Chapter 4
Natalie
When I wake up Sunday morning and go downstairs, the first thing I do is ask Mom when we are going home. Lately we’ve all stayed at Dad’s on the weekend, then go back to Mom’s on Sunday at dinnertime. But I want to go as soon as we can, because I am dying to talk to Timothy about our experiment.
Mom is standing in the kitchen, drinking coffee. Dad is sitting at the table reading the paper. They both look at me kind of funny.
“Home?” Dad says. It seems like his feelings are a little hurt. I didn’t mean to hurt anybody’s feelings.
“I mean back to Mom’s house. I know this is home too,” I tell him, trying to make him feel better.
They look at each other. Dad shrugs. Mom says, “I don’t know, honey, probably later this afternoon. Why?”
“Well,” I tell her, “I really want to play with Timothy today again. Can we go sooner?”
Dad says “Brad already called and said that Jonathan is coming over to play after breakfast.”
I can feel my face growing sad, and my Mom puts her mug down on the counter and comes over and gives me a side squeeze. “Well, I do have some shopping and errands to run. Maybe I could call Timothy’s Mom and ask if I can drop you off over there before lunch, then you could stay until dinner.”
“Yes, please,” I tell her, holding my hands together like I’m praying.
She laughs. “That okay, Ron?”
“Sure,” Dad says. “Why don’t you just take care of your errands and go home, then Gabe and I will head over later this afternoon. I’ll pick up something for dinner on the way.”
“Perfect,” she smiles, and goes over to give him a kiss before she picks up the phone.
Yay! I’m going to get to talk to Timothy soon! I can hardly wait. After everything Angel told me last night, I know that the experiment worked great, and that he and Guardian can apparently talk to each other from all the way over here whenever they want. I just wish that Guardian could tell Timothy. That’s why I want to go over there fast, so he doesn’t have to keep waiting and wondering what happened.
Timothy
Mom tells me that Natalie is going to come over here in a little while. I am very happy to hear that, so I can look at the notes of the experiment.
What’s funny, though, is I’m pretty sure that it worked. I’m not sure exactly how I know, but I just have a feeling that it did. I think that Guardian has been very happy about it, and it seems like I can almost feel his happiness. I can’t understand exactly what I am feeling, but I know it is something different from normal. It’s like a warm glow in my head. It reminds me of the way that I feel when Natalie and I are learning something new together, or when we are excited or cheerful. But I don’t ordinarily feel that way just on my own. Usually when I am alone I am just quiet and calm. This feels like happiness is happening to me even without me doing anything at all to cause it. That can’t be normal.
I know Angel has said that sometimes regular humans can sense their guardians, and I wonder if that is what is happening. I have all sorts of questions about this, and things I want to try. It would be amazing if Guardian and I could figure out a way to talk to each other. I know it wouldn’t be as easy as Natalie and Angel, but I think there might be something we could do.
I think in my head to Guardian, “Guardian, please tell Angel that I’m pretty sure I already know that the experiment worked. I can’t wait to talk to you and Angel and Natalie about everything.”
I listen, hoping to hear something. I don’t, of course. But I keep getting that feeling of happiness nearby. It has to be Guardian.
Jonathan’s
While my beloved slept last night, I contemplated the peculiar happenings yesterday between the Seer’s Guardian and that of my dearest boy’s nemesis, Timothy. Every Guardian in the region heard the results of their “experiment”. It was astounding to hear their staggering communication. It was felt almost physically by each Guardian in the vicinity. Never to my knowledge had our kind generated that level of power, or achieved communication at such a distance. The other Guardians observed passively, mystified but not perturbed by the incident. It had nothing to do with them, or with their humans. It was simply one of many fascinating developments stemming from the presence of a Seer in our world. No other Guardians would dream of trying to replicate the experience.
I, however, feel more directly impacted by the situation, due to the focus that the Seer and her friend have had on my own beloved. They wish their Guardians to intervene, to cause my darling boy to alter his remarkable behavior. They cannot do so, naturally. They have no power over him, over me.
