Singularity

Chapter 16

Kira left without another word and made her way to the weapons storage room. She was dusting the sword rack when she felt the cold chill down her spine. She smiled and put the rag down.

“You might as well show yourself. I know you’re there.” She said quietly.

Domascus stepped out of the shadows and looked at her silently for a moment.

“I see you didn’t run very far.” She commented.

“There was something I had to know.” He said as he looked in her eyes. “Why?”

“I don’t know.” She replied. “You didn’t want to do it.”

“No, I didn’t.” He smiled.

“You had more than enough opportunity to and yet you wouldn’t. My father says it’s because I’m worth more to you alive.” She stated.

“Is that so?” He asked.

“I died you know. And I didn’t come back the same.” She sighed.

“I’m sorry.” He replied sadly and hung his head.

“They told me all the terrible things you have done.” She said.

“They’re all true.” He admitted.

“Why?” She asked catching him off guard.

“It don’t matter.” He smiled. “Stop being so nice to me Kira.” He turned to go.

“No,” She stated defiantly and reached out to touch his cheek.

He stopped, looking as if he was about to cry. “What’s this?” He took hold of her wrist as he noticed the bracelet.

“I can’t be without it.” She replied.

“I don’t understand.” He shook his head.

“My power is different. I can’t control it. I wanted to kill.” Her voice trailed off.

“Bullshit Kira.” He shook her harshly. “You’re not like me. You can control it. You can master it. Give yourself the chance.” He demanded.

“It’s better this way.” She said as she pulled away. “You should go before someone sees you.”

“Maybe I deserve to be found.” He smirked. “They deserve justice.”

“I don’t see it that way. You have a chance at a second beginning.” She prodded.

“Even after I killed your mother?” He replied with raised eyebrow.

“Do you know how long you were in prison for?” She growled.

“For nearly seventeen years I fought to break free of that place.” He sighed. “I had given up and then I felt it, a small crack. I hit it so hard I almost didn’t realize.”

“So, it was self defense wasn’t it?” She stated. “You wanted to be free. Honestly, she ruined both our lives. I’m the reason she’s dead. You were just the tool.”

“You set me free?” He asked astonished.

“At the time I didn’t know what I was doing but yes it was me.”

“Thank you,” He said softly.

“What I don’t get is why you hid the truth from me?” She asked.

“Isn’t it easier to be known without knowing?” He asked. “I was going to tell you but that bastard child interrupted us.”

“I know that’s why I understood what you did. We’re not that different especially when we’re cornered.” She replied.

“If you’ll let me, I can show you many things.” He said. “Starting with this.” He slid the bracelet from her wrist and stuck it in his pocket.

“Give that back.” She protested.

“Take it back.” He demanded.

Kira felt the rage building. It scared her. She wanted it to stop. Domascus drew his sword and in that moment she snapped. Her swords pulled free of the sheath and snapped open. Energy poured through her igniting a fire within from every stroke of the blade. The fury was pure and as quick as she was she missed the hilt of his sword and it connected with her jaw. Blood dripped from her lips as she let out a growl, took a leap and head butted him.

As Domascus’ blood welled to the surface he wrapped his arms around Kira. Before she knew it their lips were pressed together and they rolled across the stone floor. When she pulled away he lay there beneath her, his blue eyes shining with pride and admiration.

“Our kind of power needs to be fed, channeled into something, or it will consume us. You can’t keep it locked up forever or you’ll find a fate worse than death.” He said brushing the hair from her face.

“Wow,” She whispered and pulled away.

Kira had what she had fought for. She placed it on her wrist smiled at him and said, “I understand, but I’m still not ready.”

He laughed, “We can practice again if you wish.”

“Maybe,” She smiled.

He kissed her again making her skin tingle. “Come away with me.”

“I can’t. I have a responsibility to my people.” She replied. “You must go now. They come for me.”

Domascus couldn’t argue. He felt it too. He faded away into the darkness. Kira stood, collected her weapons, and turned just in time to see Michalei in the door way.

“You’re late.” He stated.

“You’re surprised?” She grinned.

“What are you doing Kira?” He rubbed his eyes and sighed.

“I’m adjusting.” She replied as she brushed past him. “Get used to it.”
