Ruler of the Skies

Chapter Ava attends her first Elemental lessons

School Begins

Finally, the day had arrived. The High School for Elementals was full of students and the Dark Winter had passed. Ava, for some reason, was feeling a little apprehensive about today. Perhaps it was because she would now meet her fellow classmates or find out what classes she would have or both. Lorilee and Macee weren’t helping as they were chatting excitedly about nothing in particular.

The Head Matron had done the rounds last night, visiting each dorm and informing the occupants to be in the Hall for assembly at 8am sharp. It was time to go. Lorilee and Macee went first giggling down the corridor while Chereen and Ava followed. As they entered the Hall they were directed to the front by some of the teachers. The Hall had rows of bench seats set up. Students were arranged by year with the first years at the front and the fifth year students at the back. There was a group of teachers standing at the front facing the students as they noisily shuffled, pushed and scrapped their way into the rows. Once all the students were in the Hall, two teachers closed the large doors and then they signalled the Head Matron, who was waiting at the front.

The Head Matron raised one of her hands and a gust of wind blew out over the students, gaining their attention and the Hall fell silent.

“I am Centurion Kaskali, the Head Matron of the High Scholl for Elementals. Today is the first day of the new school year. The Dark Winter has passed and you should all be settled into your dorms. For those returning students you will notice we have a new Head of Weather, Centurion Alisandro.”

She paused and indicated to a Water and Air Centurion standing at one end of the group of teachers.

“The other teachers joining me out in front are, Elemental Tobias, Head of Communications, Centurion Sachio, Head of Pyrotechnics and Metallurgy, Centurion Declan, Head of Combat and Weapons, Elemental Esmae, Head of Administration & Diplomacy and Elemental Hannah, Head of History and Team management.” Each person as they were introduced nodded their head slightly.

“In the back of the Hall, we also have teachers, Elemental Lola-May, Elemental Lilly-Lee, Elemental Kai and Elemental Ta-Gilli.”

Many of the first-year students turned around and tried to identify each teacher as they were introduced, but it wasn’t easy with all the other rows of students in the way.

The Head Matron continued. “This year is an important year as the bi-annual Centurion Duma will take place at the summer solstice. Fifth-year students will be involved in some of the week-long activities and I have no doubt that you will all do the High School proud.” She paused as she surveyed the hall in front of her.

“Now I have the honour of introducing His Excellency, the Head Master of the High School of Elementals.” A tall figure walked into the Hall from a side entrance. There was a gasp from some of the first-year students. The Head Master of the High School of Elementals wore a white robe. Like all Centurions, he wore sleeves of two different colours matching his elements. One was red for Fire and the other was green for Earth. He appeared to be strongly built and his height was enhanced because he wore a hood and mask which totally covered his head, face and neck. The mask was black with the features resembling a serious male face. He was an intimidating figure for those seeing him for the first time.

Ava once again felt a strange feeling come over her. It felt similar to the evil that surrounded the assassin at the Masked Ball.

“Thank you, Head Matron.” He stood next to the Head Matron and turned to face the students.

“Welcome to the High School for Elementals. For over one thousand years, this place has been the centre of learning for the four elements, Earth, Water, Air and Fire. Students entering your fifth and final year, I wish you all the best. The life of an Elemental can be very challenging, but work hard and you will reap the rewards. For those entering their first year, I welcome you into the Elemental community. Your Elemental discovery is ahead of you. Now, I will bestow, on each first-year student, their Elemental symbol to be worn with pride. Head Matron.” He stepped back and Centurion Kaskali stepped forward. Elemental Esmae also came forward carrying a pile of coloured cloth symbols.

“As I call your name, come up and the Head Master will present you with your Elemental symbol. Today, you will wear them pinned to your sleeve, but later you will stitch them on permanently.”

The Head Matron took two of the cloths with the Air symbol from Esmae and called the first student.

“Aisha, your element is Air.” A girl at the end of one of the rows stood up and walked to the front. The Head Matron handed the two symbols to the Head Master and he pinned one on each sleeve of Aisha’s robe. The girl then returned to her seat.

The Head Matron took two of the cloths with the Fire symbol from Esmae and called the second student.

“Ayo, your element is Fire.” A boy in the middle of the front row stood up and walked to the front. The Head Matron handed the two symbols to the Head Master and he pinned one on each sleeve of Ayo’s robe. The boy then returned to his seat.

The Head Matron repeated the process. This time she collected two Water symbols and called the next student. “Castor, your element is Water.” The boy proceeded to the front to receive his symbols. “Dima, your element is Earth.” He stood up in the second row and proceeded to the front. The Head Master pinned the two Earth symbols to the sleeves of his robe.

This process continued until there were only three students left. Ava was feeling a bit nauseous and nervous because her name had not been called yet. The Head Matron paused for a moment and then continued. “We are privileged to have some gifted young Elementals joining our ranks this year. Jacqueth, come forward. You tested with two elements, Water and Earth.” A girl in the row behind Ava stood up and proceeded to the front. The Head Master pinned the Water symbol to one sleeve and the Earth symbol to her other sleeve.

“Petro, you also have two elements, Fire and Earth.” The boy was at the end of the same row that Ava was sitting in. He walked to the front and received his two Elemental symbols.

“And the last student to be presented with her elements is Ava. She tested for two elements, Fire and Air.” Ava stood up and worked her way along the row and then made her way up to the Head Master. He pinned the Fire symbol to her right sleeve and the Air symbol to her left. As he finished he leaned over her and whispered. “I will be keeping a close eye on your progress.”

Ava turned quickly and hurried back to her seat. The Head Master watched her retreat, then turned to the Head Matron, nodded his head and walked out of the Hall.

“That concludes the presentations for this morning. You will all now proceed to your first class for today.” Before the Head Matron could say any more there was a deafening noise as everyone stood and started talking. Students started pushing and shoving their way out of the Hall. Some of the teachers at the front of the Hall watched on in amusement.

First Classes

Centurion Declan, a Fire and Air Elemental had decided to start the first session for Ava’s class of first years, but then he would leave it, to be run by one of the Elemental teachers.

For Combat and Weapons, the class assembled outside in the courtyard between the buildings.

