was the only person that knew a lot about this which would make him the best person to help me.
However, I had promised myself that I would tell Kitai before anyone. He was my best friend it would be disrespectful to tell anyone before him.
“Ok cool, what did you want to know?” he asked. “you couldn’t have read that book that fast.” he laughed.
“of course not” I replied with a smile.
“So whats up?”
“Ok, so you know how you mentioned the Goddess of Nature instilling powers on some hidden land.”
“Oh, yea.”
“You wouldn’t happen to know the name of this land or where it is, would you?”
“Well I can’t recall the name at this moment,” he stared into the open space like he was daydreaming. “But I’m pretty sure it was said to be in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean.”
“There it is again.” I thought to myself.
“Is it called Astral?” I inquired.
“As a matter of fact I think you’re right.” he looked surprised.
“Yes Astral!” that is it.
He was looking at his computer at this point. I figured he was searching things about Maverick Mythology.
I was baffled because Assail had just mentioned it not long ago and confused because he seemed like he truly believed it was real but here Antonio was telling me it’s in a Mythology book. Why did Assail make it seem that he was sure it existed? I knew I had to find Assail because he believed it was real so he would probably give me real information vs mythology information. Or maybe the two were the same? I wasn’t sure, all I knew was that Astral was a place possibly in both the real world and books.
“Hey, can you give me a minute,” I said as I stood up to walk away.
“Sure, if you need me ill be here eating behind these books.” he smiled.
I headed through the library to find Assail and talk to him more about Astral. I assumed he was in the reading section and indeed he was.
“Pssst.” whispered to him.
Didn’t want Mrs. Green popping up out of nowhere on me stabbing my ears with her sharp shushes.
He turned in his chair to face me and threw his hand in the air signaling me to come over.
“3 times in one day? To what do I owe the pleasure of your company?” he said as I neared where he was sitting.
“Ha, what are you reading?” I replied
“Oh, nothing serious a book whose entertainment value doesn’t compare to yours.”
I blushed, feeling caught up because I hadn’t blushed in so long I forgot what it felt like. “Smooth with his words,” I thought as I approached and sat next to him. I hadn’t noticed his cologne before but I appreciated that he didn’t drown himself in it. It was a sweet scent with just the right amount evenly dispersed. Normally, guys, our age would spray so much it would burn your nostrils if they got to close.
“You’re funny” I responded. “but I wanted to ask you something.”
“Sure, shoot!”
“You know how you were telling me about the country Astral earlier?”
“Yea of course.” He turned slightly as if he had gotten more interested in what I was about to say.
“I know this may sound crazy but do you think that country may be a Myth?”
“Well no, what would compel you to say that?” He had a genuinely confused look. In his mind, this place was 100% real.
“Its just I have this book at home and Astral is a setting based in that book…”
“Maverick Mythology,” He said cutting me off.
This guy had to know everything. He knew exactly what I was thinking like he was extremely familiar with the book. Which begged the question if he was crazy and thought the book was real.
“I’ve read that book ya know,” he said.
“Really? the entire book?” I replied in awe because the book was no small one. After all, it is a Mythology book.
Let’s just say of all the books Antonio carried when I knocked him down. The Maverick Mythology was near the bottom and he had them stacked in the shape of a triangle.
“Oh yea Its pretty interesting, a page turner if I do say so myself. You know now that I think about it you look just like Lorain Silver.” He smiled. “Maybe that’s why I said Astral earlier I guess you remind me of Gods and their chosen superiors.”
I tried to keep my blush in but I was sure my mocha colored glowing skin had somehow turned red by now.
“Thanks, but if you know its a Myth why would you recommend it?” I said trying to keep my composure.
“Well I like to believe mythology is based on real things only called mythology to hide and tell they’re true stories in plain sight. Granted they all can’t completely be true but there are certain stories in certain mythologies that I believe to be true and real as Earth and us Humans.” He said. “Gotta stay open-minded.”
“So he knew it was a Country in a book he’s just as optimistic as they come.” I thought.
At this point, I didn’t believe it was real country but I was allured to continue talking to him. I admired his optimism and he was a great conversationalist. It was like talking to a therapist without talking about your problems. Just good conversation.
