Pucking Sweet: An MMF Workplace Hockey Romance (Jacksonville Rays Book 3)

Pucking Sweet: Chapter 48

My microwave beeps, and I take out my steamer bag of green beans. When I’m home and cooking for myself, I eat, like, two of these bags a day. They serve one family of three, or one hockey player. Tonight, I’m eating them with two grilled chicken breasts and a loaded double-baked potato. I dump the green beans into a mixing bowl I have prepped with some salt and pepper and a chunk of butter. I’m swirling them with a fork when someone knocks on my door.

It can’t be Poppy. We had dinner plans she had to cancel when she was called in to deal with a PR crisis. A drunk rookie drove his car into a goddamn sand dune. I guess he thought he could drive over the dune to get to the beach. The trouble is that the dunes are all protected here in Florida. You face a major fine for damaging one. This is serious. We’re talking police presence, threats of jail time, and Poppy contacting lawyers.

Fucking rookies. Not only am I losing the chance to see my girl before I leave for another two days, but now I have to eat by myself.

Whoever it is knocks again with a heavy fist.

“I’m coming,” I shout.

Why do I already know who this is just based on the annoying sound of his knock?

“What?” I say at Lukas, swinging the door open.

It’s been a week since the bachelorette party, and things are going really well. Sharing a woman with this asshole has proved to be a lot easier than I thought it would be. Granted, we’re in the middle of a messy set of home and away games that has us traveling or on the ice every other day, so there hasn’t been a lot of time to do any deep relationship-building.

But the sex is going great. They were both over here last night. We took turns fucking her on my couch before we both came on her chest. Then we watched TV and ate popcorn with her snuggled between us. I got to hold her and pet her hair while she fell asleep on me, her legs stretched out across Nov. It was pretty fucking perfect.

My eyes widen as I take in the two large suitcases at his feet. “Nov, what—”

“This is all your fault,” he snaps, shoving past me to wheel the first bag inside.

I step back. “What the hell happened?”

“You told Poppy I needed an interior decorator,” he replies, dragging in his other bag. “Now Janice is redoing all my floors because apparently, we want to achieve ‘floor plan flow.’ Whatever the fuck that means.”

I grin. “It just means your floor plan was all chopped up with different floorings.”

He narrows his eyes at me. “What?”

“Like, you had tile in the kitchen, wood in the living room, and carpet down the hall. It was going to be my first recommendation too.”

“Well, that’s just fucking perfect.” He steps past me into my little apartment kitchen. Walking right over to my cabinets, he takes out a second plate. “I have to be out of my house while she demos the kitchen and all the floors, so I’m staying here.”

“You’re redoing the kitchen?”

“Yeah. She didn’t like the outdated layout.”

Honestly, I didn’t either. Something more modern and open would fit the space great. He should upgrade to a double oven and an industrial fridge too. I wonder if he’s considering bookshelf built-ins for that sunny second-floor bedroom…

As I watch, he uses my own damn fork to stab one of my garlic lemon pepper chicken breasts, plopping it onto his plate. Then the asshole dares to take half of my perfectly dressed potato. A lesser man would knife him for it. “You know, I had actually planned to eat all that myself,” I say, crossing my arms.

“Yeah, and I planned to live in my own damn house. We’ve all got problems.” He picks up the little mixing bowl of green beans and frowns. “This isn’t nearly enough for us to share.

With a sigh, I toss my kitchen towel onto the counter. “There’s another bag in the fridge.”

“Well, if you think I’m making them, you’re dead wrong.” Stealing the whole bowl of green beans for himself, he takes all his pilfered food and wanders past me into the living room. “Hey, you wanna keep watching Sons of Anarchy?”

Did I just say this was going well?
