Silly Bride novel (Winnie and Xavier)

Chapter 344

Despite hearing Greta loud and clear, Winnie refused to believe it.

"Are you telling the truth? Is Christopher really still alive?"

"Yes!" Greta nodded with conviction. "There's no way I would joke about something like this. Due to the secrecy of our identities, the news still can't be revealed to the public. But today, I have been given permission to explain the matter to you."

"That's good." Just the thought of Christopher being alive caused Winnie's eyes to redden.

Throwing Xavier a glance by reflex, she remarked emotionally, "He's still alive, Xavier. He isn't dead!"

"Mmm-hmm." Xavier tightened his grip on her hand. "This is certainly good news."

Despite his indifferent expression, the revelation significantly alleviated the guilt he carried over murdering Christopher.

He inquired further, "How badly is he hurt? Can we visit him?"

"About that..." Greta broke into an awkward smile. "Not at the moment. Firstly, his condition is classified. Secondly, he still needs to rest. Even though he didn't lose his life falling from the second floor, his brain and spine were affected by the impact. All this while, he has been recuperating in bed and has only returned to the country recently. Therefore, it will still be a while before you're allowed to visit him." "In that case, how is his recovery?" Winnie asked anxiously as injuries to the brain and spine were debilitating.

Greta pursed her lips. "You don't have to worry too much about that. Captain Bennett not only has a strong constitution but also a resilient will. Although his legs are still not coordinated, he's working hard on the program the doctor drafted to treat him. Thus, I believe he will make a full recovery soon."

"I'm glad to hear that!" Suddenly, Winnie felt responsible for what had happened. "Back then, I shouldn't have left him behind. If it wasn't for you, he wouldn't have survived."

"There's no need to feel guilty," Greta comforted her. "If you had tried to take him with you at the time, you might have ended up suffering from Harold's schemes. Besides, I was at the scene back then. It seems destiny has decided Captain Bennett's time hasn't come yet."

"Indeed." Winnie broke into a smile. "The Grim Reaper isn't ready to collect yet. Greta, will you be seeing him again? Can you pass him a message for me?"

"What is it?"

"Please convey my apologies and tell him that we're happy to learn he's alive and well."

"Sure, no problem."

"One more thing," Winnie suddenly recalled something. "What about his parents? We met them two days ago and could see that both of them were devastated."

"I'm sure they must feel awful, but the organization has made plans to inform them about the good news, so don't worry about it. Actually, he knows that I'm coming to see both of you and has asked me to pass a message and an item."

"What is it?"

Greta gave Xavier a look before turning her attention back to Winnie. "Captain Bennett said that you asked him a question after he fell off the building. However, he lost consciousness before he could finish his reply. Worried that his incomplete answer would give you the wrong idea, he said that when you asked him who pushed him down, he replied with the name Xavier. Nonetheless, he didn't mean that Xavier was the culprit. Instead, he just wanted to warn you that Xavier was in danger."

"Warn me?" Knitting her brows, Winnie turned toward Xavier subconsciously.

Xavier, too, was curious. "Was I in danger then? Didn't I push him off the building by mistake?"

The frowning Greta shook her head. "I'm afraid not."

While speaking, she took out a ring and placed it in Winnie's hand.

"Captain Bennett asked me to hand this to you. He said that this is the listening device you gave him, and he was wearing it during the incident. Hence, it contains a recording of everything that happened back then."

"Yes!" Staring at the ring, Winnie explained, "Xavier gave it to me first before I passed it to Christopher. Do you have any playback equipment here?"

"I do," Greta answered at once, "but we disabled the ring the moment it came into our possession, as it is a listening device after all. There's no way we can allow it to continue to function. That said, I swear, upon my honor, that we have not tampered with its contents, on top of the fact that it isn't easy to do so in the first place."

Winnie nodded. "I trust you guys."

"All right then. I'll play it back now. You had better prepare yourselves."

Once Greta turned on the equipment, voices could be heard from the recording.

Recognizing when the dialogue occurred, Xavier furrowed his brows. "Can you fast-forward it? This isn't from the day of the incident."

"Sure, please wait a moment." Upon Xavier's request, Greta fast-forwarded the recording to the day they were on the rooftop.

Soon, the incident was relived through the voices in the recording.

They heard how Yulissa injected Xavier with the drug, how she provoked him, and what Xavier said to rebut her.

Nevertheless, Xavier's voice became increasingly muffled.

Thereafter, Yulissa continued with her provocations, while Christopher was heard persuading Xavier not to trust Yulissa and explaining that there was nothing going on between him and Winnie. Throughout the entire exchange, Jacinta didn't say a word until Xavier's illness acted up, causing him to lose control and get into a fight with Christopher.

Amidst the sound of chaotic footsteps, the two of them reached the edge of the rooftop.

However, in the middle of their struggle, Jacinta's voice suddenly rang out.

"Die, Xavier!"

Subsequently, she could be heard dashing toward them, after which Christopher yelled, "Be careful, Xavier!"

From the sounds of it, it seemed he had given Xavier a push back into the rooftop's confines, but he due to inertia-fell off instead.

After that, Jacinta screamed, "Christopher!"

She then bellowed, "Xavier, why don't you just die? Captain Bennett has fallen off the rooftop for the sake of saving you! How many more do you want to kill before you're satisfied? Just die already!" She sounded as if she was cursing at Xavier while pushing him to the edge of the rooftop.

Unexpectedly, Yulissa stopped her. "You old hag, I never knew you were so cruel! Does Winnie know what you have done? Ha, you not only failed to kill Xavier but caused the death of a policeman. Winnie is about to arrive. Do you plan on letting her see all these? Even though I don't know why you want Xavier dead, I think you're letting him off too easily by pushing him off the building when he's not in his right mind. There's no way I'm going to let him die such an easy death!"

Their conversation was quickly followed by the sound of Winnie and Josiah coming upstairs.

Having heard the exchange, Winnie was dumbfounded.

From the chaos in the background and everyone's unique voice, it was evident to her that the recording hadn't been tampered with by Greta and her organization.

If that's the case, the contents of the listening device must be true. Everything I heard is real! It turns out that Xavier didn't push Christopher off the building. Granny was behind everything that happened, and that is the irrefutable truth! Granny was the one who committed all those deeds and subsequently lied to everyone!