“So what do you know about Astral?” I only asked because it was either Assail or Antonio and Antonio was stuffing his face with a five dollar footlong so I thought it best to leave him be at the moment.
“Well, legend has it Astral is a Land with 5 Regions and to map the cornerstone of each region you have to draw a 5 point star over a map of the land.”
“Why would you want to know where the cornerstone is?” I asked.
“In their land, the cornerstones are basically what you all call the Capital of the state in this country, Only their capitals hold certain powers if attained can be used personally and given to others.”
“That must be what Antonio was telling me about” I responded.
“What did this Antonio say?” he asked.
You could tell I had his full curiosity. He was eager to hear of others opinions on the subject.
“He was telling me about Loraine Silver and how she went into some caves and found what was known as The Soul of Fire to make her Queen of the Cave Region.”
“Yea that’s right and she instilled some of it in her daughter and sent her through a portal.” He added
“Daughter!” I responded in shock.
“Shuuussshhhhhh!!”
I wasn’t sure where Mrs. Green was but I was sure that was meant for me.
“Yea she had a daughter with Fugaze. Did he not mention that?”
“Well no neither does the book,” I replied.
“Oh, that’s strange,” he said. “I thought for sure it would be in there.”
The tables had turned and the fire burned.
“All this time she had a daughter,” I thought.
Assail had brought a whole new world to my perspective. Not even Kitai was able to do that. Not that he ever tried but he froze when I mentioned Maverick Mythology like he knew something. My best friend was hiding things that a guy I met today was happy to talk to me about.
“How do you know she had a daughter” I inquired.
“I’m not sure, Maybe I read another book in Brazil” he replied.
“I see, So what did the other regions have?”
“If I recall correctly there were the plains that held a Garden of fruit and if you consumed the Fruit you were granted the powers to manipulate two of the four powers you didn’t currently possess. They were the powers of the Goddess that ruled over Earth.” He explained. “Air, Ground, Fire, and Water Manipulation.”
“The Goddess of Nature, Games & Festivities,” I said.
“Yea exactly, 2nd came the Desert. Its said in the middle of the desert there were 3 sand bowls and if you poured water into it and drank you would be given the powers to manipulate the ground.” He continued.
“And the caves give you the power to manipulate fire.” I responded, “Antonio told me about Loraine going to the caves.”
“That’s right, then came the islands of the land. They had some sacred waterfall that if you drank from you were…
“Given the powers to manipulate water.”
We said it at the same time and had that funny awkward silence before we both cracked into a giggle.
“yea you get whats going on,” he said.
As he was about to tell me about the fifth region Kitai stormed into the reading section.
“Skye, can I talk to you for a minute.” He looked at Assail. “In private.”
“yea sure” I responded.
I knew he was angry with me and he had reason to be because I gave him my word. However, Assail had told me more about something I asked about than Kitai. On top of that, he had been nice all day and fought for me so I had every reason to talk to him.
Kitai begins leading me out of the reading section through the library until we stop in the Mythology section.
“Well, this is private as it gets,” I said, “What do you want Kitai?”
“You said you’d stay away from him.” He replied with fire in his eyes.
“Yea well you didn’t want to tell me about Maverick Mythology and he did.” I shot back.
“Maverick Mythology?” He jerked his head back and squinted his already slim eyes in confusion. “that’s what this is about?”
“Yea, I asked what you knew about it and you said not much. He knew a lot and was just telling me about it. Whats so bad about getting a crash course vs reading a whole book.”
“Wait, What did he tell you exactly?”
“He was saying something about the land of Astral and how the Goddess of Nature instilled powers in 5 regions of it. He was getting to the fifth before you barged in.”
“Skye you have to come with me right now.” Kitai demanded.
“I don’t think so,” I replied. “He’s not finished telling me about it.”
“I will tell you whatever you want to know just come with me.”
“Why do I have to come with you when he’s already in the process of telling me what I want to know?” I inquired.
“Skye you have to trust me.”
“I do of course, but you aren’t telling me anything right now and he is so ill come back when you’re ready to tell me what you’re hiding.”
I turned to walk away from Kitai. For a moment I was nervous because I thought he would chase me down the isle and grab my arm to get my attention once more like the friends and lovers in movies. “His hand will get burned,” I thought, but as I reached the end of the isle I didn’t hear any footsteps following.
