Chapter 243 Revealing Her True Colors
Lily could not dodge the cup in time as water splashed on her face. The water washed away the makeup she had put on to bluff Steven, revealing her true colors. Steven was infuriated to see Lily going to such extreme measures to con him.
He pointed at Lily and bellowed, "Get out of here, you b*tch!"
"Dad, have you gotten things mixed up? I'm Lily. I'm your daughter, Lily."
"Get lost! You're an illegitimate child!" Steven's hands trembled as he spoke. Edric let out a snicker as he stood by the side and said, "Miss Cook, look at this!"
Lily took over the report and glanced at the content, "Whose report is this?"
"It's yours and Mr. Cook's. Do you still think that Mr. Cook is your biological father?"
"This is impossible!" Lily was taken aback. She had always thought that she was Steven's daughter. Never in a million years would she think that she actually was not related to Steven at all.
"Why would it be impossible? Your mother, Deborah, was a famous woman in Cat Alley. I don't know whose child you are, Miss Cook. Maybe you can ask your uncle, Simon. He probably would know which gangster's child you belong to!"
Lily's face flushed scarlet red, and she left with a crestfallen look.
Marie had been recovering well. When Margaret heard that Marie was getting better, she went to the hospital to visit her in person. When Marie saw Margaret, she thought she was dreaming. Her eyes widened in disbelief and she thought, "Isn't Margaret comatose? Why is she standing in front of me?" She rubbed her eyes and mumbled, "Am I dreaming?"
"You're not dreaming. You must be disappointed to see that I'm still alive, right?" Margaret sneered.
Marie knew that Margaret was genuinely alive upon hearing her sarcastic voice. She was frightened and hurriedly defended herself, "I didn't mean to treat you that way. It was all Deborah's fault. She had threatened me with my past crimes."
"Alright, you can stop acting now. I know all the evil things that you've done!" Margaret interrupted her and glared at Marie with disgust.
She had always viewed this woman who was lying on the sickbed as her best friend. People generally said that doctors were angels in disguise, but Marie was not an angel at all. She was a wicked snake that had taken advantage of her trust towards her and brought disharmony to her family. She was the reason why her son and Irene had to divorce each other and she had nearly killed her.
Recalling the past, she could not resist wanting to skin Marie alive to get rid of the hatred accumulated in her heart.
"I really had been blind in the past by regarding you as my best friend and giving you all my trust. It's hilarious to see a beautiful and noble lady who's actually a b*tch, working together with a gangster. You even had an affair with Steven. Besides harming me, you even killed your sister. Marie, why are you so evil?" Margaret questioned.
"I didn't do that!"
"Marie, don't deny it. I know everything about what you've done. I'm not here to see you because I care about you. I'm here to give you retribution, and tell you the truth. You'll definitely be happy upon hearing it," Margaret glared at Marie with disdain. She wondered how Marie would react when she knew that Lily was not actually her biological daughter.
Marie looked down and dared not face Margaret's cold glare at her. Although Margaret had a short temper and behaved snobbishly, she had treated Marie well. She would share every good moment with her and share her true feelings with her. If it was not for her daughter's happiness, she would not have schemed against her. Marie felt guilty, but she did not think that she was in the wrong. She had done all of those things for her daughter. If she was given another chance, she would do the same again.
I know the reason you helped Deborah and Lily so much to set my family up. You must think that Lily is your own daughter, right? I'm telling you, you're wrong. Lily is not your daughter but Deborah's. You've been tricked!"
Margaret felt disgusted as she looked at Marie. Marie kept dodging Margaret's burning gaze. Margaret knew that Marie would not regret her decisions from the past. So, she spared nothing when she started telling the truth.
Marie would never believe that she had been used by Deborah. She retorted, "That's impossible!"
"Why is it impossible? Do you think you're that smart? Do you think you are the only one who can frame others?" Margaret snickered slyly, "Deborah isn't as stupid as you think. She knew that you were plotting against her, so she countered back by using your own trick against yourself!"
"No! She wouldn't know about that!" Marie no longer had to put on an act as Margaret already knew everything. "Simon wouldn't send his daughter away as cruelly like that."
"Haha! Marie, you're indeed an idiot. Deborah found out that you were trying to frame her and Steven back then. You had an affair with Steven that night. The child you gave birth to isn't Simon's, do you understand?" Margaret explained smugly, "You're really too smart for your own good. How pitiful you are. Deborah had used you for so many years while you were doing your best for the sake of another person's daughter."
