Chapter 3
~Devin’s POV~
An hour had passed since the nurse gave my mate the painkillers. Even though I have been sitting here for the past three weeks this hour seems to be the longest one in history. Ever since I saw my mate’s eyes, I have wanted her to wake up so I can drown in them. I hate that she woke up in pain. I don’t want her to wake up like that again but I also don’t want them to have to sedate her again if she wakes screaming again.
God that was terrifying. Her body twisting from the pain, her mouth opened in a silent scream. And the fact that there was nothing I could do to take that pain from her.
Getting up from my spot next to her bed, I leant over her bed and brushed a finger down her exposed cheek. I needed to get something to eat, but I really didn’t want to leave her in case she woke again. The nurse said the drugs should keep her under for at least another hour or two. Sighing I placed a gentle kiss to her bandaged forehead and left the room looking for the cafeteria.
I pulled out my cell phone as I walked down the hallways of the hospital. Hitting the number two, I speed dialed my Beta, Jack. If my mate was going to wake up soon then she was going to want some things. Clothes to change into, shampoo, soap, toothbrush, a hairbrush, etc... So, asking Jack to pick some things up for her I told him to stop by my place and grab some stuff for me too. It looked like my stay here was going to be extended until my mate was well enough to get out of here.
An hour and a half later, Jack had dropped off the things I asked him for, he left right after that as he got a call over his radio. I didn’t mind though. I was just sitting here waiting for my mate to wake up. This was getting frustrating. I wish I knew her name. It’s getting tiring calling her ‘mate’ all the time. It was even more annoying when the nurses would come in to check on her and call her ‘Jane Doe’.
I almost snapped at one nurse in particular who came in and kept talking about my mate as if she was a specimen in a science experiment. Saying things like, “Jane Doe’s blood pressure seems to be normal.” Or, “The drugs we gave Jane Doe should keep her under for a while.” It didn’t help that she kept trying to flirt with me over my mate’s motionless body. Seriously, couldn’t this tramp see that I was sitting here with the love of my life?
I was brought out of my frustrating thoughts by a movement from the bed. Looking up, I saw my mate’s hand twitch. Jumping up I called for the doctor to come quick as she was waking up. I also switched the light off remembering her reaction from the last time she woke. As I waited for Sue to show up I prayed that this time my mate would wake without pain.
~Girl’s POV~
I was slowly becoming aware of my body again. Everything felt numb. It took a lot of energy just to try to move my fingers, let alone open my eyes.
I was aware of someone shouting for someone to come quickly, and then a pressure upon my hand. I felt something shoot up my arm and into my chest. It wasn’t painful. It was actually quite pleasant. Tingles shot out from my chest to the rest of my body making me aware of everything that was wrong with me. I could feel something heavy on my leg and arm. Also, I could feel something wrapped around my head and chest.
What happened to me? I wondered. Where am I? Why can’t I remember anything?
My eyes shot open on that question and collided with the most wonderful pair of blue eyes. Did I know this person? I opened my mouth to try to ask but nothing came out. I tried again, and again nothing escaped my mouth. I looked up at this person trying to convey with my eyes what I wanted to know.
As if realizing that I couldn’t talk, he reached over next to us and handed me something. I looked down at what was in my lap and I had no idea what it was. I started to cry at this point. I didn’t know what he wanted me to do. I didn’t know anything. I had no clue who I was, where I was, what anything was. I just sobbed harder not knowing what to do.
Just then, a voice sounded in my head.
‘It’s ok. We’ll figure something out.’ I jumped. I didn’t know what this was either.
‘Oh man, you forgot me too?! Well I will enlighten you. I am your wolf. I am apart of you. I am here to protect you when you are in trouble and to help you out in life. I can’t get your memories back for you but I can help you in any way that I can.’
I sent a tentative ‘Thank you’ to my wolf in my head.
‘You’re welcome.’ Came the reply. I jumped again as I was not expecting a reply. I guess we can communicate in my head.
