Chapter 23
23. Lost
Waking up, she had no idea where she was or for that matter, who she was! She could hear beeping and other noises coming from machines strategically placed around her and she began to swivel her head so that she could take in her surroundings. There was a window to her right but the white curtains hanging above closed out the world beyond it. Shifting her eyes, she took in the pale cream-colored walls, the television hanging against one of the walls across from the foot of her bed... bed, she realized she was in a bed but still not sure where. A scent hit her nose and as she breathed it in, she realized that there was only one type of place that was able to produce that specific type of smell, a hospital!
Glancing down to look at herself, she saw a white blanket that only hospitals kept on hand tucked around her from her mid-section all the way down around and under her legs and feet. A shiver travelled over her skin and that’s when she realized there were needles poking and prodding her flesh. Hesitantly she placed her palms on either side of her upon the mattress and gently pushed herself into a sitting position. Releasing the air, she held captive in her lungs that she hadn’t realized she was holding as she had repositioned herself, she reached out a hand to press the call button for someone to come check in on her.
Just as she hit the button, the door to her room slid open and a kind older lady with horned rimmed glasses perched upon her nose, ash blonde hair bouncing around her face and dressed in teal blue scrubs walked in. “Oh my gosh! You’re awake. I will be right back sweetheart; I’ve got to call the doctor and let him know the change in your status. Don’t go anywhere,” the nurse titters to herself as she leaves the girl’s room in jubilation and the girl is just left sitting there with her mouth hanging open as she had so many questions, she was hoping to have answers to.
What felt like hours but was probably only a duration of ten minutes, the girl sat and stared blankly at the wall which held the television. She hadn’t bothered to turn it on because she was so lost in the flashes of memories trying to flood her mind. However, no matter what image she chose to focus on, nothing came into view solidly, leaving her with even more questions; though the most important one she wanted answered was, ‘who am I?’
The girl was seconds away from giving up hope that the nurse would return when the door slid open once more. “See doctor. Wide awake, just amazing, right?” The nurse shifted her focus from the girl to the towering doctor who stood next to her. Close to six and a half feet tall, his salt and pepper hair brushed away from his face, the doctor looked like a giant as he gazed down at the girl still sitting on the bed.
“Indeed, nurse Mary, indeed,” the doctor chuckled as he moved his eyes from the girl to the chart in his hand. “You are one lucky young lady, Miss Arryn. The entire staff were very unsure as to whether you would ever wake from your slumber. How are you feeling?”
“Uh,” the girl tries to speak but her throat feels like someone had run a bristle pad on it. Seeing a cup on a stand next to her, she picked it up and looking inside to see that there was water in it, took a gulp and then tried to speak again. “Um, where am I? How did I get here and is Miss Arryn my name?” The girl allowed her eyes to jump back and forth between the doctor and the nurse and so she was able to see the look of uncertainty that passed between the two.
The doctor cleared his throat, “we don’t have much to go on as the paper files at the previous hospital you were in were destroyed in the explosion. From the computer data we were able to retrieve, the only information in the database was the name Cass Arryn. We assume Cass is a nickname for Cassandra and that Arryn is most likely your last name, but we cannot be a hundred percent sure, mind you.”
Cass nods her head like she understands but she doesn’t; not really. She didn’t even know how she ended up in the hospital in the first place. The doctor’s blue-grey eyes stare into hers, concern written all over his face. “Okay, well then, I will leave you in the capable hands of Ms. Mary here and I will come by a bit later to check on you.” He turns his focus to nurse Mary, giving her a look and then with a nod, he walks out of the room.
Mary walks over to Cass, “I’m going to take your vitals. If all reads well, you will probably be released late this afternoon.” She smiles and Cass smiles hesitantly back at her. After jotting down some information on a piece of paper, Mary patted the side of Cass’s arm and then left her in the silence of the room once more.
A few hours later Mary strolls in with a bright wide smile upon her face. “The doctor has given the go ahead to release you. I just have some forms for you to sign and then you will get to leave.” Her smile falters slightly as concern flashes in her eyes. “I will be right back dear to collect those papers from you. Here’s a pen you can use.” Just as suddenly as the nurse had appeared she disappeared only to return about a minute and a half later. “I know it’s not much but here, take this,” Mary said as she stuffed something into Cass’s hand.
Opening her hand up, Cass saw a fifty-dollar bill. “Um, thank you. This will get me a ride at least. I’ll figure things out along the way.” She stood from the bed and stepped up to the nurse giving her a hug. Stepping back, she looked into Mary’s eyes reiterating her thank you. Twenty minutes later Cass found herself standing out in front of the hospital waiting for a Cab to arrive. While she waited, she saw a corkboard with items posted on it. One pamphlet in particular caught her eye, and she pulled it free from the cork. ’Broadway at the Beach’, a boardwalk that would have tons of people milling about. It’s as good as any place to get lost amongst the crowds, she thought just as the yellow vehicle with big black letters on the side CAB pulled up in front of her.
About fifteen minutes later she found herself wandering aimlessly on the boardwalk unsure where to go or what to do. Coming to stand in front of a club, she saw a help-wanted sign, and deciding ‘why not’, walked inside and struck up a conversation with someone standing by the bar. She couldn’t believe her luck that it ended up being the owner of the club. By the end of their chat, not only had she been hired, but he had also offered her the apartment above the club to rent too. Jason had never met someone like her and couldn’t believe she couldn’t remember who she was or if she had a family or even where she came from. No one ever came looking for her and eventually she came to consider Jason and one of the other bartenders Ginny, her family.
NOTES FROM THE AUTHOR:
For the curious reader in my minds’ eye what the characters look like to me. Also, the pronunciation of the characters names if interested.
Cassiel (Kaa-Siy-EHL): Her height is 5’9-ish. She has long, straight black/raven colored hair that falls just below the middle of her back and bangs. Eyes are the color of the ocean and can change from light to dark blue. Athletic/fit and a soldier/warrior. She’s 18 and very good at wielding a sword for her age.
Azael (aa-Zaa-EH-L): His height is 6’4. Black hair shaved short on sides and back but long on top that falls to just above the eye. Eyes are as black as midnight. Wears golden hued contact lenses. A natural tanned color of skin. Though not mentioned, I picture him sporting tattoos of runes on his arms, back and chest. Very muscular and a warrior. His age I picture as around 20 or 21.
Zadkiel (Zad-Kiel): He is 6’2 with dark blonde hair length and style about the same as Azael but typically slicked back with gel. Light blue eyes. He is the commander of Cassiel’s unit and is 22 years old. Strong, athletic and fit as well.
Baraqiel (Ba-Raq-Iel): 6’1 in height. Dark brown eyes and black hair. Second in command. Nickname is ‘B’. Age is 21. Strong and fit like the others.
Ananiel (Anânêl): The shortest of the group at just 5’7 in height. Long brown hair that falls to her tail bone and green eyes. Twin to Daniel. A friend and fellow soldier to Cassiel.
Daniel (d AE - n ih - y uh l): Twin to Anaiel. Height is 5’10. They are 19. He is in love with Cassiel. Brown ringlets of hair bounce around on his head and constantly likes to fall into his eyes. Same green eyes as his twin sister.
Turiel (t-oo-r-y-EH-l): Forest green eyes. 6’0 but smaller frame than the other males in the group. Reddish brown hair.
-----
Belial (be-lial): 5’8 with long flowing white-blonde hair. A Fallen angel and fools around with Azael. Not in love but after title and power. Thin but fit. Hates Cassiel. Pitch black eyes.
Asmodeus (As-modeus): Pitch black eyes. The commander of this particular unit sent to retrieve/steal an element that can kill immortal beings. Dark buzz cut hair and extremely dark essence.

