Chapter 17
17. Azael
I couldn’t say how long I paced back and forth throughout my house waiting for Cassiel to show up. It had been well over the two-hour mark that she had texted for being able to sneak over. In between the pacing I would pause for a second to glance at my phone in hopes of a message popping up from her but nothing. Fear began to eat at me that the other female angel hadn’t kept her word about not saying anything to Cass and now Cass was off thinking about thousands of ways to kill me. Her ignoring my texts is a prime example that my fear has become truth. I’m so desperate to get in touch with her that I actually call her phone (something I do not do because I don’t like chatting on the phone), but it does no good because the phone is out of range/service. Where in Hell’s creation could she have gone that she is out of service range? Back to pacing some more.
Clang, clatter, bang! The noise comes from the kitchen, and I dash into the room hoping that Cassiel had figured away to get into the house and was trying to surprise me. Skidding to a halt I see Belial’s black fathomless eyes glaring at me. “What in the hell are you doing here?” Just the sight of her causes my blood to boil! She has some nerve showing her face here considering she is the reason I’ll be transferred out of this mission.
Belial smirks, “I’m just getting comfortable in my new abode...Didn’t anyone tell you? I’m going to take over the surveillance aspect of this mission. Oh, don’t worry. You’ll still be here too, but with an eye on you at all times. You will stay on this mission just long enough to persuade Cassiel to hand over some of that Astatine and then you are out!” She giggles but there’s nothing lighthearted or happy about it. My turn to glare and if I could shoot fire from my eyes I would have. The cold-hearted bitch!
Instead of saying anything, to give her the attention she craves, I turn foot and walk down the hallway to my bedroom. “Oh, fuck no!” I bellow as I storm out of the room. “Get your shit out of my room, NOW! You can have the spare room or the couch, but you are not staying in my room! What makes you think I want to be anywhere near you? You are fucking mental if you think I want to spend any time with you while you are here. I don’t want to see you, hell, I don’t even want to hear you. Stay as far away from me as possible!” An eerie calm comes over me and I go back into the bedroom. This is only because a few minutes later I have tossed all her stuff into the hallway after which I slam the door and lock it.
Now not only am I upset because Cassiel isn’t talking to me, but pissed off because with Belial in the house, I won’t have a chance in Hell’s realm to truly talk with Cass. Nothing like the feeling of being stuck between a rock and a hard place.
A knocking at my door pulls me from my thoughts and I snarl out, “what do you want now?” Belial doesn’t answer, just simply knocks again. “Oh, for fuck’s sake, WHAT DO YOU WANT!” I shout as I swing the door open violently.
“Chill Azael, I just came to let you know your angel is standing on the back deck, damn!” Only when she starts to speak do I realize how little clothing she has on.
“Shit!” I shout as I shoulder past her to get to the deck. By the time I get to the door she’s gone. I watch as the tail end of the portal disappears from sight. “Did you do this on purpose,” I demand as I turn away from the door and see Belial standing there. “Argh!” I growl not giving her a chance to reply, really, I don’t care if she did it on purpose or not. The outcome falls in her favor anyway. What Belial wants Belial gets. I shove her out of my way going back into my room locking the door once more.
“Fuck, Fuck, FUCK!” I shout as I walk back and forth along the carpeted floor. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve run one or both hands through my hair as I try to figure out how I’m going to fix this shit show that is my life. A sudden urge to smoke has me debating between walking out the front door or climbing out the bedroom window so that I can have a cigarette. Since I don’t know what she is doing out there and I don’t want to encounter her I opt for the window thanking the stars the whole time I am climbing out for this house being one story.
Risking a glance next door, I see that the angels’ home is still shrouded in darkness. Where could they have gone? I stare so hard at their front porch that I feel like I could manifest them into being there. Suddenly I am consumed with exhaustion so much so that my body feels heavy, lethargic. I put the cigarette out and toss the butt into a small tin bucket that I keep specifically for that purpose. Stepping around the side of the house I make my way back through the window into my room. Stripping my shirt off I crawl onto the bed and pass out.
My eyes grow wide when I wake up the next morning and see an unread text from Cassiel waiting for me. This confirms that she had definitely been out of service range which explains why she hadn’t responded to my messages or least why she hadn’t responded to the first round of messages anyway. I’m all thumbs as I try to pull the message up so I can read it. She has agreed to meet me and let me explain what she had seen at the house last night plus the other stuff I had wanted to talk about in the first place. She said she can meet me in an hour out just past the dunes where we met up previously. I hop in the shower and probably take one of the quickest showers of my life. Choosing a white cotton t-shirt, black jeans, and my black combat boots, I dress and then look in the mirror to make sure I look okay. My fingers dance across the contact lenses case as I decide whether or not to wear them. I want to tell her the truth and to do that I have to be me, not hide behind a façade.
Black fathomless pits that are my eyes stare back at me from the mirror, running a hand through my hair, I turn from the mirror and exit my bedroom. I had just placed my hand on the sliding glass door when I hear what sounds like nails scratching across a chalkboard behind me. Alright it’s Belial but same difference, right? “And where might you be going, hmm?” Making a face I breathe out through my nose annoyed as I turn around to face her. I cross my arms over my chest and give her a death glare.
“I’m going out and that is all you need to know,” I say sternly, my glare unwavering. She pasha’s me and then giggles.
“We’ll see about that!” Belial says with a false sweetness in her voice, and I can’t help but wonder what the conniving bitch is planning to do now. Muttering a ‘whatever’, I step out onto the deck and light up a cigarette. Looking at my phone to see the time, I have roughly twenty minutes until I meet up with Cass and I decide I might as well start trudging through the sand now. Maybe her seeing I’m early will show her how serious I’m being.