“Attention. I am Centurion Declan and I am the Head of Combat and Weapons. This is Elemental Ta-Gilli and he will be your Combat teacher for your first year.” He turned and walked off without saying anything more. Ta-Gilli wore the robe of a Fire Elemental. He was a middle-aged man of average height with a dark complexion and he looked very fit.

“Good morning. Combat training will be your first-class every day and it will run for the two periods. The other group will do there combat training in the last two periods of the day. Today we had assembly first, so it will be a shorter session. Unfortunately, we have an odd number of you in this group. That means when we are sparring one of you will pair with me. Any questions so far?”

“Sir.” Millard had his hand up. “Will we be using our Elemental skills when sparring?”

“Of course Millard. You’re Elementals, aren’t you? Using your Elemental powers will become part of your life. You would be a fool not to use them. Now form up in four lines, evenly spaced facing me.”

While the students jostled amongst themselves to get into position, Elemental Ta-Gilli walked over to a large bag. He opened it and started pulling out cudgels.

He then asked the front row students to come forward and he gave them a cudgel each that was best for their height. He repeated this for all the rows. Finally, all the students had returned to their row with a cudgel each.

“Place your cudgels on the ground in front of you. We will start with warm-up exercises. Follow my example.”

He started with some leg stretches, then lunges and squats. He then moved on to arm stretches. After a while, he called the students to attention. “Right. Most of you managed to keep up. Sacha, Jamilah and Tollo, you all need to pay more attention.” He gave each of those three a stare to reinforce his point.

“Now. Is there anyone that has not had some training with a cudgel?” He cast his eyes around the group. In the back row, Tanja raised her hand gingerly.

“Ok. That’s good. Only one. Tanja, come down the front and swap places with Yans. Yans, please go to the back row.” Yans looked a bit disappointed having to move but did as he was asked.

“Fine. We are going to start with the basic moves. Make sure you have plenty of room. I don’t want anyone hitting someone next to you.” The student all did a bit of shuffling in their rows giving themselves more space.

“Fighting is all about balance, body position and feet movement. Try and keep your feet under your body at all times and for better balance, your feet should be about shoulder-width apart. Like this.” He proceeded to demonstrate a comfortable well-balanced stance. He was holding his cudgel in front of him with his hands also about shoulder-width apart. He held it horizontal or parallel to the ground.

“Watch as I demonstrate swinging the cudgel in an arc as I step back and forth.” He proceeded to swing the cudgel and take two steps back and then two steps forward.

“Keep your wrists flexible as you swing your cudgel. Now you do the same.” All the students proceeded to repeat what Ta-Gilli had shown them.

“Stop. Most of you are too stiff. This is meant to be a fluid motion. Ava. You seem to have good technique, show your fellow students how it’s done.”

Ava, feeling better now, was a bit surprised to be singled out, but she did as he asked and went through the motions.

“Thank you Ava. Also, did you notice how light she is on her feet? All together let’s go again.”

Ta-Gilli then proceeded to walk around the students and along the rows offering advice, pointing out what each student could do better and generally getting a closer look at their techniques.

“And again.” He called out as he went. After Ta-Gilli had wandered around the whole group he returned to the front and signalled for them to stop.

“There are basically two attacking moves. One is to thrust the cudgel at your opponent like this.”

He turned slightly side on and thrust the point of the cudgel straight ahead, taking one step forward as he lunged.

“Notice how I have my knees slightly bent. Don’t overstretch.” He then stepped back.

“The other move is to position your hands along the cudgel towards one end, raise it over your head and strike down on your opponent. Once again I am stepping forward with knees bent.”

He then demonstrated the moved one more time.

“Now it’s your turn.”

All the students began performing the moves Ta-Gilli had just demonstrated.

“And again. Keep going.” He yelled out as he watched on.

“Ayo, Millard and Chereen. You are overstretching. Yvette, thrust with more force. Everyone again.”

Ta-Gilli walked along the front row, pointing out where they could do something better.

“Stop. Okay. What is the defensive move against the thrust?” He asked.

“Lorilee, stop giggling. This is not funny. How do you defend?” He pressed her for the answer.

Lorilee blushed a little. She had been giggling with Macee about the talk of thrusting.

“With a sideways block. Sir.” She composed herself.

“Come out here and demonstrate for the group.” He waved at her to come to the front.

She took up a position opposite Ta-Gilli. Addressing the group Ta-Gilli said. “I will attack, but will stop short of trying to hit her.” Then to Lorilee, he said. “Prepare yourself to defend.”

He waited a moment as she took a defensive stance, then he moved forward and thrust the cudgel point at her chest. She jerked back and swung her cudgel across her body hitting Ta-Gilli’s cudgel, but she didn’t deflect his cudgel from its intended target. Ta-Gilli had a rigid stance and the cudgel remained positioned a few centimetres from her chest. He stepped back and lowered his weapon.

“What went wrong?” He asked the class. A number of students raised their hands to answer.

“Macee.”

“She was off balance and didn’t hold the block. She just tried to slap your cudgel away.” Macee smiled.

“Very good. You can come out here now and show the class how it should be done. Lorilee. You can go back to your position.”

Macee took up a defensive position opposite her teacher and when she was ready, Ta-Gilli repeated the attacking move. This time Macee stayed in her position, swung her cudgel and blocked the thrust. She held her cudgel against the other, but she was unable to move it off its intended target. Ta-Gilli’s hold and position were too strong.

While the two still had their weapons engaged, Ta-Gilli said. “Macee’s block is okay, but as you can see, she doesn’t have enough body strength to push my weapon away. That will come with practice and better body position. At the moment she is only using her arms.” He stepped back and withdrew his weapon. “You may return to your position.” He directed Macee to go.

“Now. Dima, come to the front. I want you to attack me with the thrusting move.” Dima was a strong-looking boy who had been showing some skill in his practising moves.

“When you are ready.” Ta-Gilli said as Dima got into position opposite him. Dima looked at his classmates with apprehension then prepared himself. He then struck out at the teacher. Ta-Gilli moved so fast the students hardly saw what happened, but the cudgel flew out of Dima’s hands as the two cudgels came into contact. Ta-Gilli held his defensive position with his cudgel held out vertically in front of him, and then he relaxed and stepped back. “Thank you, Dima. Return to your position.”

