Chapter Chapter Fourteen
“What do you mean he’s changed? ” I demand. Tyson won’t let me in brother’s room to check on him and three armed guards had entered the room shortly before I had attempted to enter. Babe was pacing the hallway and Tyson was standing in front of the door to Chase’s room while Charles was passed out in the living room down the hallway. He had a few minor scratches, but the stress of his brother being hurt caused too much adrenaline to rush his body and he was wiped.
“He’s changed, Cass. You can’t--”
“Humans with questionable family backgrounds, whenever they see their mate in danger, known or unknown mates even, they tend to react one of two ways: dashing in front of the danger and getting killed--” Babe starts.
“WHAT?!” I screech, clawing at Tyson to get past him.
“Or they change like Chase did.”
“What do you mean change?” Tyson stops my hands from clawing at him and flips me around so that my arms are by my side while Babe tries to calm me down. Large currents of energy were running down my body at the close proximity of Tyson. Gone were the sparks, but instead rivers of fire ran through my veins.
“He basically--”
“He shifted,” Tyson murmurs in my ear. “He’s one of us now.”
My heart stopped and the shock made my body go limp. I was still securely in Tyson’s arms, but he loosened his grip, allowing me to turn back to him.
“How is that possible?”
“Typically they have the genes for shifting. It typically is a dominant gene, but after several generations it can fade into the background.”
“So someone in my family was a werewolf?” I say slowly, staring at Tyson’s shirt and trying to understand what was happening.
“Probably.”
“Chase-- he’s gone through the change much older than most, he’s gonna be temperamental for a while. He’s got a lot to adjust through and with his mate being scared and--”
“Let me see him.”
“He could hurt you.”
I growl at Tyson’s words, “I’m fairly certain at one point or another I took down 7 grown ass werewolves and you Mr. Alpha King. I think I can handle one newly shifted werewolf who is my brother and is scared and is probably wondering what the hell is going on, ESPECIALLY since he had no idea Katie was his mate when they were attacked.”
“Cassie-”
“Let. Me. Through.”
“This is for your protection.”
“You never answered my question earlier.” I whisper, attempting to knock him off his guard.
“What do you mean?”
“Could you leave all of this? Being a werewolf if it meant having me?”
He pauses and I take the moment to push him away and run into my brother’s room, throwing the door open. Chase was sitting on his bed growling at the guards who wouldn’t let him leave.
“I need to check on that girl.” he snaps, staring at the men with a wild look in his eyes.
"Chase, calm down."
Chase looks at me in shock and unwittingly shows his neck to me.
“Cassie, what’s going on? What’s happened?” Chase asks as I walk over to him. Tingles run up and down my body and I know Tyson is probably glaring at me as I walk over to my brother.
The guards stare at him cautiously, each acknowledging me with the word, “Luna,” before placing their full attention on my brother.
“Chase, do you remember what happened?”
“I remember a wolf running at Charles and I while we were kicking the ball around in the front yard. At first, I thought it was a pack member coming to play with the ball, kind of like Aggie used to--”
“Aggie?” Tyson asks.
“Our family dog.” I respond, not looking to him as I answer.
Tyson snorts at the implication, but Chase continues.
“But we could tell it wasn’t all that friendly. It was growling and practically frothing at the mouth. That’s when it happened.”
I nod at him, telling him to continue.
“That girl, Tyson’s sister ran up and jumped in front of it. Like as a human! And she knocked it to the side and she shifted. I don’t know what happened next, all I know was that I heard her cry out. She yelped and howled and I just remember getting really hot and everything hurting before I passed out and woke up here. What about her, is she okay?”
“She’s okay.” Tyson confirms when I don’t know what to say.
“What happened though?”
“Chase. I’ve told you about mates before?”
“Yeah, it’s the werewolf thing that keeps you stuck here with Tyson.” Chase nods at me.
I sigh and nod, “Yes. And it seems that the girl who jumped in front of you is your mate. And when you saw that she was in danger, you shifted.”
