Reborn in steel

Chapter 10

A Humphrey path

This entire ordeal that’s happened with this super weapon, The past keeps coming back to me more and more. If I had gone back, I could change a lot of things from happenin. But as my Pa once said to me, “If you make a mess, clean it up.” and boy have I made a big one. All the loose ends have to be tied. My pa had to do the same once. A long while back, when I was around 5 years old, my Pa had a nice little watermelon farm in good ole Minnesota. My Pa made me work my butt off to help with the farm, he had one arm so he could only do so much. But one day he sat me down, got in his rocking chair and told me. “I need you to know somin boy. One day you gon have enemies, lots of em. Even if you don’t intend them to be your enemy, they will be. Some will try to come after ya. While others are cruel enough to get to the things you love most, and when they go below the belt like that. Your only option is revenge.” “What you tryna tell me, pa?” He pointed to an axe he had in the corner. The one he always used the watermelons outside. “Grab that axe over there, put a coat on, and follow me outside.” I took it with me and grabbed my fur coat made from a wolves skin and followed my pa. With my size at the time, that axe was heavier than all hell. And freezing cold in the middle of winter, dead of night. My pa had his lantern with him, we were going deep in the woods. I didn’t know where he was taking me, but I was scared than all heck. But then we showed up on this little wolf den, we were a far way from home. The wolf was sleeping, my Pa look at that wolf with nothing but cold dead stare. He woke up the wolf by kicking and hitting it with his lantern. It got up from its den and was snarling, looking ready to have its midnight snack. My pa told me these exact words. “I want you to kill that bastard, I don’t want cha back until you do.” He left me and walked off. I was screaming and for him crying snot-nosed and everything, I was so scared I may have soiled myself. The wolf was still snarling and getting closer and closer. I had finally given in and tried my hardest to kill the bastard. I took my first swing, and it jumped on me. I tried to keep its jaws from destroying my face. A rock was close by I had to use my other hand to grab, but the sucker bites down on my hand hard, I was screaming in pain. But I was able to manage, knocking that sucker with the rock. It was knocked down for a moment, enough for me to get a grasp of what the hell was going on. I saw the blood on my hand and within me something broke, I had the adrenaline and the anger to pick up the axe and cut it deep in the stomach. I just kept hittin and hittin until it got quiet, and it was nearly in two, making snow all red and me cover in blood. I took the axe back with me and headed back home the sky was turning blue the morning was soon coming, and I had to look back on what just happened. I kept thinking to myself. Why would my pa do that? Was he trying to kill me? I still wonder that 100 years later. I finally came back knocked on the door the sun was rising up it looked beautiful that day. My Pa opened the door and looked at me up and down. He carried me in, set me on my bed. He wrapped my hand. And gave me some soup to warm myself up. Then he sat with me and told me. “Thank you son.” “For what?” “That wolf I told you to kill. Well, believe it or not, is the one that killed your mother and sisters.” I was pale as a ghost when he told me that I never knew I had sisters and I always thought my Ma went off somewhere. It explained why there were so many other rooms that had beds in them, but Pa told me to never go in them. “How did it happen?” I asked him. “Well it was during the spring time you was only a week old, your mother, and sister were going on a nice afternoon stroll in the woods. I let em go on and looked over you while they were gone. I took a nap, hours went by. They weren’t back, yet, I got a little worried and went out there to go see what was going on. I went deeper into the woods and finally saw your momma and them. There was guts splatter everywhere with your momma just.” He paused for a minute to keep me from seeing him cry. “She was just lying there with no soul left in her body. Then I see that wolf with a full belly, I was beyond furious. I tried to strangle that bastard with my bare hands. But it ended up taking one of them.” He chuckled. “It looks like it almost did the same to you. If I could, had done it myself, but I’m not young anymore. That’s why I thanked ya. It was a loose end that needed tying.” After that day, life went on. But I still think back on it till this day. I need to do what I did years ago and kill the wolf. Make that two wolves. “Is everything setup there? Over.” “Yes sir, the convention is currently active, people are coming in. But no sight of the robot yet. Over.:” “Well, keep an eye out. And barricade this town from top to bottom, No one in and No one out. And have memory wiping devices on stand by, I want everyone’s memory cleared. Over.” “Yes sir.”