This new ability, however, to project such energy that their communication seems boundless, is compelling. What might it mean? Can it affect my Guarded? I must contemplate this phenomenon, consider its ramifications, imagine its uses.
Natalie
As soon as I get to Timothy’s house we run straight up to his room.
“Angel says that you already know it worked!” I tell him. “How can you tell?” I am very excited, and I know that Timothy is too.
“I think I am feeling Guardian being happy. Angel, is that what I have been feeling?”
Angel looks so happy too. He has a big smile on his face and I think he’s glowing brighter than usual. He has looked like this since last night when he first started yelling at Guardian. Angel says, “Tell Timothy that yes, I believe that he has been sensing the joy that Guardian feels about the success of our experiment.”
Timothy listens to me tell him what Angel said, then asks, “Is this what you meant when you said that sometimes regular humans can sort of hear the messages that their guardians are sending?”
Angel says “Not exactly. I think this is something out of the ordinary. Guardian has told me that of course he has whispered words to Timothy about the success of the experiment. However, Guardian believes that even when he isn’t actively trying to whisper, his delight in the situation is still being conveyed to Timothy.”
Angel waits for a minute so I can tell all of this to Timothy, then he keeps going. “This situation is unusual on several levels. Guardian’s delight is very powerful, as a result of the experiment that we performed last night. We were able to “yell” at each other by using more power in our communication than normal. This expanded the distance at which we could communicate, thus confirming the truth of the hypothesis for the experiment.”
Timothy is fascinated. “Can I have the notebook?” I give it to him with a pencil since I know he’ll want to write his own notes. I wait while he reads everything I wrote last night. “Ok,” he says, “I believe we can say the experiment was a success. We proved that Angel and Guardian can talk to each other further away than normal by yelling at each other.”
Angel nods, listening closely to Timothy.
Timothy continues, “But I think that more than that happened. Guardian’s feelings are strong enough for me to feel now. I’ve never felt that before. I think maybe that is because of the extra power they used to yell, right Angel?”
Angel says, “Yes, Timothy, I believe you are correct. It seems that your experiment has uncovered additional information that we did not anticipate. We have done more than increase the distance at which we can communicate. In order to “yell”, we both used a far greater amount of energy than normal. The use of the extra energy generated a power which had an intense impact on us. This seems to have enhanced not just our communication, but other aspects of our beings. Guardian’s elation is so powerful today that Timothy can actually feel it. This is very unusual for a Guardian. And I, myself, feel somehow enhanced by the experience.”
He pauses a couple of times during this so I can tell Timothy the words. I think Angel wants to make sure that I repeat it all the right way, because he thinks this is all very important for Timothy to understand. After I finish telling Timothy everything Angel said, I add, “I actually do think Angel seems different since the experiment. It’s, like, he’s brighter or something.”
“What do you mean?” Timothy asks.
“I don’t know how to explain it,” I say, looking at Angel to see if I can figure out what is different. “He looks like he is glowing brighter, and is maybe, I don’t know, more kind of solid?”
“Solid?” Timothy asks. He is very interested in this. “Can you touch him now?”
I’m suddenly very excited by that thrilling idea, but when I reach my hand out to touch Angel, of course I can’t. “No,” I tell him sadly, “that’s the same as always. I can’t touch him.” Angel looks sad too. And now, although I can always tell how Angel is feeling, it feels stronger.
“Huh,” I say. “I think I can feel Angel’s feelings more now too. He’s sad that I can’t touch him.”
Timothy taps the pencil on his mouth, thinking hard, then writes everything down in the notebook. While he’s doing that, I can tell that Angel is listening to Guardian.
“Timothy, Guardian wants you to know that it is your intelligence that has led us to this new and profound revelation. He believes, as do I, that something has changed for all of us. Guardian and I have actually been altered by this discovery. It is very rare for a Guardian to experience fundamental change, and this is more monumental than you could possibly know. However, Guardian wishes to thank you for this development. As do I. You have the profound gratitude of each of us, for leading the way to these new discoveries.”