“Shifted?” Chase asks, not understanding.
“Yes. Into a werewolf.” I say slowly. Chase chuckles at me, shaking his head.
“Yeah, like no way.”
“Uh, yes way.” I respond.
He looks at my face and stops his laughter, realizing I’m serious. “You shifted to protect her, but I don’t think your body could handle it so you passed out while she was fighting the--”
“Rogue.” Tyson supplies.
“The rogue.”
“Cass, that’s impossible--”
“It’s not,” enters another voice. A tired looking Charles enters the room and looks at his brother. “I watched it happen.”
“Really? But-But I can’t, I just--” Chase begins to hyperventilate, his body shaking as he looks around frantically. His eyes start to flicker from his normal blue color and waver black as he looks around.
“Chase. You need to calm down,” I start. Charles tries to enter the room and near his brother, but I’m finally realizing what Tyson meant earlier about Chase’s temperament.
“Charles, leave the room.”
“No! He’s my brother!”
“And I’m your sister and I am ORDERING you to leave before you get hurt.”
“What about you?” He yells. I nod at one of the guards and he bows his head in understanding while pushing Charles out of the room.
“Cass, it’s time to go.”
“He wouldn’t hurt me.”
“Yes, he would.” Tyson argues.
I look at him and stare into his hazel eyes, “You told me no one could hurt their Luna. Chase will be a pack member now, right? I am his Luna and it is my responsibility to make sure my pack members are safe. He won’t hurt me. He can’t. Now if you suggest that I leave one more time, I will hurt you.” I snap.
Tyson huffs, but I have a feeling of pride rolling down my body that I realize is most likely coming from him.
“I’m the pack’s Luna. I am not your mate.” I say softly, but Tyson doesn’t say a word in response.
After Chase had finally calmed down, he agreed to take a nap only if I agreed to go check on the “girl who had saved him.”
“I don’t even know her name and she saved my life. Cass, please, I need to know she’s okay. There’s this voice in my head demanding to make sure she’s alright.” He yelled at me.
“Her name is Katie. And I think that voice probably has something to do with the mate bond.” I tell him.
He stares at me, “Katie.” he says softly.
“I will go and check on her as long as you promise to stay here and stay calm. Try to take a nap. Do you really want the first time you see her after the fight for her to be worrying about you instead of her own wounds?”
Chase rolls his eyes, “Yes, Mom.” He jokes.
I freeze, internally wincing at the joke, but I go over to him and pull his blankets up. I sit on the side of the bed and stare at his scratched face.
“You and your brother are the most important things in the world to me. Never forget it.” I whisper in his ear as I give him a tight hug.
“And you’re the best sister in the world. Don’t you forget that.”
“Never.”
Tyson instructed Babe to keep an eye on Chase and Charles while he took me to the pack hospital to check on his sister.
“She’ll go into heat soon, won’t she?” I ask, thinking about Katie and Chase’s new mate ship.
“I’m not sure. It might be different since he just shifted. But yes, I would expect that to happen sometime in the future. The primo aspect happened after he shifted when he tried to protect her. His body failing due to the pain is not unheard of, but it’s been a while since we’ve had such a unique case in the pack.”
“I can’t believe my brother is a werewolf now.” I sigh, “When did my life turn into a bad romance novel?” I ask.
Tyson remains silent as we walk into the hospital. Pack members nod at us respectively as we enter the lobby. A nurse directs us to the ward Katie was staying in while she was being patched up.
“She’s a little aggressive, Luna. You may want to stay behind Tyson,” a young nurse says.
“I’m fine.”
“Females, especially daughters of alphas are particularly protective of their mates. You might be her Luna, but I promise you she wouldn’t hesitate to rip your arm off if you stood between her and her mate.” Tyson comments.
“That might’ve been true three years ago, but a lot has changed since then.” I mutter, looking in the window at Katie as she fought against two doctors attempting to bandage her wounds. “But I don’t think she considers herself an upper rank anymore. I don’t think she ever will.”
