Robofootball: Doublespin

Chapter 41

It was just another dull, depressing Saturday for Carly. For several weeks now Jess had been in a coma. It was in a way getting boring sitting there with him looking lifeless though she knew he was in a deep sleep. He was far from brain dead but traumatized, to what extent no one could ever be sure until when or if he ever woke up. His EEG showed some life on occasion, but Dr. Epstein had said that it was probably just a little dreaming which wasn’t necessarily a bad sign.

“Come back Jess,” she nearly whispered. “I want to wipe that pizza sauce off of your face at BC Pizza, you know, the little bit you always get stuck in the corner of your mouth. You take too big of bites. Remember the Clare County Fair back in the summer? It seems like ages ago. You know how I always made sure that when we rode the Octopus or the Tilt-A-Whirl, or my favorite, The Scrambler, that I got on the opposite momentum side, you know, so that when the ride got growing fast, that I would crunch into you instead of the other way around. I always did a little extra and even you couldn’t keep me back for long. I miss the feel and touch of you too, and it’s been so long since you touched me. Come back to me Jess, please.”

“Love is something far more than desire for sexual intercourse; it is the principal means of escape from the loneliness which afflicts most men and women throughout the greater part of their lives.”

Bertrand Russell
