Chapter 2
Sophia's mind was running a hundred miles per minute as she thought of a way to get the job done without any unnecessary
problems.
After taking two steps, Samuel seemed to have thought of something.
He suddenly said, "By the way, I forgot to tell you that the marketing department of the Evans Group requires the evaluation
consultant of the cooperative company to participate in the new staff interview of their group. In other words, if you want to
complete the evaluation work for these two months, you have to think about how to pass the interview of the Evans Group first."
Hearing this, Sophia realized why Garry suddenly took an extended leave.
Anyone from Frostford could attest to the borderline abnormal difficulty of the interview for Evans Group.
Sophia also found it strange how such a big project was given to her since, according to the qualifications, it shouldn't be for her.
Everyone knew that this kind of challenging big project was like a gamble, and if you did it well, you were likely to be a hit in the
field, while on the contrary, you might also be infamous.
Hence, Garry and other experienced people did not want to gamble with Evans Group.
She wondered if she should also take an extended leave like Garry and push this project to the next poor, unsuspecting
employee.
But Sophia did not live a comfortable life like Garry.
She was the only breadwinner of her family, so for the sake of her mother's medicine and Emma's tuition fees, she could only
suppress the uneasiness in her heart and deal with what was to come.
Time passed by quickly, and then it was already the afternoon.
The clock on the wall indicated that it was already 5:00 PM.
Sophia quickly turned off her computer and got off work.
Perhaps it was because she hadn't lived in Frostford City for a few years that she forgot to bring an umbrella.
She gritted her teeth and had to rush out of the company building in the rain, rushing to pick up her daughter, Emma.
When she arrived at the school's entrance after she took the bus, she saw Emma alone by the school gates with her little bag on
her back, looking very pitiful.
The little girl had seen her mother from far away and then laughed at how disheveled she looked.
"Mom.."
Emma was mature for her age.She knew that her mother was busy with work, so she never complained whenever she would
pick her up late.
Sophia felt like the luckiest mother to have such a considerate daughter like Emma.
Sophia walked over to pick up Emma and thanked the security guard for looking after her.
During the days when she would come back to this city, she was usually busy with work and had to take care of her sick mother.
So Sophia was the first to send her child to school and the last person to pick her up almost every day.
Fortunately, she had the help of the security guard every time.
Otherwise, she had to spend more time picking up her daughter, which would affect her job.
The sky had already cleared up on their way home.
Sophia held Emma's hand and slowly walked towards the bus station. She listened to Emma's soft voice as she talked about
what happened in school today.
"Mom, I have a boyfriend today.I heard the teacher say that he looked just like his dad.She said that his dad was also a president
of a big company.I heard that his family is very, very, very rich!"
Emma's vocabulary was still quite limited, so she used her hands to make exaggerated gestures.Emma looked really cute and
funny.Sophia couldn't help but laugh.
Sophia felt the exhaustion escape her body because of her daughter's adorable actions. She bent over and lovingly tapped her
small nose, asking in amusement, "Is that so? Then what is his name?"
"Quentin! His name is Quentin Evans" Emma said with a wide innocent smile.
Sophia's body stiffened as she felt her heart clench.
Evans? The CEO of a big company? There weren't many people with the surname Evans in this city, and there were even fewer
wealthy presidents with the surname Evans.
This made her think if it was Patrick Evans.
But how could this be? The kindergarten Emma was studying at was just an ordinary public bilingual kindergarten.
How could a child of a wealthy family take this kind of kindergarten? Sophia shook her head.
Perhaps it was because he had deeply hurt her in the past that she felt nervous for no reason when she heard that particular
surname.
Perhaps she was just overthinking.
Three days later, Sophia had gone to Evans Group, where she took the interview.
"First of all, congratulations to the seven of you for being able to participate in the third round of interviews at Evans Enterprise
Media. This will also be the final interview. The topic this time is straightforward.I will ask you to answer one by one"
The HR manager, Claire Williams, held a straight face with no emotions.
Just when everyone thought she was about to start asking questions, her expression immediately changed into alarm as she
lowered her head regarding the person who had just walked into the room.
"President” she acknowledged the man respectfully.
"Well..." Patrick replied coldly.
The facial features of the man who was called president were distinct and chiseled. He wore an Italian handmade designer suit
and leather shoes of the same color. His handsome face and stoic figure were all indicative of the elegance and nobility of a high-
ranking person.
"Has it started?" the man offhandedly asked the woman in charge as he strode further into the room.