Ta-Gilli then continues. “Not only can a defensive move protect you, but in this case, it can also become an offensive move. By disarming Dima, I was then in a position to strike him down. Next. We will look at the other attacking move. Nikau come forward.”

Nikau was a tall boy for his age and rather handsome with long flowing brown hair. Once he was in position Ta-Gilli addressed the class.

“In blocking the downward motion from the attacker, you must remember to use your knees and absorb the blow.” He raised his cudgel above his head in a defensive pose and demonstrated moving down and up using his legs.

“Not only do you need to block the blow, but you should try to repel it by forcing back up. So in slow motion, Nikau, I want you to bring your cudgel down at me and I will demonstrate.” The two got into position. “Ready.” Called out Ta-Gilli and Nikau didn’t hesitate. He quickly brought his cudgel up over his head, but then he slowly swung down toward his teacher. Ta-Gilli met the attack with extended arms and then used his arm and knees to move slightly down. Demonstrating how to absorb the blow. Then he recoiled and pushed back up. They both lowered their weapons.

“Okay. Do it again but like you mean it.”

They readied themselves and Nikau drew all his strength and brought down his weapon with what seemed like amazing force. There was a loud whack. In a flash, Ta-Gilli has blocked the blow and Nikau’s cudgel just bounced off sending him backwards. Once again Ta-Gilli was rigid in his defensive stance, his cudgel still above his head. He then relaxed and stepped back.

“When you practice that move with your fellow students, I don’t want anybody using that sort of force. We are not here to harm anyone.” He gave Nikau a sideways glance. “You can return to your position.” Once Nikau had returned to his spot in the row, Ta-Gilli continued. “You will now pair up with the person in front of you or behind you. Ava. Come out here with me.”

Ava didn’t like the idea of being singled out but she did as she was instructed.

“You will take it in turns. One will attack with a thrusting move and the other block. Then swap and the other will attack. Please don’t hit your fellow classmates. Keep your thrusts short of the mark.”

He then turned on Ava. “You can attack me first when you are ready.” He immediately went into a defensive stance.

Ava had sparred many times back in Tamplina with sons of Rangers and even with her brother. She attacked her teacher and was surprised at the force of the block, but she held onto to her cudgel and maintained contract. They then disengaged. She immediate prepared for his attack. Once again, she made good contact but could not move the point of her teacher’s cudgel away from its intended target.

“Good. Ava, you have obviously practised before. Remember to get your body behind the block. Let’s try again.” They continued repeating the attack and then swapping to defend a couple more times each. Then Ta-Gilli called a stop to the class.

“That is all for today. You have a short rest period now until 10:10, before your next class. Put your cudgels back over there with the bag. See you tomorrow.”

The student broke up and dropped their cudgels in a pile before heading back to their dorms. Most thought they would have a quick freshen up before the next class. Ava and Chereen hung back a bit and let Lorilee and Macee go ahead.

“That was okay for our first lesson.” Ava commented.

“You’re pretty good.”

“I had lots of practice back home.”

“Mind control is next. I haven’t had much practice at that.” Observed Chereen.

“You’ll be fine. I wonder who the teacher will be.” Ava asked.

As the two girls approached their room they heard girls arguing.

“You started it. Giggling about thrusting and everything.” Lorilee was not happy. “Then you go and tell the teacher I was off balance.”

“Oh, don’t take it personally. You’ll be fine next time.” Macee countered.

Ava and Chereen entered the room.

“Oh look. There’s the teacher’s pet.” Lorilee said. “Singled out to spar with the teacher.”

“So what? He said that there was an odd number and someone had to pair with him. Besides you both had your time out front with him. Tomorrow it will be someone else.” Ava responded.

“We’ll see.” Was the chorus from the two girls.

“Come on Ava. Let’s go to the next class.” Chereen didn’t feel like hanging around in the room with the other two. Ava hesitated a moment then agreed and the two girls left the room. They heard Lorilee continue the argument with Macee as they walked down the hall.

“We have a few more minutes before class.” Ava said. “I just want to sit somewhere quiet for a moment. How about we go to the library in block C?”

“Ok.” Chereen agreed.

The library had a number of older students rushing around looking or collecting books. Ava headed for her usual spot in front of the fire. As they approach, she noticed another girl already sitting in her usual seat.

“Hello.” She said. “I’m Ava and this is Chereen. You’re in our class aren’t you?”

“Yes. I’m Jacqueth.” The girl replied. She had dark skin, black hair and eyes, and she looked quite muscular for her age.

“When did you arrive?” Asked Chereen as she and Ava sat down.

“Yesterday. I’m from Ravenshowl.”

“You have come a long way.” Commented Ava. “I’m from Tamplina.”

“I’m from a village near Kaemoora. I see you have two ribbons.” Chereen observed.

“Yes. Water and Earth.” Jacqueth replied with little enthusiasm.

“You don’t seem all that excited to be here.” Ava commented.

“My parents are both Panther warriors and it has been a tradition in our family to join the Panthers. As you can see, I’m not an Animoid. They still held out hopes for me, but once I was tested. Well, they were not happy.” Jacqueth explained.

“Same here.” Said Ava. “My parents are suspicious of Centurions. And look at me. Two elements.” She half laughed as she indicated the two ribbons on her robe.

“We had better be going. The next class starts soon.” Said Chereen as she stood up.

“You coming with us?” Asked Ava.

Jacqueth stood up and smiled. The three girls made their way downstairs to the ground floor classrooms.

When they arrived about half the class were already there and had taken all of the back row desks. Each desk could seat two students. The three girls looked at each other a bit awkwardly.

Jacqueth spoke first. “It’s ok. I’ll sit here. You two have that desk.” Ava and Chereen smiled and sat at the desk indicated by Jacqueth, while she sat at the desk in front of them. Some loud laughter made them all look to the door as two boys came bustling through the door. Obviously laughing at something.

They threw themselves down at the desk next to Jacqueth and continued giggling. Lorilee and Macee were the next to arrive. They took one look at Ava and Chereen sitting together and decided to sit at one of the desks in the front row. They sat down and quickly had their heads together whispering something. Ava tried to ignore them and looked around the room recognising others from that morning’s combat class. Soon all the students were seated. There was a buzz around the room as they waited for the teacher.

