Seconds to Midnight: A Maiden of Midnight Prequel

Chapter Seth- Day Thirty

Seth- Day Thirty

Folding my blanket over my bed, I slid under the covers, the curtains drawn firmly over my window as dawn began to creep over Ordeallan. The muscles in my body ached as I settled in, pulling my blanket up to my chin, my eyelids as heavy as lead. I was eager to get to sleep, but my mind was racing. Tonight had been long, full of lessons at the Academy.

There had been my physical exams, where they tested my skills with various weapons, how fast and far I could run, climb or dodge, before pitting us against each other in One-vs-One fights.

Unfortunately for me, Bramfield had been my fighting partner.

He had beaten me in every one of our fights, mocking me the entire way. My scores hadn’t been lacking in any way, he was just faster and bigger than me. Now that he knew it for certain, he mocked me at every moment, including following me around the halls and shouting our fight scores at the top of his lungs for everyone to hear.

Still, I passed the class, by some small miracle. Tomorrow, I would ask Merry to train me so I could beat Bramfield the next time we were paired against each other.

Mira hadn’t been able to have her running tested, but they tested how fast she could fly instead.

I couldn’t attend the Academy lessons tomorrow night. There were chores to do around the house, and Lucy needed someone to watch her while Karla went out to the markets to try and find some extra food for us to stock up on.

But once all of that was done, Merry would train me. If I worked consistently, I might be able to beat Bramfield once and for all.

Heaven above, I really hoped I could rub my life in his face one night…