‘Of course we can.’ My wolf stated. ‘We are one and the same. I can read your mind and you can know what I am thinking and feeling. And right now, I need you to trust this man in front of you. He will help keep you safe and protected.’
I nodded my head and looked up at the man in front of me. He was looking at me curiously. I guess I had a weird look on my face when I was talking to my wolf so without knowing what else to do I reached out with my arm that wasn’t bound and hugged him to me. At first he was stiff but then he wrapped his arms gingerly around me and just held me to him.
There was a sound coming from the other side of the room. I jumped and winced in pain. The man ran a soothing hand down my back and the pain receded. I turned to see what startled me and I saw a tall woman in her mid-thirties. She had short-cropped brown hair that framed her face nicely. She was looking down at a something in her hands and seemed distracted.
The man next to me spoke and I was hypnotized by his voice. “Sue, can you come and check on her. She seems to be in some pain and I want to make sure everything is ok.”
Sue looked up from what was in her hands and sent me a small smile. I squeezed the man’s hand that had found its way in mine. I did not know her and I was afraid of what was happening. The man looked down at me, “Its ok. She’s just going to make sure that you are healing properly. Don’t worry, I won’t let her hurt you.” I just nodded and watched warily as she approached me.
“Well,” she stated. I noticed she had a nice voice. It was fluid and flowing. It put me at ease so I relaxed a little more. “Let’s see if we can get some questions answered here first before I start looking at all of your bandages shall we?” I just tilted my head. I didn’t know how she was going to get answers from me when I couldn’t talk or remember anything.
She looked down to the item in my lap and then looked back up to me. “I see Devin here already gave you a pad of paper and pencil.” I looked down, so that’s what these were called, huh, who knew. Well not me, that’s for sure. “So, can you tell me your name?” I just looked at her. I didn’t know what she wanted me to do. She in turn looked at the paper and pencil in my lap like I was supposed to know what they were for. Sighing, she looked back up to me. “Let’s try this again. Just shake your head ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to my questions ok?” I nodded.
“Ok. Do you know who you are?”
I shake my head, ‘no’.
“Do you remember anything about what happened to you?”
Again, I answered, ‘no’.
“Well this is going to be more difficult than I thought.” Sue muttered to herself. She quickly flicked her eyes in the direction of the man next to me, Devin. She looked back at me and tilted her head a little. “Alright, well, let’s see if we can find a better way to communicate. Do you know how to read and write?”
‘No’.
“Do you know how to use sign language?”
‘No’.
“I’m guessing since you don’t know how to read and write you don’t know how to draw either do you?”
‘No’. I didn’t know the purpose to all of these questions but I could feel both her and Devin getting frustrated with me. I cringed from the feelings that were washing over me from the two of them. Devin noticed and tried to sooth me by rubbing patterns onto the back of my hand. I relaxed a little but I was still upset. I didn’t know what they wanted from me and I couldn’t tell them anything. I could only answer ‘yes’ or ‘no’ questions.
‘Not true.’ My wolf stated.
‘What are you talking about?’ I questioned back. ‘How can I let them know what is going on?’
‘I will let him explain the why’s but for now just know that you can talk to him in his mind just like we are doing.’ Came my wolf’s reply.
‘How?’ I wondered.
‘Just concentrate on him. Close your eyes and feel for his mind with yours. Block out everything else and just look for him. When you find him you will be able to talk to him like we are talking now.’
Doing as I was told I closed my eyes and tried to feel for Devin’s mind. Blocking out everything around me and I felt for his presence. I didn’t think I was doing this right and then he was there. It was a comforting presence in my mind. I just wanted to snuggle up to it and stay forever. Unfortunately, I couldn’t do that. I had more important things to accomplish at the moment.
Pushing just a little bit I felt Devin’s mind give a little and I was enveloped in the comfort of his energy. Holding my breath I sent one thought his way, ‘Devin.’
