Chapter 21:
Two and half years ago before Amara’s accident Damon’s room
In Damon’s head: It’s been eight months without you, Elora. I wonder how I’m still alive. Do you know how difficult it is for me to even breathe without you? Why did you leave me? You took my heart…my soul with you, darling. The hole you left in my heart would never be able to heal. I can’t find a reason to live anymore. It would be best if you had taken me with you. How will I live without you?
Damon: “Go away! I don’t wanna see anyone. Maria, what did I tell you? Don’t let anyone in. Leave me the fuck alone!”
Hermes: “Damon Drakos Ariti. Why are you doing this?”
Damon: “Who the fuck are you and who let you in here?”
Hermes: “Alcohol has wrecked your head. It’s me, Hermes.”
Damon: “Hermes…oh yes, I remember you. Now get the fuck out of my house. I’m in no mood to hear your old bullshit.”
Hermes: “Okay, I’ll leave but tell me. What are you planning on doing next? You’ve been drinking too much. Are you trying to kill yourself? I’m sorry for your loss but you can’t die even if you try. You can’t die without finding her and fulfilling your task.”
Damon: “What are you even talking about? What task?”
Hermes: “The task of protecting her.”
Damon: “No, I don’t need to protect anyone because I can’t. I couldn’t protect my wife. How am I going to protect a girl with such a destiny? Our fate is to die for the sake of this prophecy. Who knows, maybe she’s already dead.”
Hermes: “She’s not dead.”
Damon: “Oh yeah? Then why don’t you go and find her yourself. You’re a so-called ‘God’ didn’t tell you where she is.”
Hermes: “I can’t find her, but you can. You both share a bond, you can find her and she’ll be eighteen soon, there’s not much time left.”
Damon: “Maybe I can but I won’t. You know why? Because if I did, she’ll die. So let’s let her live wherever she is and not drag her into the bullshit of this cursed prophecy.”
Hermes: “No curse is implied by this prophecy nor is it a prophecy of doom.”
Damon: “Are you blind? This was always the prophecy of doom. That poor girl didn’t get a chance to spend any time with her parents. She wouldn’t know her parents sacrificed their lives to save her. All her ancestors had to live without parents because their parents sacrificed their lives right after their birth. My parents met the same fate, they sacrificed their lives to protect me so I could escape. This prophecy holds a great significance for you but in reality, it brought nothing but doom to everyone who was connected to this prophecy. I wonder why your God is so cruel.”
Hermes: “God isn’t cruel, God is fair. They had to pay the price for the bloodshed, for butchering each other but God showed mercy in the form of this prophecy.”
Damon: “Mercy? What mercy are you talking about? The entire race vanished from this world, no one remembers that creatures like those existed. Your God’s wrath vanished them all, remember how they no longer can give birth after that war? That’s how they got extinct. Even my race no longer exists. I’m the last one of them. How merciful your God is.”
Hermes: “They paid for their sins.”
Damon: “They're still paying. Let me say this for the last time. I’m not gonna find her, she might be out there living the best life right now. There’s no way I’m gonna drag her into this bullshit and ruin her chance to live a normal life. Now get out! Leave me and my alcohol alone. (the next day in the living room)”
Nikolaos: “Where is he?”
Maria: “In his room, he won’t be happy to see you.”
Nikolaos: “I know but I can’t let him ruin his life like this, this needs to stop. Damon, we need to talk.”
Damon: “What are you doing here? Don’t you have any meetings to attend?”
Nikolaos: “Yes. We have a meeting in South America. The boss of the Colombian mafia wants to talk to you. So get ready, we’ll leave in two days. You signed a deal with him seven months ago and he still hasn’t received any consignment yet. He’s furious. He’ll kill us if we don’t complete the order on time.”
Damon: “He’s most welcome to kill me. I don’t give a fuck about this life anyway.”
Nikolaos: “Why are you doing this to yourself? I can’t bear to see you like this. Would Elora be happy to see you like this if she were here? She would’ve never wanted you to give up on this life like this? Try to live for her. I’ll come pick you up, I need you to be ready by then. (the next day that evening in the living room)”
Damon: “The jet is ready. What?”
Nikolaos: “It’s good to have you back. (on the jet)”
In Damon’s head: I had no intention to come to this meeting but I don’t know, last night I felt like someone needed my help and I should be there or maybe it was the alcohol talking. Let’s get this over with. (after the meeting the car). What the hell happened? Shit! (Damon gets out the car - fire explosion cars everywhere)
Damon: “Hey, hey, hey, stay with me. Stay with me, please.”