Not one but two teachers arrived and took up their positions at the front of the room.

“Welcome my name is Esmae.” She was tall, slim and attractive looking with shortish brown hair. “Hello, I’m Lilly-Lee and we are your mind control teachers.” She looked older, average height with greying long blond hair. Both wore the robe of Water Elementals.

“As you can see we are both Water Elementals. The reason why we are here is that the Water element is associated with psychic energy, emotion, intuition and the subconscious. Making us eminently suited to helping you with your mind control.” Lilly-Lee said.

Esmae took over. “Since your test, you will have had some guidance from an Elemental in basic mind control. In the next two periods and every day at this time, we will take you through the mind control exercises and develop your mental skills. These are fundamental to being an Elemental and controlling your element.”

Lilly-Lee interrupted. “Maybe we should ask. Is there anyone that has not had basic instruction in mind control?”

Chereen was the only one to raise her hand.

Lilly-Lee was surprised. “Hasn’t an Elemental attended you?”

“My test was a bit rushed and I left home in a hurry. Miss.” Chereen replied feeling embarrassed about all the attention as everyone was looking at her.

“And no one has attended to you since being here at Daarook? You don’t feel dizzy or nauseous?” Lilly-Lee looked at Esmae surprised and then continued. “I will speak to Head Matron. Now let’s get started. Esmae will look after Chereen for the moment. The rest of you will work with me.” Esmae motioned to Chereen to follow her. She then led Chereen out of the classroom.

“To start, we need to have all the desks moved against the walls. This is so we can all sit on the floor and relax better.” Immediate students were jumping up and pushing desks all over the place. The noise was deafening. Lilly-Lee tried to gain some control by instructing them where to move the desk. Finally, the scrapping noises came to an end and the students were all standing around wondering what was next.

“I want you in pairs sitting back to back on the floor. Space yourselves apart, so you’re not sitting too close to another couple.” The students did as instructed, though there were a few awkward moments when a boy and girl had to pair up.

“Come on. Sit.” Lilly-Lee urged the last pair.

“The first thing you all need to do is slow your breathing and concentrate on being calm. Then, once you are nice and calm you need to look inside yourself. I know you all have been practising this.”

All the students started their breathing exercises. Lilly-Lee sat down at the front of the room and joined in doing her own exercises. She also kept a close eye on everyone to see that they were doing their exercises correctly. After a while when she thought they were ready she broke the silence.

“Now, if you haven’t already, close your eyes and concentrate on your inner self. Look inside and find your inner glow.”

Mason called out. “I don’t see anything. Miss.” There were a few giggles from others. Lilly-Lee thought to herself, there is always one, and then said.

“Quiet everyone. Mason, be patient. It will come. Clear your mind and look deep inside.”

Mason finally saw it.

Lilly-Lee spoke again to everyone. “Now you all see it! It will grow, but remember you must control it, enclose it in your imaginary hand or hands.”

“It is growing. The glow is brighter.” Whispered Gwyn.

Lilly-Lee replied. “Control it, Gwyn. Close your hands around it and keep it safe.”

Everyone sat silently for several more minutes. The glow was safe; everyone could feel a tingle in their minds and hands.

“Okay, everyone. Let your glow go out. By learning to control and hold your inner glow it enables you to do two things. What are they?” Lilly-Lee asked.

Several students shot their hands in the air.

“Yvette. What do you think?”

“Miss. It helps to command your Elemental powers.” Yvette was a small petite girl with long flowing reddish hair and a very fair complexion.

“Yes, and the other. Tollo?” She picked on a boy that didn’t have his hand up.

“Ah. I don’t know. Miss.” Another boy, by the name of Castor, smirked and quaffed at Tollo’s embarrassment.

“No need to be rude, Castor. How about you give us the answer?” Lilly-Lee suggested.

“Ah. Miss. I think it’s to hide our power.” Castor was hesitant.

“Near enough. It can be used to mask your Elemental attributes to those powerful enough to feel the presence of an Elemental.”

Tanja asked. “Can all Elementals feel other Elementals?”

“I’m not sure. Certainly, the more powerful ones can. But it also depends on which elements they control. I imagine the Water Elementals would be better at it than the others.”

“You’re not pushing your Water theories again, Lilly-Lee?” Esmae said as she and Chereen re-entered the room. Chereen walked over near Ava and sat on the floor.

Lilly-Lee stood up and added. “Not at all. Most people know Water Elementals are more psychic than others.” She just smiled at her fellow teacher. They both faced the class.

“Every day you will practice this basic exercise. We need you to get to a point that it becomes automatic. You can do it without thinking. Then we will move onto other exercises, like expanding the glow to fill your body. That is when you will be able to master your elements with more confidence and skill.” Lilly-Lee turned to Esmae and she added. “Any questions?”

Jamilah raised his hand. “Miss. Will we be performing Elemental invocation in this class?”

“Some minor ones. But mostly you will practice working with your elements in the class after lunch. Now you can all practise again.”

Everyone started their routine again and went through the process of finding their inner glow, holding it and then letting it dissipate. After everyone had completed the process, Lilly-Lee addressed the class. “Good. That’s it for today. We will see you tomorrow.”

“Before you all run-off.” Lilly-Lee interrupted them. “Put the desks back in their places. Thank you.”

Once again the room was filled with noise as desked were pushed and pulled back into place. Ava and Chereen were the last to leave.

Ava asked. “I’m surprised and curious that you haven’t felt sick. How was your lesson with Elemental Esmae?”

“It was fine. She said I was gifted for a young Earth Elemental and that mind control seemed to come easy to me. I probably had done some of this stuff before, but didn’t know it was controlling my Elemental powers.” Chereen was very relaxed about it.

Ava smiled and said. “That’s great. Let’s get lunch.”

The afternoon classes started with Basic Elements. Elemental Hannah, a Fire Elemental and Head of History & Team management was standing in front of the class. She was short and on the round side with her greying hair pulled up into a bun.