When I reached the end of the isle something was strange. A full on storm had started outside and the library that just had people in every section was now completely empty. I went to the reading section and Assail was gone. I walked through the lobby still to no avail. Even Mrs. Green had left her post.
The storm clouds had grown thicker, wider and the thunder louder. I walked back to the mythology section where I had left Kitai but he was also nowhere to be found. The lightning strikes could be seen through the library windows they looked like they were striking the land around the Library. I searched the entire front end of the library and there was no one in sight. I returned to the lobby when all of a sudden it happened.
The library went dark. The storm had ruptured the power box. Now darker than it was empty I crept around the Library headed for the front doors. Using the flashes from the lightning strikes as a guiding light I eventually made it to the front door only to find out they were locked.
“What!” I exclaimed as I rattled the handle.
I knew the library couldn’t have closed. I had just gotten here not that long ago and there were plenty of people here. Not to mention the library closed at 9pm and it was only nearing the 6pm hour. I made my way back to the lobby because it was the most open area and the glass dome above the lobby gave off the most light.
“Hello! I yelled in an attempt to get anyone that might be insides attention.
No one answered not even Mrs. Green out of the woodworks to shush me. It was dark and scary. I stood for a moment waiting for the next strike to see where I would go to find another exit. When the next strike flashed I fell to the floor.
I was startled, frightened even. I could have sworn I saw Assail standing before me when the light flashed but when I stood up and reached around me there was no one. I called out to him with no answer. I was sure I had seen him but even more sure he was gone. Not an extra breath or footstep did I hear in the library. It was in total silence.
After a minute or two more of searching for an exit the backup generators to the library kicked in and the library was dimly lit. I immediately started towards the back of the library. There must’ve been a back exit because there were no parking spots for employees in the front.
As I made my way to the back of the library I couldn’t help but think how horrible the walk home would be in the storm that had started. I even thought about staying in the library for a while. I had saw videos online of people spending the night in stores and the Library did have the best Wifi. If only I had a phone charger.
I made it to the back of the Library when I spotted Kitai he was pushing with all his strength to get the back door open. The door was slightly open but it seemed like the wind outside was so strong he couldn’t get it open enough to exit.
“Kitai!” I called out to him.
He looked up at me with great relief like he had been looking for me when the power went out but couldn’t find me. He leaned off the open the door and it slammed shut. He ran towards me in a hurry as if someone was after us.
“Skye, I was looking all over for you!”
“Where is everybody?” I asked.
“I’ll tell you everything but first we have to get out of here!” he exclaimed.
“Not in that storm!” I said. “It looks like a Tornado out there.”
I was prepared to walk home in a simple rainstorm but not in a natural disaster.
“More like a hurricane actually,” he replied.
“Well, that’s even worse!”
“Skye I don’t have time to explain everything right now you’re just going to have to trust me and help me get us out of here.”
“I think we’re safer in here right now Kitai and where did everybody go? One minute the library is full the next its empty.”
“Skye I will tell you everything if you just please help me get this door open.”
“You can’t tell me where everybody in the library went but you expect me to walk into a hurricane with you?” I questioned.
“The storm is not the problem. The problem is inside this library,” he said.
“What?” I said in disbelief. “ How is there a problem here when no one is here.”
“That’s just it” he replied with a stern face “you don’t find it weird that two seconds ago the library was full and now its empty.”
“Yea but…”
“Skye there are some things about you that even you don’t know.”
“Oh, really whats that?” I shot back.
He took a deep sigh as if he was about to spill all of his dirty secrets but he instead turned back toward the door.
“I can’t tell you right now but if you help me get out of here I promise I will tell you everything.”
“Well that’s not good enough to make me walk into a hurricane Kitai I’m sorry,” I said as I turned to walk back to the lobby
“The fifth region is the Mountains!” He yelled down the hallway.
I stopped to turn around. “What was so hard about that?” I replied
“In the region stands the tallest and most dangerous mountain on planet earth.”
“So you’re telling me Mt. Everest is on Astral?” I said sarcastically.
“No, Mt. Everest is the tallest mountain on earth as far as humans know but not as far as the Gods know and create.”
“So what power do the mountains hold? I asked.
