REVENGE OF THE BETRAYED WOLF

Chapter Chapter Fifty-three

After a week at the manor, Freya decided to visit her father with the children, and they planned to stop off at the refuge, as the children were eager to see the orcs. Crono wanted to accompany his children, as he didn't want to be separated from them, but he also wanted to respect Freya's decision to go alone with them. It was with regret that he bade them farewell.

Freya began the journey and, some time later, noticed two vehicles approaching very close to her, glanced in the rear-view mirror to make sure the children had fastened their seatbelts, and quickened the pace of the car a little. "Mommy, what's wrong?" asked Metis, surprised to feel the car move.

Freya looked carefully at the two approaching cars and realized they were being followed. She remained calm so as not to worry the children.

"Don't worry, darling. We're only being followed by two cars. But trust Mummy, we'll get to Grandpa's house just fine, okay?" said Freya with a reassuring smile.

Metis nodded nervously. Freya continued driving and watched the cars following them, wondering who they might be. She remained vigilant, but tried not to show her concern to the children.

Freya felt the impact of the shots on the tank and cursed herself for not having listened to Crono so that some of his guards could accompany them. With a lump in her throat, she addressed her children. "Children, lie down as much as you can and don't look up for anything."

Her nervousness increased as she heard the sobs of Psyche and Ajax as she watched the tires being shot out. Freya quickened the pace of the car, unsure of what to do. They were on an isolated road, surrounded by forests on one side and ravines on the other. In a calm voice, so as not to destabilize her children any further, she said to her puppy.

"Metis, don't look up, just reach out. I'm going to hand you the phone and dial Crono's number. Tell him Mommy's being chased and they're shooting."

"Okay, Mom."

Freya watched in the rearview mirror as Metis unbuckled her seatbelt and, without fully rising, stretched out on the seat, half her body bent outward. With her head bowed, she held out her hands to Freya and said insistently. "Mommy, give me the phone".

Freya deftly grabbed the phone, reached for the ignition key and handed it to her daughter, without taking her eyes off the road and the vehicles that continued to pull. Despite the movement of the car, Metis picked up the phone with difficulty and searched for Crono's name, then when she found it, she pressed it and brought the phone to her ear.

"Hello, Freya," Crono answered from his office as he consulted some papers, oblivious to the tension in his family.

"Dad, it's Metis. We're in danger, cars are chasing us. We're being chased."

Crono felt a shiver run through his body and he gasped, with anxiety in his voice he asked.

"Are you all right, which way are you going?"

"Ajax and Psyche are crying a lot and they're very scared, but we're fine. Mami is driving to avoid the shots from those cars."

Crono, hearing the shots, felt his legs tremble, and rushed out of the office with the phone to his ear. As he headed for the exit, he continued to talk to his daughter, the anguish evident in his voice. "Which way are you?"

"Mom, which way are we? Dad asks." Metis turned to her mother, calmly.

"Tell them it's the main road, about two hours from the entrance to the Western Prides." Freya let out a muffled sigh as she felt a bullet hit one of the rear tires, without losing her balance, she continued, "Tell them those wolves are armed and I have no weapons. That I'm going to park at the edge of the forest and try to hide."

Métis, hearing her mother, relayed the information to Crono.

"Dad, we're about two hours from..." he falls silent because he can't remember the exact name, but hears his mother repeat "Western Prides," "So, Western Prides. These men are shooting and Mom has no guns. She'll go to the shore to hide us in the woods."

"Princess, tell Mom I'm coming to get you. Stay safe until I get there." Crono hung up and left the mansion. He called the commander of his guards and expressed in a gruff voice that he felt a mixture of fury and fear.

"Prepare a team of the best emergency men, weapons and vehicles. Freya and the children are in danger. I've got to get to them, fast!" he ordered urgently, the tension showing in his tone of voice.

"Yes, sir," said the man, almost running away.

The men appeared armed in front of Crono, and with his men climbed onto the wagons at full speed, leaving the mansion leaving the dust behind them. Urgency and determination were palpable in the air as they headed for the main road in search of Freya and the children.

As Freya kept some distance from the two cars, she accelerated again. She needed to gain ground so she could stop and escape into the woods. With one tire down, she knew it wouldn't be long before they caught up with her. "My loves, I need your help. I know it's hard, but you, my little ones, you're brave, you can do it. I need you to get in the front seat one at a time, and I'll try to help you."

"I'll help you, Mom. My little brothers can go first," Metis said boldly.

"Enjoy it now, puppies!" shouted Freya as she spotted the cars a little further on, holding on to the steering wheel so as not to lose control.

Ajax was the first to pass, Métis pushing them so he wouldn't fall backwards, and Freya with her right hand quickly grabbed him so he wouldn't hit his head on the glass. The carriage moved forward intensely. Psyche was the second to pass, and Métis was the last. Freya feared that if she stopped the chariot, she wouldn't be able to protect her children, especially Métis who couldn't run.

With the three children ahead, Freya said to them.

"I'm going to stop. When you feel the car stop, Metis, open the door and get out quickly."

The three children nodded and Freya lined up. She quickly got out of the carriage, followed by her children, who did the same. She quickly took their hands and they set off into the forest. Freya wanted to find a safe place to hide her little ones, so she could confront her attackers.
