Chapter 173 -
When Jeremiah saw Sebastian leave the room, he quickly walked over and said, "I've arranged everything that you asked me to, Sebastian. I guarantee that no one will take any pictures or videos. That being said, even though aunt Selena is a public figure, there's no need to be so careful, is there? There are no laws forbidding anyone from joining engagement parties." "Aunt Selena put in a lot of effort to be able to reach this far. That's why we have to be careful. We can't get her into any trouble," Sebastian explained.
Jeremiah nodded in agreement. "That's true. We're not afraid of anyone coming at us head-on, but we have to be careful of someone stabbing us from the back. Right, I've arranged for people in the crowd. Once Asher is here, I'll have them humiliate him in public. That bastard... Even after he was kicked out of the Crawfords, he's still as arrogant as always. I'll have him under my heel one day and give his head a good stomp."
"Remember, Jeremiah. We shouldn't simply have our eyes on Alexandrius. We should set our eyes further out and plan for the future. If everything goes according to plan, our influence will one day accompany the entire province, or even the entire Northeast. Everything will be in our control. As men, our goal is the world... not this little provincial capital. As for your plan, forget about it. We have so many friends and family present today. We can't show them that we're being petty. Once the engagement is over, we can deal with him at night somewhere else." Sebastian had always been Jeremiah's pillar. He nodded and said, "Sure. We'll go with your plan." Sebastian then gave Jeremiah's shoulder a pat and said with a smile, "Don't worry. I'll avenge you, but not today. Right, how many people came today? Today is also Seth and Phoebe's engagement party, some of them should've gone over."
Jeremiah then replied with a laugh, "You're giving them too much credit. Who are they when compared to you? I heard that their party is quite dull. No one went. Most of the upper class came to our household."
"I never thought that everyone would show us so much respect. Heh." Sebastian let out a prideful grin when he heard that.
The ceremony had yet to begin as the Schmidts had not arrived yet. The guests were all in their own little groups, while some of them were strolling in the estate. While there were not a lot of them, they would separate into their own little groups as there were always those who were much closer than others despite being from the same strata of society.
As the heir to the Crawfords, Huxley had come to Sebastian and Rose's engagement party on behalf of the Crawfords. As for the Harrisons, Solomon had arranged for someone else to attend. After Asher had been exiled, Huxley's reputation was slowly increasing like the rising sun.
Once he had arrived at the Macquoid's residence, many of the guests greeted him. Huxley also enjoyed that kind of feeling. Just as he was speaking with them, Huxley saw Layla not far away. Her beauty and elegance made her especially eye-catching.
After a moment, Huxley then approached her with a smile on his face. "You didn't go to the Harrisons, cousin?"
Layla already knew that Asher had been falsely accused. When she saw Huxley, she could feel a flame rising in her heart. However, she simply responded to him coolly out of courtesy, "No. I don't know Seth that well."
Huxley smirked and said, "That's true. Not to mention that Phoebe got engaged with Seth right after she broke off her engagement with Asher. She didn't show any consideration to him at all. But thinking back to what Asher did, I don't feel any pity for him."
Layla looked at Huxley coldly, and she almost let it all out on him. She had never seen someone as shameless as Huxley. She simply turned around and left with a snort.
Huxley narrowed his eyes as he gritted his teeth.
"Who made you so angry, Layla? Your face is all red," Annette could not help but ask when she saw Layla walking in her direction huffing and puffing.
"Nothing." Layla tried to keep her anger under control. She then asked, "Have you seen Asher anywhere?"
"Asher?" Annette and Maggie exchanged a glance before both of them shook their heads. Annette hesitated for a few seconds before saying, "Layla, why are you looking for him? Everyone has already heard about what happened between you two last time. I don't think he'll be coming today."
Layla snorted. "He better not. I'll kill him if I see him."
When Annette heard that, she then guessed that the rumor about Asher drugging her must be true. Otherwise, Layla would not be so angry.
Maggie then said, "Maybe Asher has gone to Seth and Phoebe's engagement party? But that's just so shameful since Phoebe did sort of cheat on him."
"Cheat?" Layla was taken aback.
Annette quickly gave Maggie a glance and said, "Stop it, Maggie."
Maggie pursed her lips and said, "I'm just telling it like it is. She hadn't broken off the
engagement with Asher in the first place when she dated Seth. I saw it myself. Asher knew about
it too, but it didn't seem like he cared. Then, I think I understand why. Phoebe never had a place
in Asher's heart, that's why he didn't care who she's with."
At the same time, the Schmidts' convoy slowly drove toward the residence. In one of the Mercedes, a middle-aged woman held Rose's hand and said, "After today, you'll be partially married into the Macquoids. I'm both happy for you and sad to see you leave." The woman's eyes were filled with reluctance.
Rose then said, "Mom... I'm still your daughter no matter what happens."
"Oh, Rose. After you've moved into the Macquoid's residence, you can't speak and do anything so nonchalantly anymore. No matter how upset you are, there are times that you simply have to feign ignorance, understand?" The woman could not smile no matter what despite knowing that this was supposed to be a happy day for her daughter. Her reluctance far outweighed the joy she had.
Rose nodded and then turned to look outside the car, and the smile on her face slowly disappeared.
It would not be long before the convoy reached the residence. It was at this time when a familiar figure entered Rose's vision. It was Asher, slowly walking toward the Macquoids.
He came?
Rose's quiet heart suddenly skipped a beat. The convoy had already driven past Asher. Suddenly, Rose's mobile vibrated. He took it out and saw that it was a text from Asher.
She was worried that the woman would see it. As such, she turned away subconsciously and read the text.
Text?
Rose frowned before hesitating and quickly shooting back a reply.
"We're here, Rose. Let's go."
When Rose heard what the woman said, she then put her mobile back into her purse and got out
of the car.
As the Schmidts arrived, the atmosphere in the Macquoids reached its climax. There was no doubt that Rose would be the center of attention today.
Her wavy hair was naturally combed to the right, revealing her left ear that was wearing a fashionable earring which was reflecting the sunlight. Even without makeup, her beauty was not tarnished, and her facial features were very pronounced. Her lips were like rose hips, fleshy and vivid.
She was wearing a red chiffon dress, and the hemline of her dress fluttered open in a graceful arc. She wore a pair of high heels on her feet, making her already gorgeous figure even taller. Many men looked at Rose with adoration, but when they remembered that today was the engagement party between Sebastian and Rose, they hid that adoration deep within their hearts. Rose was indeed a very attractive woman. However, only Asher had pursued her all these years. It was not because the men did not want to. They did not dare to.
"You're so pretty today, Rose. One look at you and all the men won't be interested in other women ever again," Jeremiah praised her with a chuckle.
Rose was quite confident with her own appearance. When she heard that, she replied with a soft smile, "How sweet of you."
"Rose." At this time, Selena walked toward her with a smile. She then saw a strand of her hair that was out of place, so she then tucked it back in place. She gave Rose a careful look and praised her, "You and Sebastian are a match made in heaven."
"You're too kind, aunt Selena. You're the most beautiful woman in Alexandrius," Rose replied. Selena smirked, "And you're teasing me now? There's still some time before the ceremony starts. Let's rest in the living room for a while."
Rose nodded. Just as she was heading toward the living room, Jeremiah suddenly said, "Sebastian, Asher's here."
As soon as he said that, Sebastian and the others looked in the gate's direction and saw Asher walking toward them.
