Chapter 228

Chapter 0228

I lowered my gaze. When I looked up again, my eyes were flaring with determination.

“I am voluntarily filing for a divorce,” I whispered.

Nicholas fell silent.

The staff patiently asked, “And you, sir?!

Nicholas didn’t answer her. Instead, he turned toward me, and his eyes began reddening.

I felt a sting in my nose. Tears started to well up in my eyes, and I felt as if a heavy storm was pouring down in my heart.

After a long pause, Nicholas looked away and croaked, “It’s the same for me too.”

The staff shot us a skeptical look. “But you don’t seem like you have a bad relationship. You’re-”

Both of us interrupted her in unison, “We don’t have feelings for each other.”

The fact that we had finally developed a pointless mutual understanding on the day of our divorce was quite amusing.

We had been together for so many years, and this was the only notion we could both agree on. Indeed, we didn’t have feelings for each other. Otherwise, we wouldn’t have ended up in divorce.

I was the one who insisted on having a divorce, so I couldn’t show any sign

of sadness.

But what we said earlier still sent a pang of agony through me. Trying to replace it with the idea of “let bygones be bygones“, I instantly found it easier to accept our current situation and maintain my composure.

Our synchronized response took aback the woman. She sighed helplessly and began typing on the computer.

After a few minutes, she said, “The registration is complete. There is a one- month cooling–off period for the divorce.

I smiled and thanked her while Nicholas got up in silence and went out alone. Watching him leave, I felt as if everything that had happened in the past few months had been a dream. Divorce didn’t seem so daunting after

all.

He was biased, so he naturally made his choice when the conflict between Claudia and I reached an irreconcilable point.

We stood facing each other outside the court. Just as I was about to leave, Nicholas stopped me and said, “I’ll visit you tomorrow to draft the divorce agreement.”

I remained silent, so he continued, “I’ll give you more in terms of assets as compensation. If it’s not enough, I can add more. I’ll sort it out tonight.”

I couldn’t seem to focus my gaze on him. My gaze was fixated on a distant spot behind him which I couldn’t quite discern, and I realized my vision had turned blurry.

If this were before, I would’ve mocked him by praising how generous he was. But now, it seemed unnecessary to do so.

“Nicholas, can you give me a few more days? Have you forgotten that I’ve yet to recover from my miscarriage? Let me rest,” I said softly.

Nicholas’s eyes flickered as he met my gaze. “Alright. Wendy will stay with you and take care of you.”

I nodded and smiled. “You don’t have to come over for the drafting of our divorce agreement. Prepare it with your lawyer first and send it to me directly.

“As for the assets, just give me whatever you please. I don’t even mind if you don’t give me anything at all.”

Nicholas pressed his lips together. Shoving his hand into his pocket, he pulled out a pack of cigarettes, seemingly intended to have a smoke. But

then, after a beat, he decided against it and stuffed the pack back.

His hand was still in his pocket, but I could tell from the outline of the fabric that he was clenching his fist.

“That’s fine. You can contact me if you need anything in the future.” He paused before continuing, “I’ll take care of the stuff online for you.

“And regarding the law firm, although the money I’m giving you should be enough for you to live comfortably, I know you might still want to continue working. Are you planning to stay at Jay Caldwell & Co., or are you thinking of starting your own-”

“Nichofas?” I interrupted him gently. “From now on, my affairs have nothing to do with you.”

He just had to take care of Claudia, and he no longer needed to be distracted by people he didn’t care at all.

“I’ll be on my own from now on, and you should move on as well. We won’t be crossing paths again,” I quavered.

Nicholas was stunned. The cold breeze gusted past the hair on his forehead, revealing his intense eyes. “Ariana, aren’t you being too heartless?
