Nicholas’s body grew hot. It had been a few days since we met, so it didn’t take much time for him to be aroused. I could hear him swallow hard.
Turning me toward him, he hovered above me and leaned into my face. I turned my head away, and his kiss landed on my cheek. Only our shallow breaths filled the air.
I tried to push him away, but there was no way I could budge him. His kisses became more reckless as k resisted, trailing from my cheek to my beck, down to my collarbone, and going further down…
My eyes were wide open in the dark, and I was fully aware as I watched him lose control. When he was about to stop holding back, I murmured, “Did you come to see me just for this?”
Nicholas felt like his heart had stalled despite its rapid pounding earlier. Ariana’s words were so cold that they chilled him to the core.
Ever since he saw her photo online, he had meticulously arranged everything–down to the music festival, where he had Ms. Gardner coordinate with the organizers and artists. It had cost him not only tremendous effort but also a large sum of money.
But no matter how much effort he put in, Ariana merely thought that his only intention was to sleep with her. Taking a deep breath, Nicholas closed his eyes and rolled over to the other side of the bed..
“Let’s just sleep,” he said, sounding exhausted.
Silence enveloped the room. I turned my back toward him. Once, I used to love sneaking into his arms. But now, the gap between us was so wide that it could fit two more people.
Even after closing my eyes, I couldn’t shake off the image of Nicholas performing on stage tonight. I couldn’t recall how he led me out of the venue–only his mesmerizing voice and kisses lingered in my mind.
A twinge of anguish prickled at me. This feeling gnawed at me, especially on sleepless nights where it only intensified and made me feel even more aggrieved.
What I thought was love wasn’t love at all, and what I believed to be affection was never real affection. I couldn’t use my own standards to measure someone else’s actions–it was just to reassure myself.
As I was lost in thoughts, the sun began to rise. My head throbbed. Suddenly, Nicholas‘ phone rang. I quickly shut my eyes and pretended to be asleep.
‘Dad, why are you calling so early?” I heard him whisper into his phone. “Ariana is still sleeping.” Perhaps because the room was so quiet, Daniel’s voice came through loud and clear.
“Nick, don’t ever do something like that again. You’re embarrassing our family by pursuing a woman that way. There are plenty of ways to show your affection to your wife, so you don’t have to degrade yourself like this.”
Nicholas frowned. “Dad, take care of your health and stay off the internet. You don’t need to worry about me and Ariana.”
“I won’t interfere as long as you give me a grandchild..

“Enough, Dad. Can we stop using that line every time? Having a child depends on fate. You can’t rush it.”
Nicholas hung up with a heavy sigh. He came over to my side of the bed, and I could sense him blocking most of the dim light filtering in from the window. He stood there for a long time.
Even though my eyes were closed, his imposing presence was weighing on me. Just as I was about to lose my resolve, he suddenly bent over and pressed a cold kiss to my forehead.
“How can I get the Ariana who used to love me back?”
Upon hearing this, I felt a surge of pain coursing through my chest. The pain spread relentlessly throughout my body as he hung his head in defeat, not even noticing that I had opened my eyes.