"No, you're just provoking me because you hate me. What happened that year wasn't what you've said. Lily is my biological daughter!" Marie refused to accept the truth.
"Since you're so stubborn, then I'll let the person involved tell you the truth!" The moment Margaret finished her sentence, the door to the ward opened, and Simon entered the room.
"Marie, Mrs. Myers is telling the
truth. When you had an affair with Steven that year, Deborah made me take you away from the bed. You had told me to exchange the babies, but Deborah found out. She threatened me to return the baby to you without telling you. Hence, the baby that you had sent away was actually your daughter. Also, that daughter isn't ours. She doesn't have the same blood type as both of us. I believe that the child is Steven's biological daughter. Back then, when I had carried her away, I couldn't bear to see her pitiful face. So, I had stolen your jade pendant and put it on her," Simon poured out the truth to Marie.
Marie couldn't believe her ears, "I don't trust any of you. Both of you are lying to me!"
"Is there any need for us to lie to you at a time like this?" Margaret snapped back, "Why can't you just accept this fact?"
"No! I don't believe you all!" Marie shrieked. If what they said was true, then it would mean that she had done her best to help Deborah's daughter and she had tried to kill Rowane, who was her own biological daughter. How could Marie accept the fact that she had plotted to kill her own daughter?
"I understand why you don't want to
admit all this. You had used Rowane
to trick Edric and you were afraid that the news would be exposed so you hired Dunn to assassinate Rowane. You're refusing to admit it because you can't accept that all this while, you had tried to kill your own daughter. However, facts are facts. Rowane is your biological daughter. If you don't believe us, you can just do a paternity test with Lily."
Marie was on the brink of collapsing, "I won't do it. Lily is my daughter. I won't believe anything that both of you have said!"
"You are really obstinate. Marie, don't deny it. We've already done a DNA test using Rowane's hair and your hair. The results were a match. You and Rowane are indeed mother and daughter. If only you hadn't been so wicked and didn't have the intentions to scheme against others, you would have noticed that Rowane looked a lot like you."
Margaret spoke the truth. Rowane looked similar to her indeed. However, she had never thought that it was because they were related. Marie covered her face with her hands. How could this be! "What goes around comes around, Marie. Do you think that you can escape punishment since Deborah is dead? Let me tell you this, I'll never forgive you! A wicked and vicious woman like you deserves punishment. You're going to rot in jail for the rest of your life and enjoy the endless taste of remorse!" Margaret threw a dirty look at Marie before striding out of the ward.
The police had taken Loraine and Jackson to the police station for severe interrogation. Loraine knew that she had nowhere to run. Even if she managed to escape the police she knew that Margaret would never forgive her. She was at a dead-end. She did not want Jackson to take advantage of her either. Jackson had blinded her when he had beaten her up. Loraine must have an alibi no matter what. She planned to bring Jackson down with her. So, she said that she had only been following Jackson's orders.
Jackson was a man of his word. He told the truth when the police interrogated him. Edric knew that Jackson had strong integrity. He heard that Loraine was pulling Jackson into hot water, so he did not let Loraine do whatever she wanted. He pulled some strings to protect Jackson and managed to put all the blame on Loraine.
In the end, Jackson was sentenced for hurting someone without malicious intentions. Edric arranged Jackson to receive compassionate release and Jackson got out unscathed.
Jackson was a grateful person. When he knew that Edric was the person who had saved him, he swore his loyalty and gratitude to Edric. Those were matters to be addressed in the future. On the other hand, Loraine had initially thought that Jackson would go down with her. However, she did not expect Jackson to be released without any charges. She was filled with hatred in that instant.
While waiting for the date of her death sentence, Edric ensured that people took "great care" of her. At the detention center, Loraine once again experienced life that was worse than death. She regretted her actions, but it was too late. In the end, Loraine had to face her inevitable death. On the day of her death penalty, Loraine was only left with her life hanging by a thread.
Dunn was subdued by the police. After Rowane was rescued and a police report was filed, the police called Nathan to pick Rowane up. Rowane, who had managed to recover her memories, recalled the times when Marie had tricked her into framing Edric. She instantly felt resentful and hateful.
She must have caused a lot of trouble between Edric and Irene. Edric had been kind to her, but she had returned his kindness with cruelty. Edric probably hated her to his core.
Fortunately, the heavens had allowed her to survive due to Nathan's help. Otherwise, she would have to bear the responsibility.
No, she had to tell Edric and Irene about Marie's true colors. She had to bring Marie, that vicious woman, to justice!
