Chapter 38
Tonight was the night of my engagement party. I was so nervous. To be honest, I wasn’t ready for this engagement yet. I was only sixteen for God’s sake. I wanted to finish high school and go to college. Afer that, I wished to find a decent job and live my own life independently. But all my dreams were shattered. Thanks to my grandfather, the vampire king.
Laying on the bed, I put my head against the pillows, and closed my eyes. There were still several hours left before the party, so I wanted to get some rest for a moment because I had a feeling that tonight would be a very long night.
I jolt awake when I heard the sound of the door being opened. I snapped my head towards the door and found King Bellamy entering my bedroom with several maids in tow.
His arrival threw me in total confusion. He should be sleeping now because the sun hadn’t set yet. So what was he doing in my bedroom this early?
It must be very important so the vampire king came to my bedroom himself at this hour. Otherwise, he would wait till sunset or send Sigmund or Lupita here.
As the king was making his way towards me, the maids waited at the doorway. Maybe they were afraid to move further inside because this room was illuminated by the ray of afternoon sun that streamed through the window. Meanwhile, King Bellamy wasn’t affected by the sun at all. Like Sigmund told me, the older the vampires were, the more they got used to the sun.
The vampire king perched on the edge of the bed, and quickly, I sat upright.
“Grandpa, what brings you here?” I asked out of curiosity.
“Mirabelle, we need to talk.” He spoke with a seriousness that made me tense.
“What’s wrong, Grandpa?” I enquired.
“Listen to me carefully, Mirabelle! This party is very important to me. Tonight, I am going to introduce you as my granddaughter to all of the vampire kingdoms. And I will also announce your engagement to Prince Maximilian. I want you to be on your best behavior or else you’ll suffer the consequences. Are we clear?” He warned me.
“Yes Grandpa,” I answered.
“Good! And remember! You’re not allowed to call me Grandpa when we are at the party, but call me Your Majesty! Is that understood?” He reminded me.
“Yes, Your Majesty,” I replied.
“Now get ready! The maids will help you. Price Maximilian will fetch you later,” he told me.
“Okay, Grandpa,” I said.
Without saying anything else, King Bellamy stood up and swept out of my bedroom.
After the king left, a maid spoke up, “Your Highness, would you mind drawing the curtain? We can’t—”
“Oh I understand,” I cut her off, “Wait a minute!”
I leapt out of my bed, walked towards the windows, and drew the curtain.
After the sun was blocked out, the maids approached me. One of them went into the bathroom and ran the bath for me, while the others were preparing for my make-up and dress.
Once the water was full, the maid called me into the bathroom and told me to have a bath. I complied and had a relaxing bath for about 30 minutes. At last, I got out of the bathtub and wore a bathrobe before walking out of the bathroom.
The maids had me sit facing the dressing table. They applied a flawless make up to my face, and did my hair, styling it into a waterfall plait, and decorated my hair with a tiara.
Those maids then led me into the walk-in closet and assisted me to wear my dress. It was a strapless pink ballgown. The gown looked very elegant and stunning. And I liked it very much.
After that, they helped me to put on a pair of pink high heels. To complete my appearance, the maids also asked me to wear a pair of diamond earings and diamond necklace.
“No, I don’t want to take off my necklace.” I clutched my locket against my chest when the maids tried to take it off so that I could wear the diamond necklace.
“I’m sorry, My Lady, but His Majesty told me that you couldn’t wear that necklace to the ball,” said Lupita who joined the other maids at last minutes to bring me my jewelry.
I didn’t like it when Lupita called me “My Lady”. But I understood why she did that. She didn’t call me by my name since there were other maids here. Like what she told me, she agreed to call me “Rosanne” only when we were alone.
“No! I’m never going to take it off,” I insisted.
“Please understand, My Lady. That locket was design to conceal your vampire scent. There will be hundreds of vampires there. They might try to attack you if they think you’re a human,” Lupita tried to convince me.
“No,” I refused, “This is the only thing that my mother left for me. I’m never going to take it off.”
“I understand that it means a lot to you, My lady. But you have to take it off, it’s for your safety,” Lupita persuaded me.
“I understand,” I said, “But—”
“You still can keep it with you as long as you don’t wear it, My Lady.” Lupita butted in.
“But where can I keep it? It’s impossible to hold it the whole night, right?” I asked confusedly.
“There is a hidden pocket in your dress, My Lady. You can put it there if you want,” Lupita suggested.
I checked my gown quickly, trying to prove Lupita’s words. Apparently, she was right. There was a hidden pocket on the side of my ballgown. Reluctantly, I unclasped my locket and put it into my pocket. At last, Lupita helped me to put on the diamond necklace.
At last, Lupita helped me to put on the diamond necklace
All of the maid, including Lupita, left my room after completing their tasks. Lupita told me to wait in my bedroom until Prince Maximilian came to get me. Well, I didn’t have much choice since they locked my bedroom door from the outside.
As the night fell, Prince Maximilian finally came to pick me up. He looked stunningly handsome in white tuxedo and bow tie.
“Wow you look very beautiful tonight, Princess,” Prince Maximilian praised me.
I felt a warm blush rise to my cheeks. “Thank you.”
“Are you ready?” he asked with a smile.
I shrugged. “I guess.”
“Let’s go!” Prince Maximilian held out his hand to me.
I took his hand, then we exited my bedroom, and strolled towards the ballroom.
