Chapter Chapter Nineteen
“I know you think you’re broken because you can’t have children, but I know that you’re not and I love you with all of my heart...”
“When we arrive, go straight into the pack house and grab anything you need. Katie told me she packed most of it up but she wanted to make sure she grabbed everything. I sent your brothers in one of the first waves of the evacuation, but they might be a little pissy given the shifts--”
“Shifts?”
“It seems like the second attack caused something to stir in Charles as well and he started the first signs of shifting before Katie knocked him out.”
“She did what?” I ask in shock.
“Katie did the smart thing. She stopped her mate’s twin from shifting before he could hurt any of the good guys accidentally. A newly shifted werewolf doesn’t have much control and he couldn’t have hurt someone growling orders to the others thinking they were a threat so she did what was necessary.”
“How do you--”
“Chase tried to contact you via the mind link. You were asleep, but I could feel him pushing at your mind so I contacted him independently.”
“They’re all okay though.”
“For now,” Tyson sighs, running his hand through his hair. “A war is brewing and I know what that will mean...”
“Casualties.”
“More of them, yes.”
“How long will we be in Northbrooke?”
“Two hours tops before we return back to the Castle.”
“Katie had to stay behind and finalize the evacuation. Your brother was not very happy about that of course, but I put him in charge of my mother so he’ll have his hands full and won’t have too much time to worry.”
“Good. Is Charles alright though?”
“He’ll be taken to a safe room at the castle for him to wake up in, but so far his shift has been amenable.”
“Okay.”
“As a reminder, once we are back at the castle we will need to follow the formal greetings to one another, but until then we are free to speak like normal people,” Tyson says formally.
I notice his stiff posture, his tight grip on the steering wheel, and his brow set.
“What else is wrong, Tyson?”
“Nothing.”
“Something is most definitely wrong.”
“It’s nothing.”
“Tys--”
“You’ve been marked. I am finding it much harder to control my wolf around you.” He snaps, sucking in air quickly, slowly breathing out as he struggles to keep his eyes on the road.
“Oh.”
“Yes. So if we could talk about the pack and not myself, that would be very helpful.”
“Understood.”
The trip to Northbrooke was just as quick as Tyson had said. Two hours and we were back on the road. I was quick to grab the last of my belongings at the house and grab some things from my old house that I knew the boys would forget. I grabbed my dad’s favorite old sweatshirt and tossed it in the backseat of the car. While I had been searching the “Gardenia Room” at the pack house, I came across Tyson’s journals sitting forlornly on the ground. I winced as I remember how Tyson had come to find me sobbing as I realized that Tyson knew about what had happened to me what seemed like so long ago.
I packed them still. Knowing that at some point I might be strong enough to read them or at some point be weak enough to be broke by them.
After grabbing the last few things from the pack house, Tyson, Katie, Babe, and I piled back into the SUV and began our return to our new home. Babe drove, Tyson exhausted from his drive back to Northbrooke and Katie acted as navigator while Tyson and I sat on the far edges of the back seat looking out the windows and avoiding Babe and Katie’s curious glances at the new mark on my neck that I couldn’t hide in my v-neck t-shirt no matter how I tried.
I stared at the town’s sign as we left Northbrooke for what might be the last time with a sad smile. I loved Northbrooke, but our departure meant the safety of our people would be more secure and that the normal townspeople would escape from the abnormality of a werewolf war unscathed.
“Are you ready to return to the castle, Cassie?” Katie asks softly.
“I guess so, it looks like there’s a lot to be done to get ready for a potential war.”
Babe grunts lowly, his unspoken anger rolling off him in waves. He was as angry at the deaths as Tyson was, but nothing could tame the anger of the beasts right now.
Apparently the bodies of the deceased had been burned per their traditions and the ashes collected by their families for their individual traditions.
“Yakunda is back. It means the whole world will be at war.” Babe finally growls out. Katie flinches at the name, but doesn’t say a word.
The rest of the car ride is filled with silence and the occasional directions from Katie as we head into an unknown future.
I don’t remember falling asleep and I’m not exactly sure where I am once I wake up. I sit up, gray satin sheets wrapping around my naked body as I look around a completely gray and white room. I pull the silky sheet from the bed and wrap it around me, covering my nakedness as I try and figure out where I am. I climb out of the massive, messy bed and step down onto plush carpet, the texture causing my toes to curl at the feeling. My hair is a mess, the curly strands hitting my naked back and shoulders as I stand.
Sketches of a beautiful woman hang around the room, larger than life as I try and figure out where I am at. In the momentary silence I take a moment to look at the sketches of the woman hanging on the walls and after a moment I realize it’s me. I smile coyly in some of them, other I stick my tongue out flirtatiously, in others still I notice that I’ve been sketched laying down in bed without anything on.
I hear the turn of a doorknob and I turn and see Tyson coming in, a towel covering his lower half.
“Good Morning my Queen, I see you’re finally awake after last night’s escapades...” he teases, eyeing me up and down. Surprisingly I’m unfazed at the sexual look coating his face. He walks closer to me, a sly grin on his face, and from the corner of my eye, I watch as his towel slowly falls down and hits the floor.
“Ready to go again...?”
I wake up with a gasp, my face and entire body ablaze with heat. I look around and find myself still in the SUV with Babe and Katie sitting in silence in the front seat. A weight rests on my stomach and I see it’s Tyson causing the trails of fire up and down my body. He’s still passed out, asleep with his head on my lap, his hands holding on to me tightly as his eyes move under the lids, his mouth moving slightly as though mouthing the words of his dream.
Babe catches my eye in the rear-view mirror.
“Have a good dream, Your Majesty?” Babe smirks.
