Chapter 19

A couple of weeks passed and I hadn’t heard from Jonathon or the adoption agency. I was getting worried.

The phone rang.

“Hello?” I asked. “May I help you?”

“I’m looking for Hailey Jonston,” the caller said.

“This is her.”

“I’m Amanda from the adoption agency.”

“Yes. Thank you for finally calling me back. Is there any word?”

“You said that you put a set of twins up for adoption, correct?”

“Yes.”

“Well, according to the paperwork that I found for the date that you mentioned, there were three children, triplet girls brought in: Anita, Merry, and Laurell.”

“Laurell didn’t make it though. We were told that our third little girl had passed away during their first night.”

“I’m looking at her live birth certificate and there’s no mention of death. There were three newborns here for about three weeks. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to all go to the same family.”

“Please, tell me where they are. I made a terrible mistake.”

“You signed for a closed adoption. I can’t say anything.”

“I know, I know that, but please. You don’t understand. All of this time I thought that one of my children was dead. I never even got to see her. Please, can’t you just bend the rules? Just this once?”

“If I did this for you then I’d have to do it for everyone.”

“Who is going to find out? I’m not talking to other parents who’ve put their children up for adoption. If I even decide to speak with the parents, I don’t have to say that you told me anything. I can just say that I found it on the internet. Please.”

“Fine. I can hear the desperation in your voice, but you never heard this from me.”

“Heard what?”

“Thank you.”

“No, thank you.”

The woman ran off the addresses as well as phone numbers and email addresses of all three of their parents. “Thank you again.”

“Sure. Have a nice day.”

“I will.”

I hung up and ran into the living room where Kendra and Jackson were at.

“That was the lady from the adoption agency and you’ll never guess what she told me,” I said, excitedly.

“What?” Jackson asked.

“What she’d say?” Kendra asked.

“Laurell is alive!”

They looked at me. “What?”

“Yes. She said that according to her paperwork that we’d put three babies up for adoption. Three triplet girls and gave me their names. I don’t know what happened, but maybe I can talk to Jonathon and see if he can investigate or something. Anyway, they’re all alive and living nearby.”

“How can that be?” Jackson asked. “What does the hospital say?”

“I haven’t called them. Do you think I should?”

“We should probably find out what happened and why we were told our daughter was dead when she wasn’t.”

“Okay.”

I picked up the phone, dialed information, and then asked for the hospital. They connected me and then it started.
