Chapter Rush 9

Chapter 9

A hellcopter roared overhead as it landed near the Slater residence. A team of top–notch doctors had been flown in and Nick got them together in a small meeting room to figure out a game plan. Evan was totally bummed and couldn’t find the words. So, it was up to Nick to lay down the cold, hard facts. But even after a ton of talking, they still had no clue what to do.

“Maybe Mr. Slater pepping up just before crashing is like a last hurrah,” one of the doctors guessed.

“A needle inside? Seriously, it sounds like Dr. Wilson’s making excuses… another doctor suspected.

“Old–school remedies just can’t keep up with what we’ve got now. They waited too long to call us in, and at this point, we’re out of options…” a man shook his head.

The meeting room door was cracked open, and Alicia overheard everything while standing outside.

She knew all about the needle because she put it there. She had wanted to talk to Dalton about fixing him up after he woke up, but everything went bonkers when he did, and he had to rush to the hospital before they could chat.

She took a glance at the master bedroom, where Dalton had been taken. He was there now, barely hanging on. To step in or not? She wasn’t sure. Butting in could blow her cover. She was super skilled in healing arts since she was little, but her mom’s last words were like a warning siren: don’t show off those skills until it’s totally safe, or it could end bad. Alicia always listened to those words.

Yet if she didn’t act, Dalton was a goner. Just then, a weird ache hit her in the tummy as if the baby on board was nudging her to save his dad. Even though the kid wasn’t exactly planned, Alicia’s heart got all mushy at the thought of her baby growing up without a dad.

Rubbing her belly, she felt the ache ease up, like maybe the baby got it. Seeing her chance when no one was looking, Alicia slipped into the master bedroom. She locked the door quickly–she couldn’t risk getting caught and making everything messier. It wasn’t her first time patching up Dalton, but it would be the first since he woke up.

Dalton just Lay there knocked out and his face was all pinched up with pain as sweat beaded on his forehead. Alicia leaned in close and whispered, “You’re gonna be okay, Dalton. Just hang in there.” She pulled out her needles, got down to business, and hoped for the best.

At the same time, the meeting room was in chaos. All the hotshot doctors from Hofcaster had bailed after one look at Dalton’s grim state. Normally, these bigwigs would jump at the chance to hang with someone like Dalton, but with him knocking on death’s door, they didn’t want to risk. their own good names. So they made their excuses and left, leaving just one dude behind.

“Why you still hanging around?” Nick asked, his voice dripping with sarcasm. After working with Dalton for years, he knew these cats were only out for themselves. But this guy, sticking around, he must have had some angle.

The young doctor explained, “I’m here to cover for Dr. Ryan Marshall, who’s stuck out of town. I’ve filled him in on Mr. Slater’s condition, and he’ll reach out if anything changes.”

Chapter 9

Nick was too busy Worrying about Dalton to care about clarifications, even though he knew he’d gotten it wrong about the young

oling doctor.

Just then, the sound of engines broke through. Nick looked out the window and saw a bunch of black SUV’s crashing the party. A crew of roughneck piled out–they were Sean’s guys. It was showtime. “Anybody who wants out should bail now; just don’t come crying to me after,” Nick called out as he went downstairs to face the music.

At the front door, Lillian stood her ground, visibly ticked off. “What do you want? You stir up trouble for Mr. Slater, he won’t let it slide!”

The goons in black barely flinched. “Cut the act. We know Dalton’s about to ck out, and we’re here for Alicia,/ Mr. Sean Dalton sent us. Spit it out, where is she?

Their tough talk hung heavy in the air until someone’s cold voice sliced in from the staircase. “Who says Mr. Slater’s almost gone? Make like a tree and leave, or you all might not walk out of here tonight!” Clearly, Sean thought Dalton’s clock was winding down, so it looked like they were in for a wild one tonight.
