I could not see clearly at first. Though I was almost certain the person on stage was Nicholas, I was not the only one surprised when his side profile suddenly appeared on the big screen.
The performance schedule had been published long ago, and this man on stage was not a star at all. I heard people commenting that anyone hiding their face was surely ugly, at best he could only be called an average–looking guy.
On stage, he suddenly turned to face the audience, as if he already knew where I was. His gaze through the mask fell unerringly on me.
I stepped back and immediately wanted to leave. Suddenly, his fingers pressed hard on the piano, and the melodious tune instantly changed style.
He brought his lips close to the microphone and sang softly, “Do you really know what it means to be ‘the only one‘ to me? Can you close your eyes and see with your heart that I love you, and no one else.
His clean, slightly hoarse voice instantly quieted the previously noisy venue. Everyone’s attention was drawn in, all brought into an inextricable sadness. My chaotic thoughts were forced to stop, as if every line he sang was for me.
Only when he finished the song and stood up from the piano bench did people react and cheer for him. But he did not linger for the applause and flowers.
Someone screamed and asked who he was. He smiled, “Today, I came for just one person. It’s enough that she knows who I am!”
The whole place was in an uproar.
Nicholas was usually so composed, but he started running before leaping down from the stage. The audience immediately made way for him as he ran through, but my feet seemed rooted to the ground. I watched him getting closer and closer, unable to move a step.
Finally, he stood in front of me. Smiling wildly, his chest heaved a little. He asked me, “Did you hear it?”
I nodded stiffly. In those few short seconds, I did not know how much willpower I had to use to regain my
composure.
I only know that when he cupped my face and lowered his head to kiss me, the shock in my heart finally rippled out into reality.
But my interaction with Nicholas was limited to just this kiss. On the way back to the hotel, we sat on opposite sides of the car as if there was an uncrossable boundary between us.
Even his gentle and low goodbye in my ear at the scene seemed fake. He had said, “You are my only one, I truly love you.
Even though I kept telling myself those were just lyrics, It was impossible not to be moved. What Nicholas gave me was every girl’s youthful fantasy. It was romantic.
But I was no longer a young girl. Though I found romance beautiful, I would not lose myself or be moved just for romance. Life was often mundane without much poetry or distant dreams.
It was not until bedtime that Nicholas broke the silence in the darkness. “Tomorrow I’ll go with you to the

I turned over and faced away from him. I was wondering how he suddenly appeared in realized it was a misunderstanding.
City. But now !
“We’re not going. The old lady there said two people who aren’t really bound by fate shouldn’t worship together.”
In the quiet night, it felt like we could hear each other’s heartbeats.
The bed sank beside me as the man moved closer and wrapped his arm around my waist. Burying his face in the crook of my neck, he nuzzled me gently.
“You said we were before. How did it become the other way round?”