“Afternoon class. I am Elemental Hannah. In this period we will cover a multitude of subjects. The main topics will be Elemental history and the four elements. I will take some of these classes and some of my colleagues will also take this class, because when we explore the elements we want an Elemental with that particular element to instruct you. No doubt you have heard today the importance of mind control. It is central to the development and control of your Elemental skills. Let me see what some of you know about your elements.” She cast her eye around the room.

“Yvette, Earth. What can you tell me?”

“Earth gives life and is associated with growth.” Yvette replied. Elemental Hannah took some chalk and drew a symbol on the board.

“The Earth symbol.” She commented. “Earth is the element of our flesh and bones. Earth Elementals have the ability to draw energy from the earth and it is the foundation of all the elements.” She paused and picked another student. “Castor. What can you tell us about your element?” As she waited for Castor to reply she drew the Water symbol on the board.

Castor fidgeted in his seat for a moment. “Water is emotional. Water is fluid and some say it gives us psychic powers.” There were a few giggles around the room.

“Well, Water is associated with psychic energy, intuition and the subconscious, but I wouldn’t agree that only Water Elementals can be psychic. Now, Sacha. What about Air?”

“Air is for communications and education.” As Sacha was talking, Hannah drew the Air symbol on the board.

“Air Elementals usually value anything new and untried and they are always keen to learn. The last element is Fire. Ayo, what can you tell us?” Hannah pointed at Ayo.

“Fire Elementals are hot and full of courage.” Ayo said proudly. Once again there were a few giggles around the room.

“Calm down.” Hannah said as she drew the fire symbol on the board. She added. “Fire is commonly associated with the qualities of energy, assertiveness, and yes, passion. Together the four elements form a natural balance and are used to explain the nature and complexity of all matter in terms of these simple substances.”

Elemental Hannah had drawn the four symbols on a north/south and east/west axes and now she drew a circle around the outside of the four symbols.

“The four elements are also associated with the four seasons. Earth with Spring. Water with Summer. Air with Winter and Fire with Autumn. As we study the elements we will look at each one in more detail. Just because you have Elemental powers in one element doesn’t mean you should not know about the other elements, because they interact.” Hannah paused to let the last statement sink in.

“Now. What about Elemental history?” She addressed the class again. “Before the Council of the Elements was formed nearly 2000 years ago, magic was practised by some.”

“Miss. Surely the use of magic is a myth.” Lorilee interrupted.

“Magic is real, but it has diminished as Elemental powers became more common. It was only humans that practised magic and as time passed fewer people took up the old art. Elemental powers seemed to supersede people’s belief in magic and perhaps because it is more natural. Whilst humans could master magic the animal world always had an association with the elements. As you could imagine, animals have a closer relationship with Earth, Water and Air, but as far as we know, before the four Elemental gems appeared no creature had really mastered their true Elemental powers.”

“Miss. Where did the Elemental gems come from?” Asked Dima. A few of his classmates snickered and giggled.

“Dima. Didn’t you learn about Mikaian history at lower school?” Hannah looked a bit concerned.

“Yes. Miss, but I wasn’t very good at school and well I stayed home a lot.” Dima was a little embarrassed.

“Well, I am not going over Mikaia’s early history. Dima you will have to go to the library and do some reading to find out for yourself. However, the origin of the four Elemental gems is cloaked in mystery and after their initial discovery, they disappeared for several hundred years. Somehow the four reappeared at the same time in the hands of four different creatures. The four creatures represented the four different species; one human, one animal, one bird and one creature from the sea. Also by some coincidence, they all had Elemental abilities. They also found the gems had enhanced their powers and allow them to be masters of their element. These four creatures also discovered the gems allowed them to freely communicate with any other creature. After their first meeting, they created the first Council of the Elements and the place they first met is now known as Council Rock, located in the far East. For nearly a thousand years the Council of the Elements ruled over Mikaia. Nature was in perfect balance and peace was had by all. That will be the end of today’s class. We will continue with more Elemental history tomorrow. You are dismissed.”

The students all scrambled to get to the door first as they rushed to have a break before the next class. After a short break, it was time for the final class of the day, communications.

Elemental Tobias was standing in front of the class. There were six stands arranged in a row at the front of the room and on each stand, there was a bird sitting quietly. Ava was excited as this is what she had been waiting for, ever since she came to Daarook.

“My name is Tobias and I am Head of Communications at the High School for Elementals. Every Elemental has the ability to communicate with living creatures, animals or birds. Some of you will find it easy and others will have to work very hard. We will not be inside this classroom all the time. We will also go outside to where the animals and birds live. I have brought along some friends today. These six birds live here at the High School as do many other birds and animals.” The large white parrot rustled its feathers and raised a sulphur crest on its head then settled back to sitting quietly. Several of the students found it amusing.

“Some birds are more susceptible to communications than others. These six birds in front of you are all good communicators.” Tobias walked to the end of the row and stood next to a white owl. He patted her a couple of times and she went “Hoot”. “This is Bessie, a white barn owl. Everyone try and clear your minds and concentrate on Bessie. Is anyone in the room getting anything from Bessie.” He paused and surveyed the class. Ava, Chereen and several other students had their hands up.

“Chereen. What are you getting?” He asked.

“Wow. It’s as clear as if she is talking to me, Sir. She said that she is enjoying you stroking her feathers. She likes looking at all our faces.”

“Hoot.” Chereen was interrupted by Bessie. Everyone laughed.

“For one so young and without any training, Chereen, that is amazing. You have a gift.” Tobias congratulated her. “Millard. You have your hand up. What are you hearing?”

“Ah, Sir, it’s mostly mumbles and the odd word. I got feathers and faces.”

Tobias moved onto the next bird. It was an ordinary brown bird. “This is Benny. Those that didn’t hear Bessie, can you hear anything from Benny?”

Macee and Castor raised their hands. “Good a couple more. Macee, what are you hearing?”

“I think it said something about food. Not quite sure, Sir.”

“What about you Castor?”

“Yes, Sir. He knows you have some food in your pocket. He wants some.” Tobias reached into his pocket and pulled some seeds and gave them to the bird. “Good.” He moved onto the next bird. It was a small yellow and black honeyeater. It was fidgety and jumping around on the perch. “This is Fifi.” Tobias now started to pick out some of the remaining students that had not raised their hands earlier.

