Chapter 23
I fell to my knees and began to cry.
“Oh, Helen,” I said.
Jonathon called for help on his radio, but I knew it was too late.
Kendra helped me to our room while Jackson and Jonathon waited for help.
The officers came and I explained everything to them.
Jonathon stayed after they left.
“I’m so sorry, babe,” he said, kneeling next to the bed.
“Babe?” Kendra asked.
“I’m staying.”
I smiled through my tears.
“I came by because there was something bothering me about the whole adoption thing.”
“Okay.”
“I know the lady at the adoption agency. I went to speak with her. Helen, apparently, had threatened her. Your kids have been in foster care.”
I sat up. “What?”
“You can get them back.”
“Why did she tell you about Helen?”
“I saw her on the videos from the hotel. I saw her set the fire. I showed her picture to the lady at the agency.”
“Okay.”
“I went to the hospital and they told me everything.”
“Go back to the kids being in foster care,” Jackson said. “What’s that?”
“They were adopted ten years ago, all to different homes. They never acclimated to their new homes. They were adopted a few years later, but returned. They made the family nervous. They could tell things before they happened.”
“What?”
“So, they brought them back. They’ve only been able to get them into temporary homes.”
I jumped out of bed and ran out of the home.
I was going to get them back!