Angel looks like he is about to cry as he tells me this, not from being sad, but from being emotional about the changes that he and Guardian are experiencing. I feel the emotions flowing over me, through me.
When I finish telling Timothy all of this, he looks emotional too. “I’m glad we are all figuring this out together,” he says. I can’t resist leaning over and giving him a hug, just because I feel so close to him. He doesn’t normally like to be touched, but he likes it today, and he even hugs me back for just a second. All of us are filled with love for each other, and excitement at everything we are learning.
I add, “I didn’t realize until now how important our experiment was, Timothy. We were only trying to figure out how far guardians can talk to each other, but it looks like we learned a lot more. I didn’t have any idea that our experiment could actually change Angel and Guardian.”
Timothy’s
The Seer and my beloved are thrilled with the success of their experiment, and intrigued by the knowledge that it has wrought changes in their Guardians. However, they cannot appreciate the magnitude of this stupendous development. This goes beyond the changes that Angel has undergone by Guarding a Seer, and far beyond my own alterations as Timothy has grown to understand my existence.
I am different. Tangibly, irrevocably different. I have never felt such emotions in all my lifetimes of Guarding. I have never felt such a connection to the world. And I have never before felt so attached to my Guarded. Yes, we share a soul, but this is something more.
Somehow, the power that Angel and I called upon by pushing energy into our words last night filled us each with an unprecedented brilliance. It is as though the matter of which we are comprised has increased in quantity or density. Of course there is no physical alteration, as our bodies can never interact with the type of matter of which the world is made. We are of different particles, unknown to the scientists of this earth. But I feel somehow more firmly fixed in place, more joined with Timothy. It appears that he senses it as well, and has actually been able to identify the euphoria that has been washing through me since last night’s experiment.
Of course, his mind has turned to an effort to find ways to investigate this new phenomenon. He peruses the notes that had been written by Natalie last night. We await his conclusions.
“Ok,” he says after a few minutes. “I think there are two main things that we have learned, and that I want to know more about.” We all listen carefully, ready to assist in any way required. “First, we learned that Angel and Guardian can use extra power to make themselves louder, and hear each other further away. I want to know more about the power, and whether they can control it, and how far it can reach.”
Angel and I are in total agreement. Last night’s discovery was the most consequential in our existence, and we have already begun contemplating ways to explore it further. For instance, it was clear that every other Guardian nearby was impacted by the amount of power we both used to communicate. We both felt somewhat abashed at having disrupted the entire region, and wished to find a way to modulate the power we were using to increase our volume. After the children were both asleep, we continued experimenting with our long-distance communication. We have results to report, but will wait for Timothy to direct us. He is the de facto leader of our little scientific team.
Timothy continues. “Second, we learned that the power they used also made them more… I guess… powerful. Like, Angel is brighter and I can feel Guardian’s happiness. I want to understand why, and whether it can change the way that they communicate with us. We can do some experiments to find out if I can feel more of Guardian’s feelings, and maybe even start to hear what he is saying.”
I am awash in admiration for my beloved, for his inquisitive nature, his focus, his intellect. The concept of being able to communicate with him is overwhelming. There is nothing I could possibly want more than this.
Natalie is also excited, especially to start an effort to enhance my ability to communicate directly with Timothy. “Oh, Timothy, I want that so much too! I really want you to be able to hear Guardian!” Angel starts to caution her, but she cuts him off. “I know. Angel is going to say that you’ll never be able to hear Guardian as much as I can hear Angel, but I just know that you can figure something out. They never thought they could talk to each other, and especially not far away, and that was just yesterday. Things have already changed a lot.”
The child is correct, of course. The changes that have occurred in just the past day are unprecedented, and I am willing to believe that more can take place.
“Oh, my darling,” I whisper to my beloved, “how I long for you to be able to hear my words directly. If there is any possibility of this happening, I believe that you are the person who can find the way.”
Angel transmits my words to Natalie, who beams happily as she relays them to Timothy.
“Ok,” Timothy says. “Let’s start.”