Claire immediately shook her head and said, "Not yet, President."
Then she quickly stood to the side to allow more room for the man.
Patrick Evans took the resumes of today's interviewees and swept his gaze lazily over them, his fingers casually flipping through
the pages.
When he flipped to the seventh page, his body froze, and his fingers were suspended over the page's edge.
Then, he asked the interviewees casually, "What shortcomings do you guys think you have?"
The interviewees present had delicate makeup and wore well-dressed clothes.
After hearing the president's question, not only did they not show any signs of nervousness, but they were able to answer calmly.
"The workplace is like a battlefield. We can see winning and losing, even the superior and inferiors, every day.I think my biggest
shortcoming is that I do not easily admit defeat.I dare to try anything, and I am always willing to try...
The interviewee's few words both praised the Group's hiring quality and spoke of his awe for the future while also expressing his
own daring spirit.
Just like that, all the other interviewees listed their own shortcomings.
But they eloquently related their weaknesses to their strengths.
Each one of them had potential based on their airtight answers.Sophia stood uneasily at the end of the line as the person next to
her was almost done.
She did not expect that Patrick would personally oversee the interview.
He seemed to change a lot and also became more mature and restrained after those five years.
Perhaps the only thing that hadn't changed was his face that was as fascinating as before.
She had thought that she could be indifferent and looked perfectly calm when she saw him again, but she had overestimated
herself.
Sophia did her best to calm herself down despite her nervousness.
Patrick was the kind of person who would forget about a person's existence the next second.
They hadn't seen each other for five years, and perhaps he had long forgotten her name.
There was really no reason to be nervous.
But at that moment, Patrick's gaze seemed to faintly sweep over her direction, unexpectedly causing her palm to sweat instantly.
It turned out that even though five years had already passed, he still could weaken her with just a glance.
Sophia wanted to escape, but she had nowhere to hide. She knew that if she didn't pass this interview, everything would be for
nothing.
Since she had already come this far, she could not fall back.
"I am very lazy"
After a long time, as the person ranked last, she took a stiff step forward and answered.
Patrick looked up and said, "Oh, besides being lazy, what other shortcomings do you have?"
He seemed to have given her a chance to answer again. He didn't seem to recognize her as she had expected.
Sophia replied, "I am persistent"
Patrick raised an unimpressed brow and asked, "Is that supposed to be a shortcoming?"
The other interviewees looked at each other and snickered amongst themselves. They thought Sophia's answer was kind of self-
flattering.
"Give me an example. What did you do to reflect your persistence?"
Patrick returned the file in his hand to Claire. He seemed to show interest in her answer finally.
Sophia took a deep breath as she stated, "Men!"
Sophia's chest rose and fell at a fast pace as she huffed air.
Hearing Sophia's answer, everyone almost made a sound of surprise.
Even Claire, who was always serious and mean, changed her expression as if she thought Sophia's answer was inappropriate.
"Go on” Patrick goaded Sophia with an interesting glint in his eyes.
Looking fearlessly at Patrick, Sophia gathered her emotions and said, "I once pursued a man for five years and finally ended up
with him”
"What about now?" he asked.
Sophia watched his reaction as she said, "We separated."
Her determination wavered, and she lowered her eyes to the floor. She couldn't act as calmly as Patrick. When she had
mentioned the past, her feelings were complicated.
"So this is your example of persistence."
Patrick only smiled faintly at her, but she couldn't see it because she still had her eyes downcast. He opened his lips but then
changed his mind at the last second and clenched his jaw instead. His sharp features were intimidating to others, making them
feel inferior. His voice was almost cold, and there was a hint of ridicule in his words.
Patrick seemed to be dissatisfied with her answer but chose not to comment on it.He turned to look at the HR personnel to
address her.
"Continue, he instructed Claire expressionlessly. After Patrick's figure disappeared, the other interviewees couldn't help but
snicker at Sophia again.Though this time, they made no effort in trying to hide it.” Sophia thought that she was smart and wanted
to use this kind of unexpected answer to win the attention of the president, but Patrick's reaction seemed to prove she was
wrong; thought the other interviewees rather smugly.
Sophia thought that she messed up the interview and was sure that she didn't pass, so imagine her surprise when she received
a phone call from Claire the following day.
"Miss Hill, please report to Evans Enterprise Media on time at eight o'clock tomorrow morning. In addition, the president asked
me to tell you that not every persistence can represent love, especially the persistence of giving up halfway."