Each student was hearing something. Next was a common pigeon called Pie. Tobias quizzed another student then moved onto the next bird which was a large black crow.

“What do you want?” The crow spoke to the amazement of the class.

“Don’t be rude.” Replied Tobias. “This is Burt. As you can hear he actually vocalises, but his vocabulary is limited.”

“Not true.” Burt interrupted. The students laughed.

Tobias turned to Mannes, who had not yet raised his hand. “Mannes. What else is Burt saying, but with his mind.”

“I think he said you’re a stuffed shirt. Sorry, Sir.” Mannes was rather embarrassed.

“No need to apologise. He knows I can hear him.”

Tobias moved onto the last bird, the large white parrot with a sulphur crest. “Lorilee, you are the last. This is Pepe. What is he saying?”

Before she could answer, Pepe said. “Aark. She and I have been having a good old chat.” More laughs from the class.

“To be honest Sir, I am not getting much. The occasional word that is all.” Lorilee conceded.

“Aark. Just as well I can talk.” Replied Pepe.

“Quiet,” Tobias told the bird. “Yes. Pepe is talented and can carry a conversation. Lorilee, don’t worry, birds may not be right for you. You will get your chance with other creatures.”

Tobias now addressed the class. “Remember, I said that all these birds are good communicators and nearly all of you got some connection with one or more of them. For all of you, this is a new experience. It will take time and patience to become skilled enough to communicate freely with more than one or two animals or birds.” Tobias went over and opened one of windows and each bird took off in turn and flew out the window.

“Sir. Won’t they fly away?” Asked Millard.

“No. They are too well fed and it is safe here. None of our animals or birds are caged. I will show you one day.” He shut the window and walked back to the front of the room. “You started your mind control lessons this morning. Good mind control is essential for communications with other creatures. So make sure you practice at every chance you get. There are some excellent books on communication techniques, as Ava can attest, in the library. On the table out the front here, is a list of books you should read. Take a copy on your way out. Dismissed.”

All the students dashed forward to grab a list and headed for the library.

The three girls, Ava, Chereen and Jacqeth found themselves walking together. Ava looked at the book list and said. “I have already read the first book on the list and I have two others in my room. You two should pick a couple of books each.”

Chereen asked. “What’s the first book like?”

“It’s good. It goes over some of the fundamentals of communication. It also has some stories of Elementals experimenting with different communication techniques.”

“Okay, I might start with that one, if no one has taken it. What about you Jacqueth?” She handed the list to Jacqueth who hadn’t picked one up as the other girls had.

“I might try my luck with a couple of these at the bottom. One of them seems to be about bird communications.” Jacqueth smiled at the thought.

After visiting the library the girls headed back to their own rooms. Chereen and Ava said they would meet Jacqueth in the Hall for dinner. Jacqueth went to her dorm which she shared with Sacha, Gwyn and Mia all from the same class.

The three girls met as arranged and sat at one of the long tables opposite two boys from their class. Mannes and Conrad were best friends from Conaldra. After talking amongst themselves, Mannes decided to start a conversation with the girls. “Does anybody know what students do for entertainment on the rest day?” The three girls looked blankly at each other and shook their heads.

Conrad chipped in. “I heard one of the year four students talking about water jets. Sounds like fun.”

“Well, that’s okay if you’re a water Elemental.” Mannes complained.

“Everything doesn’t have to be about fire, you know.” Countered Conrad. Knowing full well that Mannes, being a fire Elemental, was mad about fire.

Ava changed the topic. “What did you think of the communications class?”

“Burt the crow was fun.” Smiled Mannes. “I imagine he could be a bit fowl mouthed.”

Conrad laughed. “Burt’s not a chicken.” The joke fell flat.

Chereen stood up. “Food is coming out. Let’s join the queue.”

They all scrambled to their feet and headed for the back of the queue.

The dinner was plain and the group didn’t chat much while they ate. Once they had finished the group broke up, saying goodnight to each other and then headed for their own rooms.

Pukavan

As Ambrose, Jaymar and the team approached the city gate. Raum suggested that Jalen could fly ahead and give his wife, Grimhilda warning of their return. Jalen was reluctant to go as he knew Grimhilda’s mood was not exactly welcoming after his previous visit. Raum reassured the birdman that all he needed to do was inform Grimhilda of their pending arrival and not to go into any details. Jalen also needed encouragement from Ambrose before he agreed.

When the group entered the city gate, they were greeted but not only Grimhilda, but by the Elemental Rosalina, Tallulah and Commander Prahid of the Pukavan Lancers. Grimhilda smothered her son in kissed and hugs much to Jaymar’s embarrassment. Rosalina also managed to get in a hug, only after Jaymar broke out of his mother’s arms. Then the inevitable happened, Grimhilda rounded on Ambrose. “You’ve got a nerve. Even though you knew I was here worried sick, instead of sending Jaymar straight home. No, you decide to take him on some dangerous mission in a maze of tunnels, no less.”

“I have no defence. I am truly sorry. You have every right to be angry with me, but please hear Jaymar out.” Ambrose replied as humbly as he could.

Jaymar then explained. As he told his mother about his adventure in the clouds and then finding Ambrose in the cave-dwelling, Grimhilda listened but reserved her judgement. Jaymar continued to tell her about the maze, the Ancient One and the altercation with an Elemental behind Daarook. This nearly brought her to tears. When Jaymar had finished his story, Raum decided to air his thoughts. “Grimhilda, we cannot hope to protect Jaymar forever. He is growing up and developing his Elemental powers. Even though we don’t like it, we have to let him find his way, and the best person to help him is Ambrose.” A silence fell over the group.

“I agree, but it doesn’t mean I like it.” Grimhilda finally conceded.

Commander Prahid, who had been waiting patiently, interrupted the family reunion. “Master Ambrose, I have orders from Princess Sienna to bring you to the palace immediately.”

Ambrose nodded his head in acknowledgement then turned to Rosalina. “Looks like the kite worked well. Udolf and Raum will help you get it back to the palace. Jaymar, I will see you tomorrow.” He waved to the group and set off with the Commander.

Elemental Rosalina, signalled for Udolf and Raum to follow her, while the rest headed for their homes.

