In my drowsy state, I heard Ethan's gentle voice.

I jolted up from the bed, bumping heads with Ethan.

Ouch! It really hurt! I hadn't experienced such real pain in a year.

Looking at Ethan, he was covering his head with one hand, still trying to hug me with the other, "Honey, did I scare you? It's okay."

I subtly avoided his hand, staring into his eyes, trying to find even a hint of guilt or remorse.

There was none. Nothing but feigned tenderness.

Well, if he hadn't acted so convincingly, how could I have never suspected him?
