Chapter 33
It has been two days since Raymond broke Evelyn's fragile heart. She has resumed work, pretending as if she is okay. But, deep down in her mind, it still hurts. It hurts her deeply, anytime the image of her ex-boyfriend kissing her cousin flashes in her mind.
She knows that she will get over him soon. But, how is she going to forget about him when his face is glued to her memory? She can't seem to forget about him, especially when he is spamming her with messages.
Evelyn has blocked his numbers and deleted everything about him on her phone but Raymond is persistent and stubborn, he still spams her with calls and texts using strange numbers.
She doesn't even bother to read his texts. She doesn't listen to his pleas and excuses. What excuse can he give her, anyway? She caught them together in her house. It even seems like they've been deceiving her, since all these days. Or, is he going to tell her that he was drunk that day?
All his messages are left unread on her social media handles.
Evelyn doesn't know about her cousin's whereabouts. Since the incident happened, she hasn't set her eyes on Skylar.
Eve should not call Skylar her cousin anymore. Skylar is even like a sister to her but she betrayed her.
A real sister will never take her sister's man. But, Skylar broke that rule. She is not a real sister, she is a damn betrayal.
Her phone beeps, snapping her out of her thoughts. She doesn't want to bring out the phone, with the thought that it may be Raymond, acting like a foolish human being again.
On second thought, she decides to check the caller. She brings the phone out of her handbag and discovers that the caller is her mother.
She swallows a gulp down my throat. She hopes her mom is not calling to spoil her mood. She is frustrated already, she will lose it if her mom decides to say trash to her.
Nevertheless, she picks up the call.
"Good morning," Evelyn greets her mom.
"Where is your cousin?" Her mom's high-pitched voice resounds in her head.
Evelyn's eyelids drop in disappointment. Her mom doesn't even respond to her greetings or ask about her well-being. Instead, she only asks about Skylar.
"Why is my family so messed up? Why am I so unlucky with my parents and family?" Evelyn mutters in her mind.
Evelyn's lips curl. She won't let her mother mess up her already ruined mental health. She is going to respond to her mom's question, the way she asked.
"Why are you so quiet? Are you there, Evelyn? Where is your cousin?" Her mom bombards her with questions that are not necessary.
"Don't you have her number? Am I in this world to look after Skylar or what?" Eve blurts out.
"Where are your manners, young lady? Is that the normal way of speaking to elders, especially someone who is your mother?" Her mom snaps at her.
"I am sorry, dear mother. But, you didn't teach me the normal way of speaking to elders. Oh, I even forgot that you are a busy woman who doesn't have time for her child," She retorts, picking her words one after the other. "Evelyn, what has gone into your head? I don't think you're in your right state of mind,"
"Yes, I am not in my right state of mind. I am not okay. I am mentally and physically sick," "Evelyn, you are - "
Evelyn hangs up the call before her mom can complete her sentence. Her mom is giving her a headache already.
She takes a long breath and blinks her eyelashes rapidly. She is trying to control herself from shedding tears. She wants to turn her hair messy and cries her eyes out. But, she will not do that. She will just plaster a smile on her face and pretend to be okay.
Evelyn shuts down her laptop and drops her head on the desk. She is indeed mentally, physically, and emotionally ill. She needs to rest. She needs to take a break. A break from everything.
She is about to drift to sleep when the office phone rings interrupting her.
"Evelyn Jones here," She mumbles.
"What are you doing? Come to my office now," Jayden's husky voice resounds in her ear.
She lets out a hiss when he hangs up the call. She is frustrated already but it is not because of her boss. He has been nice to her. He doesn't even bother her or assigns a lot of tasks to her. She is pleased about his change of attitude, at least he is not bothering her.
She stands up from her seat and walks to Jayden's office.
Evelyn notices that Jayden has a frown on his face. He is fuming with anger. It seems like someone had upset him.
"What do you need, sir?" She asks him, cutting his attention from the laptop on his desk.
He gazes at her, lifting his eyebrows. He is silent for a while, then clears his throat."What have you done, Evelyn?"
Her brows furrow."What do you mean, sir?" She questions him.
"You sent the wrong email to two clients. One of them has canceled our contract."He pauses.
He sighs, then continues."You and I know that those clients are really important to the company. Now, you've messed it up completely,"
Her mouth falls open."W.. What? When did I send the e.. email?" She trembles.
"Come over to this side and check your silly mistake," He orders.
She walks over to his desk. He adjusts his laptop to where she is standing so that she can do what she has done.
She covers her mouth with her palm. She really made a mistake. She forwards an email that is meant for the termination of contract to the clients.

"I am sorry, Mr. Jayden. I'm deeply sorry. I'm going to call them and apologize now. They - "
He interrupts her, lifting his shoulder in a half-shrug. "It is late already. You forwarded to emails yesterday and I just discovered the mistake now,"
His face holds a frown. It is pretty obvious that he is upset with her for the silly mistake. But, he is trying to suppress his anger. He doesn't want to reprimand her like other workers. He is afraid that he is going to hurt her feelings if he does that. He hates that he is still trying to please her, despite the damage she has caused.
"I am really sorry, Mr. Jayden. I am not in my right state of mind," She mutters under her breath.
"But, you should do," His voice comes out a snap."You are in your workplace. You should devote your time and energy to your work and leave every other thing aside,"
Evelyn frowns."How do you expect me to put everything aside when it is stuck in my mind?"
"You are in your workplace, Evelyn. You are getting paid for your services. You shouldn't let anything get into your work,"
Her lips tremble."But, I'm heartbroken." She mutters.
Jayden throws her a deadly glare. He recalls the night she told him how much she trusted her boyfriend. He was jealous that night, not knowing that the stupid boyfriend is going to break her heart soon. "Someone broke my heart," She adds.
He hisses loudly."Should I just call you stupid? I am not the one who told you to put all your trust in a man," He blurts out.
His hands tighten into fists after the mean words come out of his mouth.
Her honey-brown eyes pierce into his eyes with hurt filled in them. It dawns on him that he has crossed the line.
Evelyn can't believe that he really blurts out those words to her. But, it is the damn reality. She doesn't know when tears form a pool in her eyes. Jayden is a psychopath but she doesn't expect him to be so mean to her. She swallows hard, staring into his eyes. "I want to resign," She says, without even thinking about it...
