Chapter 41

Mooney asked Jameson how the operation was going again. They were in his office. This one wasn’t bugged. No way. He’d made sure of it. They were alone.

“We just got a message saying mission accomplished. No problems. I talked to Chenoweh directly.

“It certainly took a while to find this one.. Slippery bugger. Chenoweh again? You didn’t talk to Skinner?” asked Mooney. He was relieved but nervous about Skinner’s evasiveness.

“Yeah. Mr. Morgan moved around more than the others and left less of a trail. We wasted a lot of time looking for the sailboat he’d been travelling on, but apparently it was sunk. So it’s done finally. That was the last link. We’re ok now. Skinner had an accident apparently. He’s incapacitated. Something about a fall.” Anderson looked tired.

“What else did he say?” Asked Mooney. He had a smile on his face for the first time in months.

“Nothing. It was a very short message. I suppose they were in a hurry for some reason. We’ll know more later. They’re on their way home.”

“You used the terrorist story?”

“Yes. As far as they know, our boys are chasing down terrorists or traitors.”

“Good. But let’s talk to Skinner next time. I want a complete report.”

“Of course. Anything else, Sir?”

“How are we doing for fuel?”

“Running out. What we had is getting old. Diesel only lasts about a year, and we used most of it anyway…”

“We need to produce oil again asap.”

“How do we go about that? We no longer have the financial structure to make it appealing to anyone.”

“We might have to deal with other countries. Someone out there must be producing.”

“They’ll ask a lot.”

“Give em a lot then. Offer anything. Make promises you can’t keep, I don’t care, but we can’t get anywhere without fuel.”