“Katie is no longer an omega though,” Tyson says confused.
I look at him, my lips pressed tightly together, “she was broken as an omega. A title change doesn’t take away years of systematic abuse, Mr. Alpha.”
Tyson goes to open his mouth, but no words come out.
“I’m gonna go tell her Chase is alright. I think she’ll be a bit more tame after that.”
I enter the room where Katie is still fighting against the doctors. She’s looking around wildly, moaning and grunting in pain as she continues to fight them. Once she catches my eye, she growls suddenly, but quickly goes limp once she realizes who it is.
“Luna-- sorry, Cassie, where is he? Is he okay? Where is he?!” she cries out frantically.
“Let her go.”
The doctors release her and she comes tumbling over to me and lands in a pile at my feet. She begins to sob, crying out. I go to the floor and pull her into my arms, cradling her as she sobs.
I feel her pain, I feel her rejection, I feel everything she’s felt in the last 3 years and I cry along with her, silent tears streaming down my face.
“He’s okay.” I whisper to her. Her tears slowly stop and she looks up at me with an all too familiar expression: hope.
“He’s tired and has a few scrapes, but he’ll be fine. He’s been asking for you.” I say, releasing her from my hug.
“He’s okay.” She breathes out, relieved. She pauses and looks at me, eyes wide, “he’s asking.. for me...?”
“Yes, he’s starting to feel the bond. He knows you’re his mate.”
“What? How-- but--”
I look to Tyson for the words I can’t remember to help fill in the blanks.
"Subitam commutationem.”
Katie’s jaw drops open and she tries to stand, but her bruised body doesn’t let her move like she wants to.
“Katie, you need to lie down.”
“But--”
“He made me promise to come and check on you. And I will tell you the same thing I told him, do you really want the first time for you to come back together after the attack for the other one to be worrying about you?”
She shakes her head.
“You will get bandaged up first and once the doctor gives the go ahead for guests, I will personally bring him by so you two can catch up, alright?”
She nods. I start to move away, but she grabs my arm. “This is real, isn’t it? This is really happening to me?”
“Yes, it is. And it’s good. You don’t need to worry anymore. He’s just as excited to meet you as you are him.”
She releases her grip on my arm and lies back, a look of pure elation on her face as she closes her eyes. I nod to the doctors who had previously been fighting with her and they swarm in like vultures and start their work.
Tyson and I left the hospital room and begin our way to the car.
“This day has been crazy.”
“Indeed it has.” Tyson agrees.
“I need a nap, but afterwards, we need to discuss the attack and figure out Chase’s situation.”
“Of course, Princess.”
I shudder at the nickname.
“Don’t call me that.”
“Technically--”
“Technically I don’t care. You might be a prince of this nightmare, but I am not the princess. I am not your mate. I am just the Pack’s Luna.”
Tyson grabs my arm and pulls me to a stop right before we entered the hospital parking lot.
“You asked me if I would leave all of this for you.”
“Yes.”
“If I would be giving up everything. My family, my wolf, my pack, my responsibilities, my kingdom. For you.”
“Yes.”
“I can do that for you.” I suck in a breath at his words, “I will give up everything for you if it means that I get you. If I get all of you. The reason we are given mates is because they are perfectly designed for us. They ensure that we create the next generation of werewolves and members of our community. You are my mate and you have been chosen to be perfect for me, regardless of whether I am a werewolf or if I was human. I understand that this has been a difficult experience for you. I do. I know that my actions and my position have created so much hardship and caused you so much pain whichI wish I could take all away. And I can. I will give this all up if that is what you desire.”
I stare at him, shocked, my mouth hanging open at his confession. He was staring at me and I felt a strong feeling of hope rush through my body that belonged to us both. It was a feeling we both wanted to cherish and hold on to as long as we both could.
“Tyson, I want that more than anything in the world.”
