The illness had hit me like a truck, yet it took its time to leave, clinging onto me, unwilling to let go.

I had lost a lot of weight. But I didn’t want Nicholas to think that I hadn’t been doing well without him, so I purposely wore something thick.

After covering myself up, I found a pair of sunglasses that I rarely wore to cover the dark circles around

my eyes.

The sky was dark, and the second my phone rang, a flash of lightning flashed across the sky. Nicholasvoice blended with the sound of thunder to the point where I wasn’t sure which was deeper.

He urged, “Why aren’t you here yet?”

I looked out the window and into the dark sky as the world blurred into shadows. The rain seemed to have cast a veil over the world, separating the world from sight. You could only hear, but you couldn’t see.

But why did my heart still ache?

“I’ll be there soon.”

1 looked at the time. It was only 7:00 a.m. There was a chance Nicholas had used his connections to get some special treatment. Perhaps he was so eager to divorce me that he couldn’t even wait until the court opened.

The taxi driver asked, “Hey lady, why are you heading to the court so early in the morning? It’s not even open yet!”

I didn’t know how to answer him, so I just insisted that he drive me there. But due to the slippery road, the driver wasn’t able to drive too quickly. So, I could only sit anxiously in the car as I waited.

But when I arrived at the entrance of the court, there wasn’t anything but rain.

I called Nicholas, but his tone was impassive as he said, “I’ll be there soon.” Then, he hung up on me.

My hands trembled as I held a cupcake in my hand. I was about to eat it when Nicholas called and disrupted my plans. The cupcake had already turned slightly soggy.

When I was young, my dad would always tell me that one of our family traditions was to eat a cake on the day of one’s birthday. From the looks of it, Nicholas just wanted me to suffer.

I stood in the rain with an umbrella in hand and ate the soggy cupcake, bite by bite. My pants and shoes were soaked through, and I was so cold that I began to tremble. However, I remained rooted to the spot.

I was the one who wanted the divorce. I could not leave.

I looked around the empty entrance calmly. I wasn’t sure how long I had waited, but the rain was almost about to come to a stop when Nicholas finally arrived.

I stood drenched in the rain while he sat neatly in his car. At that moment, I felt like we were miles and miles apart. He had returned to the man in my memories–distant, elegant, and proud. That version of him felt strange and unfamiliar.

I thought the biggest humiliation I would have to suffer through would be Nicholas waving our divorce

certificafe before me and telling me that the paper was his gift to me.

But now, I realized I had been very wrong. He hadn’t come alone. He hay

walked beside him and waved her hands at me.

brought Jasmine with him. She

She said warmly, “Nick was up all night and couldn’t sleep. He wanted to come earlier, but I needed to eat breakfast due to my body’s condition. So, he’s late because of me. Please don’t blame him.”

They were together for the whole night? I looked down at the steps as my face reflected through the puddle. The rain didn’t seem to have stopped as it streamed down my cheeks.

I said impassively. “There’s no need for that. He sees you as his pet at most. Did you really think he sees you as a person?”

Who he was with was no longer any of my concem.