In Damon’s head: That’s when I saw her eyes. I recognize those eyes anywhere. It’s her. Tears started blurring my vision, I could feel her pain. Gathering all her strength she uttered a few words.
Amara: “Don’t bother. I know it’s too late.”
Damon: “No, no, no, no. You’re gonna live, you have to live. (at the hospital several hours later). How is she, doctor? Tell me she lived. Please.”
Anthony: “She’s brain dead. We don’t know if she’ll wake up.”
In Damon’s head: She’ll wake up. She has to. (one month later)
Damon: “What did you find? Did you find her adoptive parents?”
Alex: “Yes, I’ve been keeping an eye on them for a few weeks now. I don’t know how to politely say that they don’t give a fuck about their daughter. The cops couldn’t find any dead body at the accident spot but her parents considered her dead without wasting any time. I don’t believe they ever cared for her.”
In Damon’s head: And I was a fool to think that she was living her best life out there.
Damon: “Did she have any friends or boyfriend or girlfriend?”
Alex: “I did find one of her friends, who could be her boyfriend. He tried to find her, he seemed like he cared for her. After a few weeks he also gave up, then I saw him with a girl, maybe his new girlfriend. I’m not sure.”
Damon: “Didn’t she have any more friends?”
Alex: “No.”
Damon: “Were you able to collect dna samples of her parents?”
Alex: “Yes.”
Damon: “You did good.”
Alex: “My pleasure. (four months later Amara’s hospital room)”
Damon: “What the fuck are you doing here? How dare you touch her?! (Damon fighting the nurse - the doctor runs in)”
Anthony: “Damon, what the hell?! Leave him!! What’s wrong with you? You’re in a hospital for fucks sake. He’ll die.”
Damon: “I fucking saw him touching her inappropriately. Why the hell was no one here with her when I told you to keep one of your female staff here with her at all times?”
Anthony: “She’s brain dead, accept that she’s dead. We doctors were also discussing removing her life support system a few hours ago. You have to let her go, Damon.”
Damon: “Touch her life support system and I’ll burn this whole damn hospital to the ground. I don’t throw money on you for nothing. Do your fucking job and don’t you dare think about removing her life support system and no one will enter her room from now on. Do you fucking hear me?”
Anthony: “Okay calm down. No one will come here from now on.”
Damon: “And take this piece of shit out of my sight before I kill him. Don’t worry, little one. I’m here to protect you. I’ll always be here to protect you. Sorry for coming late in your life. I should’ve found you sooner. I’m sorry. (a few weeks later Amara wakes up)”
Amara: “Who are you? Where am I? Ahhh!”
Damon: “What’s happening?”
Amara: “My head.”
Damon: “Doctor! (later in the hallway). What’s wrong? She’s okay, tell me.”
Anthony: “It’s a miracle she woke up but she’s in excruciating pain and the painkillers aren’t working. Nothing is working.”
Damon: “What do you mean? She needs to be anesthetized.”
Anthony: “We tried heavy doses but it’s as if no medicine is working on her body.”
In Damon’s head: What the hell is happening? Is it because the accident made her break the shell which was suppressing her powers? Who should I call? Hermes? No, he’ll drag her into more harmful things. A witch will know what type of powerful being she’s dealing with and Amara’s safety will be compromised.
Damon: “Hey, little one. Do you remember me?”
Amara: “No.”
Damon: “I’m Damon Drakos Ariti. I’m the one who brought you to the hospital. What’s the last thing you remember?”
Amara: “Pain. I remember your face, I saw you before everything went black. What hospital did you bring me in? The doctors said I was in a coma for six months and they aren’t giving me anything to make the pain go away. They injected me with God knows what into my body but it’s not working. I feel like my head will explode. Can you tell me why everything is so loud here? Why is everyone shouting like that?”
In Damon’s head: What is she talking about? It’s dead silent here.
Amara: “I think there’s something wrong with my eyes too. I didn’t see you speak but I heard what you said. You said there’s a dead silence here. Are you drunk?”
In Damon’s head: Did she?
Amara: “Did I what? Why don’t you help me call the doctor? Do something before I die from this headache. What are you doing?”
Damon: “Breathe, little one. I promise I have no bad intentions. I’m here to help you. Please don’t refuse my help. There are some things you need to accept but I won’t tell you until you’re ready.”
In Amara’s head: Who is this man? I’ve never trusted a stranger, actually I never trusted anyone but he seems genuinely concerned about me. But why? Not even my parents showed me any care. Why does a stranger seem like he genuinely cares about me and why do I feel like I can trust him?