Ambrose was escorted straight in to see the Princess. Commander Prahid led him to a small room which seemed to be an office. Princess Sienna was seated at a table and looking over some papers.

“Ambrose, you have returned at last. I heard that the boy was found unhurt.” She stood and approached Ambrose.

“Yes, Your Highness. He was very fortunate that Jalen found him. You asked me to come straight away.”

“Yes. Commander you may go.” Prahid bowed but seemed a little reluctant to leave. Once he was gone and the door closed, Sienna resumed her seat.

“Ambrose, negotiations with Lockmort continue to be frustrating and sometimes I doubt their willingness to actually enter into a treaty. Hopefully, with the Dark Winter passing, we will be able to meet more often and for longer.”

“It was never going to easy. The bitterness on both sides runs deep.” Ambrose observed.

“I have other news for you. Gymbala was attacked again, but they again successfully repelled the Dark Terror. We think that one of their leaders was killed. It appears that two Centurions aided in the defence.”

“That is interesting news. Let’s hope the Dark Terror have learnt their lesson and Gymbala will be spared any more attacks.”

“As you know, Prince Jarl is still trying to purge his land of Animoids. Well, recently there was a border class between his militiamen and Princess Aliyah’s Panthers. You can imagine who came out on top.”

“The Panthers.”

“Yes, and now Prince Jarl is demanding compensation. Apparently, Centurions are being brought in to negotiate between the two parties.”

“Any news of where these Centurions will come from?” Asked Ambrose.

“No.”

“Princess Aliyah, will not be happy, that Centurions are involved.” They both fell silent.

Then Sienna asked. “What of your mission?”

Ambrose described his meeting with Cargan and that they managed to block the tunnel behind Daarook. He also told Sienna about his meeting with Demarco.

“What a Dark One? Here, so close to Pukavan.”

“Yes, more than one. It probably explains the attacks we heard about, but I believe their activity will be restricted, as the Dark Winter is now over.”

“Should I send some Lancers there to root them out?”

“Not yet. I have some unfinished business with the Dark Ones.” Ambrose didn’t elaborate on any more details. They continued their discussions regarding the Lockmort negotiations and the ongoing defence of Gymbala, before finally, Sienna said Ambrose could go.

Back at the Inn, Ambrose met up with his friends, Udolf, Fineen, Jalen and Rafeeq. Tallulah had gone back to the sea.

“What’s next?” Fineen posed the question on all their limps.

“We have a moon cycle to work out what to do with the Dark Ones. Princess Sienna is not happy that they are so close and Cargan may have something to say also. I need something to bargain with. Perhaps a place they can move to that is agreeable to all.”

“That will not be easy.” Grumbled Udolf.

“I know. If we can find another cave system far enough away from people that Sienna will be comfortable with.”

Fineen commented. “There would still need to be an ample supply of food for them. Do you know how many are in the cave?”

Ambrose tried remembering back to when they had caught Ishant and what he had told them.

“I don’t think there would be more than six.”

“Aark. What of the necklace?” Enquired Rafeeq.

“One thing I am sure of. Cargan will not allow Demarco to keep it.” The group fell silent as they considered Ambrose’s statement.

Ambrose then asked. “Could three of you go and search the mountains behind Utway to the far West. Very few settlers live out beyond Utway. I suggest Jalen stay here and assist Jaymar with his flying. What do you say?”

The four nodded their heads in agreement, and then they all said goodnight and headed for their rooms.

The next day, after seeing his friends off, Ambrose called on Jaymar and his parents. He was warmly welcomed as they sat around finishing their breakfast.

“How was your meeting with the Princess?” Asked Raum.

“Interesting. Trouble between Prince Jarl and Princess Aliyah seems to be on the rise. I hope things don’t get out of hand, but Prince Jarl seems to have grown increasingly hostile to Animoids. Princess Aliyah is already stretched with the influx of refugees. Apparently, Centurions are being sent in to settle the dispute.”

“What about Lockmort?”

“Slow as ever.” Ambrose then changed the topic. “Jaymar, after seeing how awkward it was for Udolf and your father to carry the kite, I’m going to work with Rosalina, to see if we can make something more portable. Would like to help?”

“Sure. What if I could wear something on my back? That would be cool.” Jaymar was excited.

“If your parents don’t mind. Come to the palace this afternoon.” Ambrose looked at Grimhilda for approval. She just smiled and nodded her head. Ambrose stayed a while longer and enjoyed a coffee, chatting to Raum about where he would be sailing first.

Gymbala

Rookardi had packed the night before and was up early. He went and said his farewell to the Major and Commander of the Pukavan Archers. Only the day before he had received orders from his sect leader, Centurion Graguut. He was to urgently travel to Falsbrook and take part in dispute negotiations between Prince Jarl and Princess Aliyah. There had been a border skirmish and Prince Jarl was demanding compensation. The Dark Winter was over so he could now travel alone.

Lockmort

The Lizard soldiers and Centurion Pryborg had travelled quickly. Stopping only a couple of times and then only for a short rest. The guards on the gate allowed them to enter without question. Pryborg was surprised at the well laid out streets and well-constructed houses that lined many of the main streets. He was led into the main palace, to what appeared to be a small meeting room. After waiting a short time, the Lizard leader Kamboro entered the room. He was accompanied by another creature. Not a Lizard Animoid, but someone looking more like one of the Lizard battle beasts.

“Sir. I am Centurion Pryborg. How may I address you?”

“You can address me as, Lord Kamboro and this is my nephew, Nasrald.”

Pryborg was surprised and not sure what Nasrald was.

“Lord Kamboro. I apologise for passing through your territory without gain formal approval.”

Kamboro raised his hand to stop Pryborg. “No need to apologise. We are currently in negotiations for a treaty with our traditional enemies. The old times have passed. What is the nature of your business?”

“Lord Kamboro. I am an emissary of the High Centurion and I am not at liberty to divulge my purpose. All I ask is that I be permitted to continue on my journey.”

Kamboro looked at Nasrald. He had agreed to try and read the Centurion’s mind. Nasrald gave a slight shake of the head to indicate he had nothing.

