Chapter 29
Chapter 29
By this time, it was already close to 6 a.m., and the city was beginning to stir.
The curtains were not drawn, and let in patches of warm sunlight that illuminated the entire room. Naomi’s silhouette on the couch drew Charles’s attention immediately.
Her dark hair spilled all over the couch as she breathed deeply, fast asleep in a curled position. Her eyelashes fluttered with every breath she took, and the morning sun basked her in a warm glow.
Charles felt as though his heart was about to melt.
Naomi was in such deep slumber that she could not even hear Charles calling her, so he tiptoed into the room and gently placed a blanket over her.
However, as he bent down to tuck her in, he noticed her face was flushed in an unusual shade of red.
Besides that, she also seemed to be breathing faster and deeper than normal.
Charles reached out to gently touch her forehead.
It was burning hot!
“Naomi?”
She did not stir.
Without a moment’s hesitation, Charles scooped her up in his arms and sprinted out of the room.
Meanwhile, it rained heavily that night in Willowstown, so much so that even after the rain stopped, the air was still enveloped in heavy humidity that was a fresh break from the usual heat.
Scott woke up early as usual and came downstairs freshly shaved and fully dressed.
He paused at the foot of the stairs.
A person was sitting on his couch.
Irene.
She was wearing a violet dress with a white silk scarf and a beautiful jade brooch, her legs stacked elegantly over each other as she sipped a cup of tea. When she heard Scott’s footsteps, she gently set down her cup and turned to smile at him. “Going to work?”
Scott continued to stare at her as he made his way toward her. “What are you doing here?”
He sat down across from her and poured himself a cup of tea.
Scott did not have a maid, instead, he hired a cleaner who would come by for a few hours every day to keep the house tidy. When Naomi was still around, she was always in charge of Scott’s meals and other household tasks, and he was yet to find someone to take over after she left.
Scott already assigned Jay to help him hire a housekeeper to clean the house and make his breakfast

after he returned from his business trips. At this time, the housekeeper already finished preparing his breakfast and left.
Irene made herself at home.
Irene stared at Scott with a soft smile that she reserved only for him. “I know you’re busy, but I still think I should tell you this in person. Today is Mr. Yale’s birthday. His family is going to host a little get–together for him this afternoon at The Oriental. You have to be there.”
The Lawsons were such a powerful family that they had connections to almost all the elite members. of Willowstown. Mr. Yale was not related to the Lawsons, but they were business partners for many years and were good friends with Scott’s father, so Scott was obliged to make an appearance at his
party.
Irene’s tea was strong and aromatic. Scott took another long sip and put down his cup. “Okay. I’ll stop by.”
“Good.” Irene smiled again.
Scott turned to her and said, “You didn’t have to come all the way here just to tell me that.”
“My dear, I just wanted an excuse to see you. You haven’t visited your mother in a while.” Irene grinned at this.
Scott muttered something that was not audible.
Despite the heavy rain that fell the night before, the sun soon took over and reigned its unbearing heat over Willowstown once more.
