Chapter 11

We arrived a couple of hours later at her place. With great care, we entered the apartment and gathered the things she wanted.

Clothes, pictures, and make up. Photo albums as well as framed photos throughout the apartment.

“I’ll call my landlord on Monday and let her know that I’ll no longer be needing the space and that she can sell anything left or donate it,” Kendra said, as we exited the building. “Just in case I come across anything I didn’t get today, this will give me time to double check and pick it up.”

“Good,” I said. “Before we go home there’s a stop I want to make.”

“Sounds good. Do you recall if I grabbed my day planner?”

“Yeah. I think you put it in my purse. We can check in the car.”

“Great. Otherwise I’ll need to call my doctor and get my appointments again.”

“No worries.”

We got into my car and began to pull away when a large explosion rocked the car. Kendra and I looked back and her entire building had exploded.

* * *

“Honestly, officer,” I said. “We were about halfway down the block when it exploded. We could have just kept going.”

“Right,” Kendra said. “We’re the ones that called it in.”

“Did anyone else see you leave?” the officer asked.

“I don’t know. We weren’t paying attention.”

“I just met Hailey a couple of days ago when my work burned up and I’ve been staying with her because I didn’t feel safe after that. She rescued me.”

“Kendra is moving in with me, at least until after her baby is born. We were only here to pick up clothes and things.”

“Family photos and the like. We’d gotten everything with plans to come back tomorrow or the next day if I hadn’t had everything I wanted.”

“Exactly.”

“Okay. Just don’t leave town.”

“We have no plans to leave town.”

“Good.” He pulled out a business card. “Give me a call if anything else comes to mind.”

“Yes, Officer.”

We walked away and Kendra whispered, “He’s kind of cute.”

“I know,” I said, smiling. “Maybe we’ll invite him over.”

“Do you think he’d like that?”

“I don’t know, but there’s only one way to find out.”

“So true, baby, so true.”

We got into my car and headed home. This was going to take some planning.