Amara: “I’m feeling better. Those people are gone, I can no longer hear them talking.”
Damon: “And your headache?”
Amara: “Bearable. Tell me what you have to tell me.”
Damon: “What the doctors told you is true. You were in a coma and you woke up after six months. Six months ago you had a bad accident. Here’s the date. It’s okay, don’t panic. You’re awake now and you’ll start feeling good in no time and the noise you’re talking about, I think you’re hearing people’s thoughts.”
Amara: “Was that supposed to be funny? I’m hearing people’s thoughts? What are you even talking about? How is that even possible?”
In Damon’s head: Everything is possible in this world, little one.
Amara: “I didn’t see your lips moving but I hurt what you said.”
Damon: “You did. I didn’t say I just thought and you heard it.”
Amara: “This is too much, the pain is coming back.”
Damon: “Calm down. Remember how a few moments ago you made it go away. You can make it go away again. Just breathe and don’t panic.”
Amara: “Did they shave my head?”
Damon: “They had to, you were badly injured.”
Amara: “Great. Tell me how ugly I look?”
Damon: “Ugly? You’re beautiful, little one.”
Amara: “I wanna say that you’re lying but I know you’re not.”
Damon: “I’m not lying, you’re beautiful. Hair, no hair, it doesn’t matter.”
Amara: “Why are you doing all of this? You don’t even know me and you said I’ve been here for six months now. Who paid the bills because I’m sure my parents can’t afford this hospital. Now that made me think, where are my parents? Are they out there?”
Damon: “Actually, they aren’t.”
Amara: “Did they go home? When will they come back? And did anyone named Nathan come visit me? What?”
Damon: “I didn’t inform your parents you’re here because they didn’t care about finding you, they just accepted that you died in that car accident. I know I had no right to do that but their actions made me do it. I felt it didn’t make any difference to them if you’re alive or dead and the doctors also said there was no hope that you'll wake up so I thought it would be better if I waited until you woke up and it made me do the second thing I shouldn’t have done without your permission but curiosity got the best of me.”
Amara: “I’m unbelievable actually how did I think that they would care for me now when they never did? What’s the second thing you did?”
Damon: “I took your blood sample to run a test and what I found would be kind of heartbreaking for you.”
Amara: “If you’re gonna tell me that I was pregnant and I lost my baby then let me know. It’s not possible I was never pregnant.”
Damon: “No, it’s not that.”
Amara: “Then what can be the heartbreaking news?”
Damon: “I did a DNA test and I found out they’re not your biological parents.”
Amara: “Enough with your jokes. Tell me you’re lying! It can’t be. I don’t believe this. I can’t believe this. If I believe what you’re saying then that would mean my whole life is a lie. I was living with imposterous my whole life. It can’t be it.”
Damon: “Sorry, little one. (a few days later). I’m back, little one. How are you feeling?”
Amara: “This headache is killing me. I recently found out my whole life is a lie, nomedicine is working for my body. How would I possibly feel, brother?”
Damon: “What did you just call me?”
Amara: “Brother. Can I call you brother?”
Damon: “It would make me happy.”
Amara: “Can I ask you something?”
Damon: “Sure.”
Amara: “Why is there no mirror in my room?”
Damon: “You wanna see your face?”
Amara: “I haven’t seen my face since I woke up. Is there something wrong with it?”
Damon: “No, there’s nothing wrong”
Amara: “What?! Am I wearing lenes? Why are my eyes blue?”
Damon: “You’re not wearing lenses. Your eyes have changed colors. The doctors say it’s because of the heavy medication and injuries. Are you gonna say something?”
Amara: “I’m tired of saying what the hell and what the fuck these past few days. I’m so done. At this point, if I start growing horns on my head, I won’t react.”
Damon: “I needed to talk to you. I have a proposal for you. The day you woke up we’ll count that day as day one and today day fifteen and since you’re feeling better now you can either go back to your old life or you can come with me to New York and start a fresh one. It’s your decision to make and either way, I’m always here for you. Think about it and tell me tomorrow.”
Amara: “Okay. (the next day)”
Damon: “Have you decided?”
Amara: “I don’t know what I should do. There’s a person I wanna meet.”
Damon: “If you decide to come with me then my jet will be on the airport until 8:00 p.m.”
Amara: “Okay. (a few hours later at the airport)”
In Amara’s head: I guess I know what I’m gonna do now.