List of Fallen Angels - Angelicpedia
In the Hebrew Bible, the destroying angel (Hebrew: מַלְאָך הַמַשְׁחִית, malʾāḵ hamašḥīṯ), also known as mashḥit (מַשְׁחִית mašḥīṯ, ‘destroyer’; plural: מַשְׁחִיתִים, mašḥīṯīm, ‘spoilers, ravagers’), is an entity sent out by YHWH on several occasions to kill the enemies of the Hebrews.
These angels (mal’akh) are also variously referred to as memitim (מְמִיתִים, ‘executioners, slayers’)[citation needed], or Angel of the Lord. The latter is found in Job 33:22, as well as in Proverbs 16:14 in the plural, “messengers of death”. Mashchith was also used as an alternate name for one of the seven compartments of Gehenna.[2][3]

On the other hand, some Islamic scholars opposed the belief in fallen angels by stressing the piety of angels supported by verses of Quran, such as 16:49 and 66:6, although none of these verses declare angels as immune from sin.[3] One of the first opponents of the concept of fallen angels was the early and influential Islamic ascetic Hasan of Basra (642–728). To support the doctrine of infallible angels, he pointed at verses which stressed the piety of angels, while simultaneously reinterpreting verses which might imply acknowledgement of fallen angels. For that reason, he read the term mala’ikah (angels) in reference to Harut and Marut, two possible fallen angels mentioned in 2:102, as malikayn (kings) instead of malā’ikah (angels), depicting them as ordinary men and advocated the belief that Iblis was a jinn and had never been an angel before.[4] The precise degree of angelic fallibility is not clear even among scholars who accepted fallen angels; according to a common assertion, impeccability applies only to the messengers among angels or as long as they remain angels.[5]

Element Astatine is the rarest naturally occurring element on earth.
Astatine - Wikipedia
A sample of the pure element has never been assembled, because any macroscopic specimen would be immediately vaporized by the heat of its own radioactivity
Newly formed astatine-211 is the subject of ongoing research in nuclear medicine.[132] It must be used quickly as it decays with a half-life of 7.2 hours; this is long enough to permit multistep labeling strategies. Astatine-211 has potential for targeted alpha-particle therapy, since it decays either via emission of an alpha particle (to bismuth-207),[133] or via electron capture (to an extremely short-lived nuclide, polonium-211, which undergoes further alpha decay), very quickly reaching its stable granddaughter lead-207. Polonium X-rays emitted as a result of the electron capture branch, in the range of 77–92 keV, enable the tracking of astatine in animals and patients.[132] Although astatine-210 has a slightly longer half-life, it is wholly unsuitable because it usually undergoes beta plus decay to the extremely toxic polonium-210.[134]