“Near the peak of the mountain, there are what they call Steam clouds.”
“Steam clouds?” I said confused.
“Yes, and if you reach the top of the mountain and breath in the thick air of the clouds you’d be
Designated Leader of the Region with the power to manipulate Air and the clouds. In addition to that, you’d be able to give that power to others rather than having it only for yourself. Same goes for anyone that locates and harnesses the powers of the other regions.”
“So why did you not want to tell me about this earlier?”
“Because the more you knew about your home and people the more you would want to go back.”
“Wait, what!” I Exclaimed. “Are you saying that I am part of the Maverick Mythology book?”
“I’m saying you’re a direct descendant of someone in that book.
“Ok Kitai, you’re creeping me out. First, you want me to walk into a hurricane with you and now you’re telling me I’m the child of someone in a Mythology book?”
“Loraine Silver!” He said. “I know that’s what had you interested in that Mythology book.”
I froze this whole time he knew and didn’t say anything. How long did he know this? We had been friends since we met at age 12. He showed up in my life the same summer I found out the Fire inside me grew more intense. It was perfect timing because I didn’t know what to do and had no friends to talk to until he showed up. I was a bottle full of emotion sealed tight and he opened it allowing me to talk about things and decompress which helped calm the fire inside. Then there was that vibe thing I had with Assail earlier of course we shared.
“She is your mother Skye.”
“That’s ridiculous,” I said. “I’m going back to the front to wait for the storm to subside.”
Just as I said that and turned to go back to the library a loud scream came echoing through the hallway. The voice was familiar. Although I had never heard Mrs. Green Scream I was sure it was hers.
“That’s Mrs. Green,” I said. “She sounds like she’s in trouble, we have to go help her!”
“No,” Kitai yelled. “We have to get out of here.”
The thunder outside roaring louder than ever I could hardly hear what he had said.
“What do you mean no?” I asked with a shocked look. “Mrs. Green has always been nice to us the least we can do is check on her”
“Mrs. Green is fine trust me, you don’t need to worry about her right now.” He assured me as he walked backwards towards the door.
“How do you know she’s even here? I checked the library even yelled to see if she would shush me.” I replied. “What are you not telling me?”
“Skye we don’t have time for this right now,” he said as he set up to give the door another push.
“I’ll always have time to check on Mrs. Green and see if she’s alright.” I responded.
I turned away and walked towards where the scream came from. This time I heard those footsteps I was expecting in the mythology book isle. I turned around quickly so he wouldn’t grab my arm and burn himself.
“Are you coming with me or not?” I said as he approached me.
“No, and I can’t let you go out there either.”
“Why not, whats out there?” I asked.
Then suddenly there was another scream again resembling the voice of Mrs. Green.
“We have to check on her!” I exclaimed.
As I turned to walk away, my stomach turning flips for what may be happening to Mrs. Green. Just a minute ago the library was full, then empty and now there are people in it again. I wasn’t sure what was happening but I was sure I wouldn’t let Mrs. Green scream without checking on her. I began walking briskly back to the front of the library when I felt it.
There was a hand on my arm, but they weren’t snatching their hand away as if they had been burned. The hand held my skin firmly without so much as a quiver. I became motionless. No one had ever touched me since I could remember the fire running through my veins, But here I was in a dim library, with a hurricane outside and none other than my best friend grasping my arm.
“I know that your skin is like fire Skye but I’m still able to make contact with it. there is a reason for that and I will tell you but you have to trust that Mrs. Green is fine & come with me. It’s not safe here.”
Kitai was my best friend and now I knew that he knew more about me than I thought he did.
“Ok,” I said “but how can we get out with the wind that strong? Even if we do how can we survive that storm?”
“Skye you have the blood of one of the strongest Gods in your body and the power of the Queen of the Caves. If anyone can help me get that door open in here it’s you. Once we get the door open I can handle it from there we will be safe.”
I trusted Kitai with my life at that moment. He was my best friend and had just shown me that he knew my deepest secret already. In conjunction to that my power didn’t affect him like everyone else. I walked back to the door with him and together we began pushing.
“Why is this wind so strong,” I said. “and how can there be a hurricane in the desert?”
“”There’s a lot you don’t know Skye, but I promise when we’re out of here ill tell you now push,”