“How do I know you are not working to disrupt our negotiations? The Centurion Order works in mysterious ways.” Observed Kamboro.

“I assure you, Lord Kamboro that is not the case.”

“Well, perhaps I just need to get to know you. Discuss recent events. Maybe then I will be in a better position to make a decision on your next movements.”

“So, Lord Kamboro, you are going to hold me against my will.”

“No. Not at all. You can go anytime you like. However, you may find it harder getting out of Lockmort, than getting in. My people are very hostile towards strangers and more so towards Centurions. So, until I can provide an escort for you, I suggest you enjoy my hospitality. Come and let’s get you settled and then we can have lunch.”

Kamboro signalled for Pryborg to follow him. He didn’t really have a choice.

Pukavan

Jaymar arrived at Rosalina’s rooms and found Ambrose and the Elemental looking at some papers.

“Jaymar, we have found something interesting.” Ambrose welcomed the boy. “Rosalina has found a chronical from Aerie. Aerie is way over in the East and they have always revered the eagles that live in the mountains behind the city. It appears that many hundreds of years ago an Air Elemental advisor to the royal family developed a set of wings to help them fly amongst the eagles. It really is quite amazing that I had not come across anything like this before.”

“Plus, to think we have found it in a chronical, here in Pukavan, which could not be further away.” Rosalina sounded excited.

“How do they work?” Asked Jaymar.

“We don’t know. It is only mentioned in written text. There are no drawings. That is why I haven’t noticed before. If there had been drawings it would certainly have caught our attention before this.” Rosalina passed the scroll over to Jaymar, so he could have a look. After reading the text he handed it back. “It does not describe must. A shoulder strap arrangement and a lever to extend the wings. What would they be made of?”

“It would have to be very strong and light. Plus, there no mention of what covers the wings or how long they are.” Rosalina sounded disheartened.

“We can send word through my network to Aerie and see if we can get more information. Do we know any of the Elementals working there?” Asked Ambrose.

“I will look up the Elemental register, but I don’t know anyone over there. As you said they couldn’t be any further away.” Rosalina could at least manage a smile this time.

“Good. In the meantime, Jaymar needs to continue practising. I have asked Jalen to meet us on the wall of the palace. He can fly with Jaymar and teach him a few tricks. Come on. Let’s see if he is there.” Ambrose indicated to Jaymar to follow him. They left Rosalina to search through her Elemental register.

Jalen was waiting for them. Ambrose helped Jaymar into the harness under the kite and soon he was ready to fly.

“Keep within sight of the palace. Jalen. Nothing too hard to start with.” Ambrose instructed.

The next thing the pair were flying. Ambrose watched as they flew out and up. Jalen and Jaymar spent the rest of the afternoon flying together.

Tamplina

Prince Theodor was feeling tired, but proud of himself. Another day of running the Princedom was over with no incidents. Tonight, he had cancelled any meetings with advisors. He just wanted a night to himself. He had made his way to the room with a view out over the garden and slumped himself down on the lounge.

“Your Highness.” Came a voice from behind him. He sat up quickly and looked around.

“I thought I had cancelled all my meetings.” The Prince was a bit blunt.

It was Elemental Seaghan. “Sorry, Your Highness, but I found something of interest in the library.”

“Of interest to whom?” He still was a bit annoyed.

“Master Ambrose and yourself, I would imagine.” Seaghan approached.

“What is it then?” Theodor made room on the lounge and indicated for Seaghan to sit next to him. Once seated, Seaghan opened an old scroll. It looked damaged with bits torn off the edges and stains running across the scroll.

“Your Highness. This is a drawing of the Ravenshowl royal family tree. It covers many generations, starting well before the Animoid Uprising.”

“So, what have you been searching for?” Asked Theodor.

“Your Highness.”

“Stop. Just call me Theodor when there is just the two of us.” Theodor interrupted the Elemental.

“Okay. Theodor, Master Ambrose asked your father, if I could search the library for anything that might be associated with the name Tahmore.”

“The supposed leader of the Animoid Army.”

“Yes. Sir.”

“Go on.”

“Well, Talimar was Princes Hakeem’s brother and after the end of the Animoid Uprising, Talimar was proclaimed the new Prince of Ravenshowl. You can see his name here on the family tree.” Seaghan pointed to the name alongside Hakeem’s. “The stains make it difficult to read all the names through the generations, but have a look at the last entry.”

“Dahlmor, was the Animoid son who disappeared. Didn’t he?” Theodor was trying to remember his history.

“Yes. His father had married a Black Panther and he was described as a black Jackal Animoid. The other interesting thing is that he was tested and turned out to be an Elemental.”

“Why did he disappear?”

“No idea, but apparently after his father died suddenly, the High Council of Mikaia would not proclaim him as the new Prince. His younger brother was proclaimed Prince of Ravenshowl and Dahlmor just disappeared.”

“What is the interest in this old family tree?”

“Take another close look at the name. What do you see?”

Theodor held the scroll up close to his face and stared at it for a while.

“There appears to be another name underneath it. Someone may have made a mistake. Written one name then tried to correct it before writing the correct name over it.”

“The original name was Talimar. The same name as Hakeem’s brother. That is itself is odd, but from a certain view the combined names spell out Tahmore without the ‘e’. What do you think?”

Theodor looked again. “I see it. I never would have without you pointing it out, but you’re right.”

“What if, Dahlmor change his name to Tahmore and somehow ended up in Daarook.”

“That is a bit of a stretch. You must also be surmising that he became a Centurion and potentially the Head Master. I find this all very hard to believe.” Theodor was not convinced.

“It is hard to imagine, but so is the thought, that the Head Master is the leader of the Animoid Army and is also influencing the Dark Terror.”

“We need to get this information to Ambrose.” Theodor was thinking out loud. “The Inn Keeper at the Stagg Inn will most likely know how to get a message to him.”

“I think he needs to actually see this family tree.” Seaghan pointed to the scroll in Theodor’s hands.

“That is going to be difficult as by last accounts he was still in Pukavan. I will have one of my guards go and bring the Inn Keeper here. Thank you Seaghan for bringing this to my attention.”

The Elemental bowed. “At your service. Your Highness.”

They left the room together. Theodor was heading to see the captain of the Guard.
