I pushed him away. The smell of alcohol on his breath was overwhelming as if I had been drinking too.

Though this was his first time being so drunk, it was something I would have done when I was younger. Back then, I was constantly anxious. I would swing between high spirits and thoughts of giving up. I even snuck out of the school dormitory to experience the taste of alcohol just because of him.

His sudden confession of liking me caught me off guard. If it were me from before, I would have eagerly. responded. Was his affection not what I had always wanted?

In the past, just hearing Nicholas’s name would have made me rush to him without hesitation. But now, it felt like something was missing.

It seemed that when two people were together, whether they liked each other or not was not that important anymore.

I held his arm and helped him take off his coat and shoes. “I don’t like talking to people who’ve had too much to drink.”

Alcohol was a strange thing. It could infinitely magnify a person’s emotions and turn temporary feelings into something that seemed real.

After sobering up, he would only have to say, “I’m sorry. I drank too much“. Maybe he would not even apologize at all.

I tried to help him to bed, but he grabbed my arm and cupped my face with both hands. The next second, his gaze fell on me. It was filled with an almost sickening intensity.

Although he had lowered his head, I still had to stand on tiptoes to match his height. He said, “Just kissing is fine.”

His kiss was like fireworks exploding in my mouth. His hands were not behaving either. We made out for a while until he pinned me down on the bedroom bed. We were barely dressed anymore.

At the crucial moment, I asked a question, “Nicholas, have you ever considered that your feelings for me might just be physical attraction?” 1

Nicholas’s eyes were already unfocused. Sweat dripped from his burning chest suspended above me. I saw all the struggle in his eyes.

“You’re used to keeping your distance from others, but you don’t dislike my touch. You even indulge in our intimate moments. This is just your genes telling you I’m a high–quality mate who can compensate for your shortcomings. It’s not real affection.”

Nicholas froze. He should have had a child once. “If you don’t want to have children, we won’t.”

But why was he like this? He found it strange too. Perhaps he was also looking for answers.

Still, he was not willing to give up. He lowered his head and fiercely sucked on my collarbone, making me groan in pain.

“If you make another sound, I won’t be able to hold back.” He pulled the blanket over me and wrapped me up tightly. He then rolled over to lie on the other side of the bed.

I snuggled deeper into the blanket. From the corner of my eye, I saw from his body and breathing that he took a long time to calm down.

Later, he lifted a corner of the blanket and squeezed his arm in to hold my hand. Our fingers were tightly interlocked.

He had been drinking, so he would need to sleep. I covered his tummy with a corner of the blanket. He slowly rolled into the blanket and hugged me as he took an afternoon nap.

When we woke up again, night had fallen. I found him by the floor–to–ceiling window in the living room. He turned to me and said, “Look outside.”

“Boom!” In an instant, the sky outside burst into a brilliant display of fireworks. It was breathtakingly beautiful.

I turned to look at him. The firelight illuminated his sharp features. It was like stars had shattered and decorated his face with light.

He said, “This is what I owe you.”

I leaned against the glass. Using my fingers to form a “telescope” over my face, I also hid my tears. This was not what he owed me. This was what he owed our child.