“What, I didn’t--”
“We can smell you, Cassie.” Katie mutters, embarrassment filling her tone.
“Smell me?” I ask confused.
“Your...”
“Need.” Babe finishes with a cough.
I blush deeper as I try and find something to distract me from my embarrassment.
“We’re almost at the castle, but we will need you to close the barrier,” Babe says after a long and more than awkward pause.
“Of course,” I say immediately before realizing, “How?”
“Instruct the barrier.” Tyson murmurs. I freeze and look down and see Tyson with his eyes still closed. He sits up, yawning and stretching.
“Oh-okay.” I nod, whispering my response as I beg for Tyson to get off of me without commenting on my “smell” like his sister and Beta had.
Babe pulls to a stop and we both hop out of the car, running as far as we can from another. I go to the barrier and press my hand up against it, unafraid now that I’m officially marked as Queen.
“I am going to run the borders. Once you close the barrier, they can drive you to the castle while I check on other matters.” Tyson growls. Tyson goes behind the tree he had cut my hand on and changes, throwing his clothes to the ground for me as he shifts, the popping and cracking of bones giving it away.
“Sure.”
His dark brown wolf comes over to me and nudges my free hand gently and I pet his head. His eyes are still hazel and he nuzzles into me. He sniffs and then suddenly freezes as do I.
I stare at him as I watch his eyes flicker from hazel to black before running off through the barrier without another word or thought. I flinch at the implication before returning to the task at hand.
“Hi Cassandra,” I mumble awkwardly. “Let in this last vehicle and then lock down the barriers for now.”
Nothing happens to the barrier, but a warmth fills my left hand and the emblem tattoo from the door is warm. I nod at Babe to drive through and he does as I follow in by foot. I hop back in the vehicle so Babe can drive us back to the castle.
“Where did Tyson go?” Katie asks.
“To check the borders.” I repeat his words.
Babe chuckles.
“What?”
“I think you mean to go take a cold shower.” He chortles before continuing to drive to the castle, my face beet red and Katie’s a mixture of disgust and displeasure.
“No, move the families with infants closer to the hospital and stores. Older families should live closer to the schools.” I direct.
After returning to the castle, I invited Katie up into my wing of the castle so we could review family placements, one of my many jobs as the new and official Queen.
“Alright, Tyson will want to place protectors and warriors at each entrance so we should leave a building for them to rest in between their watches.”
“Why don’t they go home?”
“They usually stay in the barracks for a week at a time before returning to their families for two weeks.” Katie explains. I nod and lean back in the desk chair I am perched in while I wait for Tyson to call me for dinner.
“You can call him you know?” Katie mumbles.
“What?”
“You can check in on him via the mind link now.”
“Who?”
“Whoever is causing that big wrinkle in your brow.” She points at my forehead, causing me to furrow it further.
“He’s busy with checking the borders--”
“So it is my brother on your mind,” Katie hums.
I shoot her a glare.
She shrugs and I catch sight of a dark mark on her shoulder, “it seems it’s my brother on your neck.” I respond snippily. Katie’s hand automatically shoots up to her neck and she blushes as she hides the hickey coloring her neck.
“Queen Luna--”
“You’re not in trouble, Katie. Please don’t bring up your brother again though.” I sigh, frustrated with my rudeness to her.
“Of course.”
“I think I’m gonna take a nap, why don’t you go take a break as well. These logistics reports will be the death of us if we’re not careful.”
“Of course. I’ll send the updates so far to Babe so he can get people in their permanent housing and then talk to you after dinner.”
Katie turns and walks to the door.
“Cassie?”
“Yes?”
“Thanks for letting me up into the tower. It’s been a while since I was back here.” Katie murmurs, looking around the bright room.
I smile softly as I realize that the last time anyone had ever been up here had been with Katie’s mother, the former Queen.
“Sure...”
“I’ll see you later.”
Katie leaves and I remove myself from the chair and throw myself on the open bed where I stare at the beautiful tapestry cover above.
I sigh, discontent in my current feelings before giving in.
"Tyson?" I reach out, trying to see how the whole mind link thing worked. It felt strange to try and talk to someone in my own head, but trying wouldn’t hurt. It felt like I was extending a cord from my brain as I tried to reach out to my so-called ‘soul mate.’
"Tyson?" I try again. The cord seems to hang limply in my mind before suddenly it stretches and glows and I feel someone on the other end.
"Cassie? Is everything alright?" Tyson’s warm voice fills my mind and I shudder at the new feeling.
Before I could only feel bits and pieces of him through the link, but now that we’re fully connected I felt everything about him. I could feel his pain, his warmth, his heart, his feelings for me and they overwhelmed me for a moment.
"Cassie?"
"I’m fine, I just wanted to check in and see how the border was," I lie, closing my eyes at the thought of my real reason for calling him.
"Everything was how we left it. I have a few notes for Beta Wilbur to address but we should be in good shape in a few days for an attack."
"Okay."
"Was there something else?"
"Oh no, I was just curious how it went."
"I’m sorry for running off earlier. I was just... overwhelmed." Tyson admits.
"I understand."
A feeling of warmth runs through the bond before Tyson responds with a chuckle, ”Yet I know you couldn’t possibly understand. Anyways, shall I collect you for dinner with the pack at the bottom of the stairs around 7?"
"That’s fine. I’ll see you then."
"Cassie... if you need to talk about something else, I’m always here for you," Tyson’s words are soft and sincere and I can feel the warmth in his chest as he tells me that.
And for once, I start to believe him...
A/N: I had some free time today and was inspired by the chapter I wrote yesterday to keep writing so here is chapter 19. As much as I love writing this story, I have a bunch of things going on this next week so my next update won’t be until this coming weekend. I hope this will tide you over until then!
